  • Skin Care Tips for Oily Skin

But, with science and esp cosmetology having advanced so much, there has to be something that can help in containing this excessive sebum generation that oils up a skin! Well, this blog is about that only.

So, let us have a look at the very basic changes that can be done to ensure that the oil production remains in check

    Wash Your Face
The very basic, the only difference of importance being that you need to thoroughly wash and clean up your face after you are back home too. Considering the skin type, an oily skinned person cannot afford to not clean up their face because a lot of environmental dust, dirt and germs are already sticking to the face and if left there, they have all the ability to wreak havoc on the skin in forms of acne and skin infections

    Cleanse-Tone-Moisturise
A must for all skin types. A Salicylic Acid based cleanser is ideal for an oily skin type. Post this, let your skin rest for a while and apply a toner. A mild toner should be enough to serve the purpose, however, if it irritates your skin, the suggestion would be to consult a doctor so that they may suggest a suitable toner type for your skin.
Toning in place, next comes moisturising. Even though your skin is oily, moisturising is still a necessity. There are a lot of light, oil free moisturisers one can choose from for this purpose.
Also, gently dab the moisturiser into the skin. The rotational application will not be of much consequence to those with oily skin type

    Diet Check
This can involve major dietary changes for someone but to ensure a better skin health, these changes would be required without any exception:

Replace the usual dairy products with almond milk and vegan cheese. One can go for double toned milk as well if almond milk as a substitute does not go well
Replace the usual cooking oils with olive or rice bran oil which are healthy and low in trans and saturated fat. The food can alternatively be grilled, broiled, baked or poached to make it healthier and minus any trans or saturated fats
Replace the usual meat with lean poultry such as chicken or turkey and avoid oily fish such as salmon and mackerel.
Replace sugary food with natural sugar alternatives such as berries, bananas, lemon or lime water. Dark Chocolates can also be included in the diet plan
    WorkOut
So that the sweat keeps flowing and the pores do not get clogged. Also, it will give your skin ample opportunity to breathe which the otherwise high on oil surface might not provide.

    So, that was it.
Hope it will help you people.

One more problem that comes along with oily skin is large open pores which though medically inconsequential, have serious aesthetic implications.

  • The Common Eating Disorders

Eating disorders, just like any other mental condition have severe stimuli behind them. Sometimes, they might be genetic, sometimes it is a person’s personality trait, sometimes it is the lifestyle and in many cases it is the socio-cultural scenario which force people to take up such unhealthy eating habits which gradually develop into eating disorders.

Some of the commonest eating disorders are listed below:

    Anorexia Nervosa
The commonest of the eating disorders. People suffering from this tend to see themselves as overweight even when they are dangerously underweight. This results in continuous weight monitoring and hence drastic decrease in the food intake. The major symptoms include:

Being considerably underweight as compared to people having the same age, demographics and physical characteristics
Constant endeavour to lose weight and inches from the body
A strong relation between the self esteem and the weight of the person concerned
A distorted body image- thinking oneself as too overweight while being underweight actually
Some might also experience difficulty in eating publically in front of people
    Bulimia Nervosa
People with Bulimia tend to overeat to the extent of being painfully full and uneasy. Such people, do not seem to express any control over the portion size while eating, they just eat till the point of collapse. This act gets followed by the act of purging whereby the said person forces out vomiting or uses laxatives or exercises heavily in order to purge. The major symptoms of Bulimia include:

    Recurring binge eating sprees
Continual attempts at forced purging after the meals
A low self esteem because of negative view about one’s body shape and weight
The constant fear of gaining weight
Side effects such as sore throat, swollen salivary glands, tooth decay, acid reflux, gut irritation, IBS, hormonal imbalances, electrolyte imbalance resulting in palpitation and in extreme cases heart attack too.
    Pica
Recently added to the eating disorders’ list, pica is related to binge eating of non food substances such as ice, dirt, soap, paper, hair, cloth, detergents etc. It can affect both the children and adults but is more commonly found in pregnant women, adolescents and people with mental disabilities. The risk that this disorder holds is in form of poisoning, infections and gut injuries.

    Rumination Disorder
Rumination disorder involves the compulsive habit of re-chewing the already chewed food. While fairly common in infants since they are in the process of adjusting to eat solid food, if found in adults, it is treated as a mental disorder. The important point to be noted is that such a habit in infants needs to be checked so that it does not become a usual personality trait upon growing. While as an infant, this habit might be involuntary, as an adult it grows into our subconscious and becomes fairly involuntary

Needless to say, such an act of chewing becomes a social embarrassment and might result in people losing their appetite and becoming extremely underweight.

  • Are Fat Loss procedures the answer?

Add to that the kind of competition in market and the prices of such technology have gone down significantly as well.
So, with such easy availability in market, as much as it means that one should try these procedures, it also means that one should be wary of what needs to be done to ensure that these procedures give the most efficient results.

This blog piece is about few such things that should be kept in mind once the fat removal procedures have been undertaken:

Massage the treated site daily for about the next 10 days. Do it gently
Your body would contain a lot of dead cells after the procedure, drink a lot of water to enable a fast and effective excretion
Take the medications as prescribed by the doctor without fail
Make sure that the procedure is well timed and does not fall around your menstrual cycle. This is because the hormonal bloating interferes with the treatment’s effectiveness and also leaves you more susceptible to pain
Take up light physical exercises like running, biking or brisk walking to ensure mobilisation of the fat cells in order to facilitate elimination
Apply body wraps and skin tightening creams as suggested. This would help your skin prevent stretch marks or skin sags
Take the following supplements for effective mobilization of the fat cells:
    Vitamin B Supplements and diuretics
Liver supplements such as milk thistle and artichoke to strengthen the liver functioning and hence fat cell metabolism
Take the necessary balanced diet and focus more on antioxidants to ensure that your body feels fresh even when it is undergoing an excessive fat loss which in some cases might induce nausea or loss of stamina

  • The Guide to Freckle Removal

The difference between freckles and other forms of sun damage such as sun tan and pigmentation is that freckles do not result because of the increase in the production of melanocytes. Freckles are caused due to the existing skin cells getting stimulated to produce more melanin.
Hence, instead of appearing over broader areas, freckles appear as spots.
Freckles mostly affect people with lighter skin tone because for the people with darker skin tones, melanin deposition is a natural skin defence which ends up resulting in pigmentation or dark spots.

But how to deal with freckles- will only treatments work or some home care would be needed too?
Well, this is what this blog about:

Let us talk about the DIYs first

    Sour Cream Application
Gently apply sour cream over the affected skin and leave for 20 minutes. Wipe off with a soft tissue and pat dry. Apply a Moisturising lotion
This has to be done every night before you go to sleep.

The Frequency: has to be daily for the first 30 days followed by twice a week for the remaining time till freckles start to fade.

Principle: The lactic acid in the sour cream helps in clearing out the skin by reducing melanin deposition

    Buttermilk and Potato
Grate a potato (after peeling it) and soak the shreds in buttermilk for about 15 minutes. Now, gently rub this on your face. You can also, cut thin potato slices, soak them in buttermilk and then keep on your face as well.

Continue with this rubbing/keeping for about 15 minutes after which you can wash off your face with cold water.
The Frequency: Repeat this procedure 3-4 times a week for best results
Principle: The Glutathione in the potato combines with the lactic acid in the buttermilk to provide better results for removal of any form of pigmentation.

    Horseradish and Apple Cider Vinegar
Grate half cup of horseradish and pour about 1 cup of raw apple cider vinegar on it and seal in an airtight container. Let the solution sit for about 10-14 days.
Gradually shake the container about once or twice daily to ensure that the solid component does not settle at the bottom. After the stipulated period is over, strain the vinegar and store it separately. The horseradish can be thrown away
The horseradish infused vinegar is ready to be applied to the skin. Gently dab with a cotton ball for application twice a day- once before the bath and second before sleeping.
You can let the vinegar rest on your skin as well.

Frequency: Apply daily for about a month for best results.

Principle: Horseradish is a rich source of ascorbic acid, Vitamin C and has bleaching properties- these characteristics not just help in preventing deposition but also facilitate peeling off of the dead skin and lightening pigmentation spots

    The Medical Treatments

DIYs are usually slow to respond to also they work best when used for maintenance. For better and faster results, one should go for medical treatments only. Some of the best are listed below:

    Microdermabrasion
It involves creating abrasions on the skin surface to enable faster skin recuperation. These wounds not just result in faster healing of the damaged sites but also the area around it thus improving upon the overall skin condition in general. More on the same can be read here.

    Chemical Peels
Varying from mild/superficial to strong peels depending upon the severity of skin damage, chemical peels are the very basic solution for almost all skin concerns.
For pigmentation, freckles and other skin damage types usually medium and strong peels are used. Mild peels are mostly used for either skin maintenance or for sensitive skin types.
To know more about chemical peels, you may visit this page.

    Laser Treatment
Lasers when targeted at the right place and at right intensity are instrumental in breaking down the pigments thus lightening/removing the freckles/pigmentation spots.
Usually safe if done using US-FDA approved treatments, they have been known to prove some of the best results for pigmentation concerns. For more, you may visit this link

  • Knowing Anorexia

Also, anorexia is not always about diet control or eating less. In certain cases it also follows a cyclic pattern of binge eating and purging.

An anorexic patient is likely to see themself as large in size even though when they would be already thin.

    Types of Anorexia

They are two types of anorexia

    • Binge-Purge Type Anorexia- This is the cyclic anorexia whereby a person first binge eats and then goes into a complete purgatory mode. The binge eating alleviated the fear of weight gain which triggers the purge mode. The purging is done either by natural vomiting, exercising excessively or inducing excretion through laxatives
    • Restrictive Anorexia- The more commonly found anorexia type, restrictive anorexia results in a person starving themselves by restricting their calorie intake. Due to their perceived image of themselves, the patients end up eating far less calories than they actually require.

    Causes of Anorexia
The commonly accepted belief is that anorexia is a genetic disorder triggered by the surrounding situations. However, one’s personality traits have a lot to do in inducing anorexic behaviour than anything else. Some of the common environmental factors affecting one’s decisions however can be:

    • Size zero culture- the culture where the thinner one is, the better they are considered
    • Unrealistic body image expectations enforced by the glamour industry
    • Professions such as modelling which require one to stay thin
    • Psychological traumas which resurface later

    Treating Anorexia
There is no medication for Anorexia however the following in conjunction have been known to help the patients cope:

    • Family Therapy: Spending quality time with the family in an environment of positivity helps one feel confident in their own skin. The patient’s family in such cases is advised by a trained therapist on how to maintain their conduct so as to ensure a positive rehabilitatory effect on the person
    • Intervention of a trained weight therapist: There are trained therapists who help heal a person on psychological as well as physical level by not just tendering to one’s thought process but also by monitoring their food intake and physical activity to ensure a wholesome body growth
    • Diet Monitoring: Prepared by a dietician, the diet chart helps one take the necessary amount of calories while gradually increasing the intake to ensure a healthy weight gain.
    • Sometimes antidepressants, taken under supervision and as per the prescription of a certified medical practitioner.

  • Sun damage levels- In what forms does sun damage show

When we talk of sun damage, we usually think about sun-tan and darkening of the skin tone. A step further and we think of freckles, pigmentation and dark spots and that is usually the end for us.
But, contrary to the usual belief, sun damage can be as severe as causing permanent damage to the skin and in some cases triggering cancer too.

Here are some of the commonest severe damages that Sun exposure can cause

    Solar lentigines

These are flat spots caused due to increased pigmentation at localised spots. Usually brown, black or gray in colour, they vary in size depending upon the damage done with the size and damage being in proportion. Lentigines appear on the areas which face maximum sun exposure and are usually found on the hands and upper back. Lentigines develop over a period of continuous exposure and are more common in adults as compared to teenagers.

    Solar elastosis

This is a permanent condition caused by breaking down of the collagen and elastin fibres in the skin’s connective tissues. This breakdown is a consequence of excessive exposure to the UV rays. The result is the loss of skin strength and flexibility which appears as creases, wrinkles and skin sags

    Lentigo maligna

It is a type of growth which develops on the face, hands or legs i.e. the area prone to maximum sun exposure. It is usually a dark flat spot which grows in perimeter over time. This condition is most prone to developing into a melanoma over time.

Hence, if you experience any mole/dark spot which you feel is growing in size over time, it is important that you visit a doctor and have it checked.

    Labial lentigo

This form of damage affects the lips only. Labial Lentigo appears as a dark brown lesion on the lips- in most cases it is the lower lip that gets affected.

    Poikiloderma

Poikiloderma is the condition whereby reddish brown pigments appear across the skin. This condition affects mostly the neck and chest.

    Melasma

Melasma is a dark brown layer that forms on the skin. It is caused not just because of the sun rays but because of a combination of sun damage and hormonal imbalance. It most commonly affects the pregnant ladies due to surge in estrogen levels but has also been found to affect several women post their menopause.

    Actinic keratoses

This appears as rough, scaly patches on the skin. Their colour can be white, light brown, dark brown, gray or pink depending upon the skin colour of the person concerned. These patches are most commonly affect the face, ears, lower arms and lower legs- basically the areas which are more prone to accidental and constant sun exposure.

This was all that we had on Sun damage types. Should you wish to know more about the treatments, we are always a call or message away

  • Stretch Marks-The Cause and Prevention

Almost all of us have stretch marks, it would be actually difficult to find someone who doesn’t have stretch marks but is weight or rather fat deposit fluctuation the only reason for getting stretch marks?
Also, is it possible to get rid of stretch marks totally?
Does butter bath work for stretch marks prevention during pregnancy?
Can a good diet and skin maintenance help in stretch marks prevention?
How effective is Laser treatment for stretch marks removal?
Can one get rid of stretch marks forever?

All these and many more, this blog aims at answering most of the doubts that people have about stretch marks. Read on:

    What Causes Stretch Marks

Stretch marks are caused when the skin stretches beyond its breaking point i.e. the point beyond which no amount of collagen repair can heal the skin. This results in a thin pink, or red or white lines on the skin.
These lines are called stretch marks.
If such a stretching continues, the dermal tissues too start to wear off, getting inflamed in the process which might result in slight internal bleeding as well.

The illustration below will help you to understand the difference between a normal and stretched skin better.

Stretch marks are not always caused due to fat fluctuations. Sometimes stretch marks may also be due to genetic concerns, usual pregnancy effects, a side effect of taking medicines or lotions such as Corticosteroid creams, lotions, and pills which reduce the skin’s elasticity, adrenal glands’ functional disorders or due to diseases such as Cushing’s, Marfan’s or Ehlers-Danlos

Can the Appearance of Stretch Marks be improved?
The sure shot technique for stretch marks removal will be discussed in the later section but there are some other treatments also which have been known to work. These are:

    • Application of creams which contain collagen booster formulations such as tretinoin, isotretinoin etc
    • Microdermabrasion, the treatment which works by creating wounds on the skin to facilitate faster collagen generation and hence skin rejuvenation
    • Fractional photothermolysis which works on the same principle as laser skin rejuvenation also heals the skin well by focus targeting i.e. targeting smaller areas and causing even lesser skin damage.

How does a typical Laser Stretch Mark Removal treatment look like?
At Kosmoderma, we do Fractional Laser Scar Treatment. A breakup of the same for better understanding can be described as below:

Every stretch mark is first targeted individually. Once that is done, a colour blending laser treatment is administered. If some of the stretch marks still remain because of them being differently coloured, a separate laser technology may have to be used. However, given the Indian skin type, this is a pretty rare occurrence.

Once the blending is complete, collagen stimulation is done to ensure a speedy and effective recovery. Post this skin smoothening using peels can be done as and when required.

Finally, no side effects have been reported for any of the treatments so you can be assured of the safety esp when the equipments being used are US-FDA approved.

Hope this helped to answer your queries.

  • Monsoons: Let your Skin Enjoy too!

The result- sometimes you get drenched and other times, you feel as if you carried the umbrella’s weight uselessly.

Now, this was you- a being with fully grown smart brain capable of taking actions as and when required.
    Ever wonder about your skin?
The poor skin- your first line of defence though isn’t used to such changing climatic conditions and even if it suffers, the max it can do is give you subtle signals for help.

But, when you have Kosmoderma by your side, does your skin really need to worry? Well no and this is why we are sharing with you the easiest skin care regime for the monsoons!

Wash your face Twice- at least
Yes, because we know that most of the times you are in office in the air conditioned environment so washing once in the morning and cleansing up well once you reach home will suffice.
In case you travel in between, keep the wet wipes handy! And of course if you use a wipe in between, sunscreen application will have to be done without fail!

Sleep sans any cream on your face
Yes, because your skin needs to breathe and feel at home too. Give it some time to relax and avoid any beauty product application before sleeping

Replace your regular moisturiser with essential oils
And do not apply them after having a bath. Apply them immediately after waking up and then get a good bath with lukewarm water. You can alternate with hot and cold water while bathing but that might be too much of an effort hence-lukewarm.
The reason- you wouldn’t want your pores to be breathing enough to inhale infections that abound during monsoons!

Keep the usage of antiperspirants and deodorants to minimum
Yes, because the pores do not want to get clogged, neither should your sweat accumulate. Just clean up the usual way- soap/body lotion and water

Eat healthy and go low on fat
Will help your internal systems because the metabolism goes a bit slow in monsoons. So why load up?
(PS: It is okay to have pakoras and tea once in a while to enjoy the rains to the fullest but just make sure that the rest of the days, you stick to your health more)

    Get back to the Basics
No fancy makeups or creams, apply sandalwood paste. The purest form and you will see the magic on your own.

    Feel good about yourself
Listen to some good music, dance, read some good books, watch some good tv series and do anything and everything that keeps you happy because a happy you is definitely a healthy and glowing you!

    Hope that helps!

  • Relax your eyes exercises for eye muscle movement

our eyes are always working and struggling with the strain to focus.

Needless to say that hereditary causes apart, most of us are walking around with spectacles on or our crow feet have started to appear already, much earlier than when they ideally should have had.

Now, with such a constant stress, can we do something to sooth up our eyes?
Well Yes! Other than just waiting and going for eye massages or applying creams, there is something you can do daily and at intervals to soothe those tired muscles more effectively.

    Palming
Easiest of all the exercises and still one of the most effective for immediate relief, for a long term one, you will need to repeat this exercise at regular intervals.

    What to do:

    • Rub your palms against each other to warm them up sufficiently
    • Now, cup your eyes with these warm palms
    • Make sure that the palms do not touch the eyes
    • Keep your hands like that for some 2-3 minutes
    • While doing this, ensure that your eyes are closed and you see darkness (try not to focus on the light from the outside since that would be a distraction)
    • When done, open your eyes slowly to avoid any sudden light exposure.

    Eye Rolling
When we say eye rolling, it is not the “rolling your eyes in exasperation”. What we mean here is that you need to gradually roll your eyes clockwise so that your muscles relax.

    What to do:

    • Sit straight with your spine stretched
    • Let your eyes relax, do not focus on anything in particular, let your gaze wander
    • Now, tilt your head a bit so that to look at the ceiling, your eyes still have to tilt upwards. Hold your eyes there for a second
    • Now, gradually move your eyes in a clockwise direction and hold on your eyes for a bit at 90 degrees, 180 degrees, 270 degrees and 0 degrees to the vertical
    • Repeat the process for about 5 times

Caution: Do not do it fast. Do this exercise with a calm mind and with the clear motive of relaxation.

    Distant Gazing
This involves looking aimlessly. Yes, that is the key- do not focus anywhere. Just draw a blank and let your eyes wander.
However, that does not mean that you have to keep moving your eyes. Keep them at a place for a while and then gradually shift.
What can help better- think about a pleasant memory as you gaze into the infinite. This will not just relax your eyes but also put your brain cells at rest

    Blinking
One major reason why our eyes get drained a lot while focussing on our screens is the lack of blink. The brain is by default trained to not blink much if it has to be attentive.

The lack of blinking dries out your eyes and strains the eye muscles more as the timing for them to remain stretched increases. Thus, every time they come back to normal, some elasticity gets lost.
If however, you blink continously (once in 4 seconds being ideal), no such damage happens and your eyes remain lubricated enough to be strained.

Important: while working on laptops or in general focussing on screens, it is natural for the brain to forget the need to blink. You will hence have to train your brain accordingly.
