  • Have you been partying too much?… Tips for Skin & Hair Care

But what about the after effects? Too much partying can leave your complexion looking gray, lackluster and blotchy.

Follow these simple skin tips to counteract these effects.

    • Take off your makeup

Sleeping in your makeup can result in unnecessary exposure to the free radicals in the environment, which the makeup holds on to. Free radicals cause collagen breakdown, which leads to aging skin, i.e. wrinkles and sagging. And of course it also causes breakouts. First wash your face with a gentle cleanser. Use products that include hyaluronic acid or Shea butter to lock in hydration for your skin. It’s important to let your skin rest and breathe properly.

    • Exfoliate

It’s the best way to get rid of dead skin cells, which diffuse light and make your skin look dull. Get into the habit of using a gentle exfoliator every day, and over time your complexion will be much clearer. Exfoliate at night instead of the morning to make sure you remove all traces of grime and stubborn makeup. Go for microdermabrasions or make your own exfoliant by simply putting sugar on a slice of lemon and rub gently over your face.

    • Watch out your diet

A lack of sleep, too much alcohol and sugary and processed foods dehydrate the skin and break down collagen and elastin, making your complexion dull. Tackle the problem from the inside by drinking lots of water and eating plenty of skin-friendly foods, such as colorful vegetables, nuts, beans, peas and fatty fish.

    • Catch up with your sleep

Sleep is crucial, because this is when skin cells turn over happens. Sleep deprivation doesn’t simply impair the normal process of healing in our skin, but it also increases our stress level, which can further limit our sleep. It may also lead to disturbed skin-barrier function and greater water loss from the skin. So make sure to get your beauty sleep.

    • Hydrate

Alcohol is really dehydrating on the body and that includes your skin. So, the morning after a heavy night out, it’s super-important to drench your skin in moisturising products that has a blend of Vitamins C & E that help boost skin’s antioxidant levels and hydrate.

    • Don’t let your eyes reveal it

Lie down and put cold used tea bags over your eyes for about 10 minutes. If you don’t have any tea bags around, you can put spoons in the fridge the night before and put them on your eyes, too! The coolness will help reduce swelling and will help drain any accumulated fluids. Use a creamy concealer to cover dark circles. Make sure the concealer you choose is moisturizing and goes on smoothly, since the skin under your eyes doesn’t produce as much oil as the skin on the rest of your face.

    • Go to a Professional

If you still feel that your skin looks lifeless, get a peel at the skin clinic. A glycolic acid peel offers two benefits to your skin: exfoliation and regeneration. It gets rid of the dull, tough, top layer of skin, rejuvenating the skin cells underneath and resulting in a clearer, fresher, younger-looking complexion. You may also try a revitalizing eye treatment from a skin clinic.

    Home remedy for Skin

For an instant glow, mash ripe bananas with a little honey and a few drops of lemon juice; apply liberally on the face and wash off after 10 minutes with a splash of tepid water. Your skin will look soft, pampered and have a healthy glow.

    What about Hair?

Does the trauma of washing, drying, back-combing, curling, straightening and spraying tire out your tresses? Do your once-lovely locks now feel dry, damaged, limp and lifeless? Follow these tips to revive your hair.

    Post Party Hair Tips

    • Remove product build-up

You spritzed and sprayed your way to party-perfect hair, but those same beauty products have left your locks feeling dry and heavy the day after. To restore your hair’s natural shine and movement, you need to remove the product build-up by washing your traces thoroughly with gentle shampoo .

    • Erase bad smells

As unpleasant as this is, cigarettes, alcohol and sweat (ew!) from the night before seem to manifest themselves in our mane leaving us smelling stale when we wake up in the morning. Freshen up your hair with a scented shampoo for locks that look and smell fresh.

    • Deep condition your hair

Massage your scalp with warm coconut oil. Because it is warm, it will penetrate deeper into your scalp and make your roots stronger. Gently apply the oil to the length of your hair and the ends too. Then wear a shower cap for 20 minutes while your scalp absorbs all the love and pampering! Wash off with a gentle shampoo and condition it with rich, hydrating conditioner.

    Home remedy for Hair

An intensive conditioning-pack for your hair: Mix 1/4 cup of olive oil with 1 egg and apply to hair. Use more olive oil if your hair is very long. Cover your head with aluminium foil, then with a towel that has been warmed in the tumble dryer. Leave on for 30 minutes to an hour, then shampoo as usual.

(You may replace egg with avocado)

  • Get the ‘Moist’ of it.

Selecting the right moisturizer can be difficult for some. Moisturisers at times can be very greasy & heavy or at times they do not moisturize enough . Finding the perfect moisturiser is a trial & error procedure. The key ingredients that seal in moisture are mineral oil, lanolin, petrolatum and Dimethicone. Glycerin, propylene glycol, proteins, urea, and vitamins help attract water into the outer layer of the skin. Some skin moisturizers also contain an alpha hydroxy acid (AHA), which exfoliates dead skin.

The skin on your face is thinner and more sensitive, so it’s a good idea to use a different moisturizer on your face than you do on your body. Find a moisturizer that is smooth & easy to apply . Always apply facial moisturizer immediately after cleansing your face to still-damp skin. Let it set for several minutes before applying make-up, as this will trap the moisture. Do not rub in the moisturizer, but gently pat it on the skin.

    How to Choose?

The amount of moisturizers out there can be overwhelming for many. It’s very important to know your skin’s requirement at a given time. Be flexible. Realize that many factors affect your skin, including weather, hormones, medications, and age. So if your moisturizer doesn’t seem to be working, consider trying a different one. In fact, you may use a heavier one for the cold weather months, and a lighter gel one for warmer weather. Do not be fooled by the pricing or packaging, always pay attention to the ingredients .

    What to Choose?

Understanding what skin type you fall into makes it easier for you to pick the right daily moisturizer. Generally companies label their moisturisers corresponding to the skin type. Look for one that would best suit you skin type.

    • Sensitive skin: Look for fragrance-free and oil-free moisturizers
    • Acne prone Skin: Be careful in choosing a moisturizer when you have acne prone skin. Select moisturizers labeled “non-comedogenic”, which means they won’t clog pores & read up reviews on the product to be sure . However if you suffer from break outs, be sure to change your product immediately.
    • Normal to oily skin : Choose a non-greasy, water-based moisturizer
    • Dry to very dry skin: Try the heavier oil-based products made with mineral oil, glycerin or hyaluronic acid.
    • All Skin Types: Consider using a moisturizer with retinol before bed. Retinol is vitamin A for your skin. It speeds up the cell rejuvenation process. Use it carefully as it may cause a skin irritation, redness or dry skin.
    • It is important to make sure that your daily moisturizer contains Sunscreen that helps protect your skin from harmful UV rays.

  • Can Food Help Prevent Acne?

Let’s talk about food & acne. How food that you eat may cause or aggravate those red bumps on your skin. Most people need a combination of the right diet and other acne treatments. One thing the right acne prevention diet can do is to supply your body and immune system with nutrients to fight acne.

If you try and incorporate the following nutrients in your diet along with proper treatment from a professional and a home care, you can keep acne at bay.

Focus on vitamin A: This fat-soluble vitamin is necessary for healthy skin and a study in Clinical and Experimental Dermatology suggests that vitamin A supplementation can improve acne conditions in patients. Fill up on sweet potatoes, kale, spinach, and carrots to reap the benefits.

Limit dairy: One hotly debated hypothesis says that dairy can aggravate acne; there are strong opinions on both sides. In patients who have no genetic background for acne, dairy plays no role whatsoever. It may not give them acne. But for those who have a propensity for acne and are susceptible to the effects of dairy, it may make their acne much worse.

Add up Zinc: Deficiencies in minerals such as zinc have been linked to acne in some sufferers. Zinc is vital for the structure and function of cell membranes. Good sources of zinc are meat, eggs, mushrooms, whole grain products, and oysters.

Avocado: This tasty green fruit, rich in vitamin E, can also increase your skin’s vitality. Avocado is also a good source of vitamin C, which can reduce skin inflammation and naturally moisturize the skin.

Fatty Fishes: Fish like salmon, mackerel and sardines fight blemishes. Fish is a great source of essential fatty acids like omega-3 and omega-6. These acids help reduce inflammation in our bodies that can trigger the cells to clog pores and potentially cause acne.

Brown Rice: Brown rice is a rich source of vitamin B, protein, magnesium, and several antioxidants. For acne, vitamin B acts as our skin’s stress fighter, which will help regulate hormone levels and prevent the likelihood of breakouts.

Pick the right carbs: Try to avoid refined grains and white flour in breads, pastas, muffins and sweets that can cause a quick spike in blood sugar, which may contribute to acne.

Alfalfa Sprouts: Yes, they may look a little like grass, but these sprouts are packed with valuable, skin-clearing nutrients. Alfalfa sprouts contain live enzymes, which help fight inflammation.

Antioxidants: Besides the above given tips, include lots of fresh veggies & fruits and green tea in your diet that has anti-oxidants. You may take a supplement if you are not sure whether you are eating a balanced diet.

Water & Fibres: Last but not the least, drink plenty of water & include lots of fibers in your diet to flush out toxins that will help in balancing of hormones that plays an important role in acne breakouts.

So be conscious about what you eat for optimal skin health. It’s very tempting to indulge in junk food, but you may suffer the side effects on your body and skin for a long time. That doesn’t mean you have to avoid junk food entirely but try and eat smart and live a healthy life.

  • Tips On Winter Skin

So what can we do about dry, scaly skin in cold weather??
    • Try oil massage before taking a shower. And DO NOT take too hot showers as it will strip off natural oils from your body & make it feel dry & rough.
    • Use pH balanced cleanser for the face & body
    • Use mild face & body scrub to exfoliate dead skin cells at least once a week. This will help with product penetration too.
    • Use Alcohol-free toner just before moisturizing your face. This will trap moisture. Use oil based night creams until winter ends.
    • Last but not the least, sunscreen. Winter sun is as harsh as the summer. So don’t forget to protect yourself from harmful UV rays.
What about hair that looks dry & dull during winter?
    • Use a deep conditioner each time you wash, and be sure to leave it on for at least five minutes.
    • Rinse hair with cool water after you condition- the cooler the better! This will slam the cuticle shut and thereby will trap the moisture, giving your hair a beautiful shine.
    • To prevent breakage or other damage, avoid blow-drying and brushing hair when wet.
    • Regular olive oil massage provides healthy and natural shine to the hair as it conditions from the root to the tip. Plus the breakage will be less as olive oil helps to strengthen the hair roots & promote hair growth! It moisturizes and softens the hair well.
    Tips for Chapped Lips

Chapped lips can occur in people of all ages and genders, particularly if they have dry skin. And in winter, it can become even worse if not taken proper care.

    • Apply lip balm that contains a minimum SPF of 15
    • Drink more water
    • Use a humidifier in the home in dry weather
    • Avoid cold weather conditions or wrap your mouth with a scarf
    • Avoid the habit of licking or biting lips
    Tips for cracked Feet

The skin on our feet is naturally dry, unlike the skin on the rest of the body. During winter months, this can be problematic for people who do not properly moisturize their feet on a regular basis, or who have a medical condition- such as diabetes or athlete’s foot.

    • Moisturize feet, especially the heels, every day with thick cream or lotions containing lactic acid are especially effective and wear cotton socks to bed.
    • Use a humidifier in the home in winter
    • Getting a pedicure regularly also helps.
    Home care:
    Winter mask for Face

Take the 1 tbsp of honey and 1 tbsp of rose water and mix them well. Now apply this pack on the face. Wash the face with after 10 minutes. Honey is the natural moisturizer for the skin rose water tones the skin. This face pack is good to treat the winter dry skin.

    Coconut Cream Hair Mask:

This mask is kind of… sticky, sweet and time consuming to say the least. It’s also worth every minute. Take a chunk of coconut cream and warm it up in your hands. When it’s soft and pliable massage it into your hair. Slowly and carefully wrap your hair up into a warm towel and let the mask sit on your hair for one hour. Wash out with a mild shampoo and let your hair dry normally.

    Soften your lips with honey

Honey is a great moisturizer that also has healing and antibacterial properties to treat chapped lips. Simply apply pure organic honey on your chapped lips several times a day. You can also make a paste of honey and glycerin and apply it before going to bed to enjoy softer lips in the morning.

    Heal cracked heels

Combine a spoonful of olive oil and a few drops of lemon or lavender oil to create a moisturizing cracked-heel cream. Shake the ingredients until they form a thick, milky solution and use when needed. Shake before each use.

So follow these winter tips and keep your skin at its best all through the winter months and be ready to embrace summer with your glowing skin & hair.

  • All About Facials

Get MediFacials only from a professional aesthetician

Also referred to as skin care specialists, esthetician’s job around the world is considered very important and are licensed by state cosmetology boards after passing the requisite examination. Unfortunately, in India there is no concept of licensed esthetician, but there are estheticians who get training from well known professional schools or dermatologists.

It is very important to get MediFacials from a trained person who has a good understanding of the skin. A simple thing like extraction can damage the skin if not performed properly. Estheticians are trained to recognize skin problems and can evaluate the skin using special equipment and magnifying lamps. The esthetician explains pre and post-operative skin care to the client, and understands how to clean and sterilize equipment. Safety & hygiene are also given utmost importance by an esthetician.

    MediFacials are for maintenance:

So why do you go for a MediFacial? So that you can relax? or because you have a party to go to this weekend? Or maybe your wedding date is coming closer & of course it could also be because today you looked in the mirror & realised that you are getting old? There could be many reasons why we feel the need of getting a MediFacial. But after getting one, most of the time we feel that it did not give you any result!! Unfortunately, MediFacials won’t deliver revolutionary results overnight. Think of how your body responds to going to the gym! You will only see results if you gym regularly. Likewise, get MediFacials at least once in four to six weeks to maintain your skin and delay the aging process*. MediFacials are for maintenance and not just pre-event treatments.

You Can and Should Customise Your MediFacials

Every skin differs depending on the type of the skin, lifestyle, age and many other factors. Then how can you get exactly the same MediFacial with the same products that your friend got?

Qualified and experienced estheticians provide guidance through analysis and skin mapping. With skin mapping

they divide the face & neck in different zones so that each zone can be targeted with the treatment products it needs. For a MediFacial to be effective the active ingredients must be able to penetrate the acid mantle and reach living layers of the skin to show the results you want. So it’s very important to customize the MediFacial products to address the skin issues.

    Avoid Excessive Massage

MediFacial massage for more than 10 to 15 minutes could actually harm the skin. Too much massage could loosen the skin. Lymphatic drainage & pressure points should be a part of your MediFacial massage if it has to last for 15 to 20 minutes. If your therapist decides to perform lymphatic drainage or pressure point when you are under the steam then no more than 10 to 12 minutes of actual MediFacial massage should be done later. Too much massage can also irritate the skin. Your therapist must choose massage styles like Effleurage, Petrissage, Friction, Tapotement, Vibration, Shiatsu, Lymphatic Drainage, etc according to your skin condition and not just do same massage steps for everyone as it may counteract. It might feel good if done for too long, but as mentioned before, too much of massage can be harmful to your skin.

Your skin may actually look dull for a couple of days

If you have a big event coming up, don’t schedule your MediFacial in the days leading up to it. Plan to do it about a week before because a really intensive MediFacial often leaves you a little red or blotchy for a day or two before the glow kicks in.

If you get MediFacials once in a blue moon, then be prepared to get a few breakouts as too much build up of dead skin cells cannot be removed in just one attempt and as massage produces more oil, it may get clogged with the dead skin cells that may result in breakouts. Be sure to use antibacterial products on all of the areas your esthetician addressed during extraction for the next few days to protect against additional flare-ups.

So what are you waiting for?? Visit the nearest clinic/centre and opt for a MediFacial …

Keep your skin , healthy & rejuvenated all year round !!

  • Honeymoon Beauty Tips

What are the things a newly wed bride should carry in her honeymoon bag for her beauty regimen?

Creams, hairsprays, body lotion-all those products take up tons of space. Streamline your routine by packing beauty essentials that pull double-duty or just carry the most essential products in a travel kit size.

    • Facial Cleanser,Toner, Moisturizer
    • Sunscreen
    • Body lotion
    • Make up
    • Facial wipes
    • Feminine Hygiene

To minimize breakouts while you’re on honeymoon, avoid touching your skin while you travel. You can pick up any number of unknown bacteria that can result in any number of skin problems. If you’re going to apply makeup while you’re in transit, use an antibacterial hand wash on your hands first to further protect your skin.

Does she need any special preparations depending upon her honeymoon destination?

Smart packing will make for a better trip. Check the weather forecast earlier in the week and see what the lows and highs are looking like at your destination.

Summer / Beach / Monsoon Honeymoon

    Preload Sunscreen

Before a beach / summer honeymoon, wear sunscreen on your body every night. Do it for two to three weeks ahead so the sunscreen builds up in your stratum corneum, and it makes your skin less likely to burn.

In case if you get a burn, treat it properly. In the event that you do get a sunburn (it happens to the best of us), you can follow these steps to speed relief. Apply a lotion with aloe to soothe and hydrate the skin. Then, drink green tea and take an antioxidant supplement- This will do the trick-to help prevent free radical damage to your cells. You can also take ibuprofen every four hours to reduce discomfort and redness.

With the right sunscreen, clothing, and accessories, both you and your skin can have a beautiful time at the hottest destinations.

    Use facial mist

These facial mists “have natural minerals that will calm skin, and they make you look dewy. Plus, when you sweat, you lose minerals necessary for healthy skin so these are used to compensate for the loss.

An in-clinic salicylic acid peel twice a month will help balance oil secretion. It clears up dulling, dead skin cells, which not only helps even out any discoloration, but also draws excess oil out of the pores and leaves skin less shiny for the hot destination. It also clears out the pores, kills bacteria inside, and slows oil production, and it tightens the look of pores.

You may take Mesoglow (Multivitamin injections) to get the shine you want on your D day without worrying about breakouts. The effects of mesoglow last for about 3 – 6 months which will ideally cover your honey moon period.

    Moisturize your skin and hair

Moisturizing is a very important factor if you wish to maintain your health and your skin and hair radiant looking. Drink plenty of water, whether it’s somewhere on a beach or a mountain resort, as dehydration is your skin’s most feared enemy. Maintain your hair’s moisture by applying nourishing masks which will leave your locks looking amazing and much easier to style.

    Use exfoliant

Pores look more obvious in hot, humid weather. Use of a mild face & body exfoliants will make you look flawless & radiant.

    Use appropriate accessories

No summer sun protection is complete without a wide-brimmed hat and sunglasses. A big hat ensures that your face is shielded from the sun, and protects areas that we inevitably miss with sunscreen. And when it comes to sunglasses, look for a wrap-around style that protects the entire area around the eyes. These two accessories not only look fashionable, but also help prevent wrinkles and other signs of sun damage.

    Winter destination honeymoon

    Moisturize More

You may have found a moisturizer that works just fine in spring and summer. But for cold weather conditions find an “ointment” moisturizer that’s oil-based, rather than water-based, especially if you have dehydrated skin as the oil will create a protective layer on the skin that retains more moisture than a cream or lotion. (Hint: Many lotions labeled as “night creams” are oil-based), but choose your oils with care because not all oils are appropriate for the face. Instead, look for “nonclogging” oils, like avocado oil, mineral oil, primrose oil, or almond oil. Shea oil – or butter – is controversial, because it can clog facial pores. You can also look for lotions containing “humectants”, a class of substances (including glycerine, sorbitol, and alpha-hydroxy acids) that attract moisture to your skin.

    Slather on the Sunscreen

No, sunscreen isn’t just for summertime. Winter sun – combined with snow glare – can still damage your skin. Try applying a broad-spectrum sunscreen to your face and your hands (if they’re exposed) about 30 minutes before going outside. Reapply frequently if you stay outside a long time.

    Use cleansing milk:

Use a creamy facial cleanser. Cleansers, which you use to remove make-up usually, strip away moisture and during winter, this problem gets magnified. So keep your face shiny by using creamy cleanser or in case of oily skin use water based cleanser.

Keep those lips pink & soft

One of the biggest problems you may face in cold weather during your honeymoon is chapped lips. Use a lip balm with at least SPF 15 and preferably one with antiseptic agents to aid in healing. Some lip balm products are made with tea tree oil, which helps heal painful cracks.

    Take care of them too!

Your hands, feet, knees and elbows need to be looked after too. Use products containing shea butter, petrolatum, mineral oil, tea tree oil or glycerine & keep your body soft & smooth.

Does she need to take care of her diet during or before the trip?

We all know that drinking water is the key to clear skin. So make sure you keep yourself hydrated.

It’s way too easy to eat junk when you travel especially on your honeymoon. Watermelon and cucumber are very hydrating and cooling. Oranges are always a good choice because the smell is a proven mood lifter and helps to relieve stress of annoying airplane seatmates or highway traffic. Cherries and blueberries are also great snacks & may help you keep those dark circles away. So eat as many fruits as you can.

Too much restriction on a diet especially when you are on your honeymoon is not fair. So just relax & enjoy. We are there to take care of your skin & hair when you come back.

  • Is water that you use, hard on your skin?

So what can you do when you are facing hard water problem?

    • People can do a few things to limit the negative effects of hard water on skin. Most experts agree the best thing to do is avoid hard water.
    • Installing a water softener can help remove many of the minerals in the water, making it softer. If installing a water softener is not possible, you should limit your exposure to hard water by taking shorter showers
    • Bottled or filtered water should also be used to wash the face and hair or at least use the last rinse of soft water.
    • For the body (not face), use body wash instead of soap. Most body washes are made using detergents which aren’t affected by minerals in hard water, so they foam up and clean your skin every time. For face, use a self-foaming face wash or a cleansing milk to keep your skin clean as foaming cleansers may not lather up in hard water, and gel-based face washes may not rinse away nicely.
    • Because of the fact you don’t get a good lather with hard water, you’ll find yourself using more soap to get clean, which only adds to the problem. To prevent this, individuals with hard water should use only the normal recommended amount, or less, if possible.

Hard water may not be the cause of skin conditions, but there is a lot of evidence indicating it can aggravate things further. With soft water, you are more likely to have the beautiful, clear skin you want.

  • Is your hair splitting you apart?

When the protective outer layer of the hair cuticle wears away because of external stressors, Split ends occur. These splits can be generic at the end of the hair, split occurring at the middle of the hair strand which appears as a loop, and repetitive splits occurring on the same strand. Once the internal structure of the hair is exposed, it results in structural changes to the hair shaft over a period of time and constitutes hair weathering. Weathered hair loses moisture more rapidly than normal hair, and hence, looks dull and dry and becomes weak causing split ends.

Weathering is not commonly seen in men as their hair is constantly cut, which helps the damage (if any) to be trimmed off.

What are the main causes of split ends?

    • Over exposure of hair to the sun, pollution, dust and excessive chemicals while styling.
    • Using scalding hot water while washing your hair.
    • Using harsh shampoos or too much serum and styling gels too frequently.
    • Using hard water to wash your hair (water that contains too much chlorine will cause color to wash out and also cause the ends to split).
    • Lack of regular trimming and conditioning schedules.
    • Over use of heat, hair dryers, hair straightners or curlers can cause irreparable damage to your hair follicles.
    • Using the wrong kind of hair brush and comb can also accumulate damage to hair ends.
    • Teasing or back combing your hair regularly.
    • Using holding sprays or mousse on your hair and not washing them off.

While the only way to rid yourself of rough ends is to have them snipped off, here are some tips for repairing and preventing split ends.

    Go Gentle:
    1. Apply shampoo carefully, too much shampoo can strip away healthy oils, leaving your hair vulnerable to damage. Avoid shampoos with sulfate or paraben.
    2. Wash with gentle water. Rinse your hair with the coolest water you can stand. Minerals or chlorine in your water can damage your hair. Consider a water softening system if your local water is “hard” .
    3. Use conditioner. After shampooing, apply conditioner along the length of your hair, leave-in conditioner will add extra protection that stays on
    4. Dry hair gently. Vigorously rubbing your hair dry with a towel is not a good idea. Instead, gently squeeze dripping wet hair with a towel
    5. Find a gentle comb or brush. Slowly run a wide-tooth comb through hair to aid you in untangling your hair, not pulling it out. This prevents the snaps and breakage you can incur when you try to brush out hair
    6. Protect your hair from the sun. Ultraviolet rays can be as damaging to your hair as your skin. Wear your hair in a bun underneath a hat, or use an umbrella or leave-in sunscreen conditioner
    7. Protect your hair while sleeping. Sleep with your hair tied in a braid or bun to help prevent tangles and breakage.
    8. Oiling the hair. It can lubricate the hair shaft, preventing it from splitting. Apply oil to the middle and ends of your hair.
    Limit damaging services
    1. If you need to speed up the drying, use a blow dryer on a medium or low setting. Hold it a few inches away from your hair and dry hair in a downward direction to minimize damage.
    2. Lay off the heat styling tools. Heat treatments denature the keratins (proteins) of the hair shaft weakening it and making it prone to split ends. This includes hot blow drying, heat styling, straightening and curling through heat, and steam treatments. So try to limit these services
    3. Treatments like hair color, highlights are particularly damaging. Try to use them only when necessary.
    Eat a balanced diet.

  • ‘Beautify’ Your Pout!

Heredity: The most prevalent cause of pigmented lips is in our genes. Such pigmentation can be removed only with cosmetic procedures.

Pregnancy and Hormonal changes: Some pregnant women develop dark irregular patches on their face, most commonly on the upper cheek, nose, lips, and forehead. This is called the ‘mask of pregnancy’.It is thought to be due to stimulation of pigment-producing cells by female sex hormones so that they produce more melanin pigments (dark colored pigments) when the skin is exposed to the sun.

Dehydration: Not drinking enough water and constant licking of the lips can cause dehydration. As much as dehydration affects the body and skin, it also affects the lips by drying it out which causes darkening after a while. Drink enough water throughout the day to keep your lips moisturised.

Smoking: This is one cause of lip darkening that a lot of us know about. Apart from a long list of problems linked with smoking, having dehydrated and dark lips and discoloured teeth give you one more reason to quit.

Caffeine & Hot Stuff: The same way caffeine can stain the teeth, it can also make the lips darker depending on how much you consume. It also causes dehydration and thereby chapped lips. You can counter this effect by drinking water with your coffee or tea or try cutting back a cup or two daily.

Poor Diet: We all know anemia is the deficiency in the quantity of oxygen supplied in the blood. Lip discoloration is often associated with the iron deficient anemia. If you don’t take a nutritious diet, your lips are bound to suffer. Deficiency of vitamins E and C is another reason behind dark lips.

Lip Products: Allergens in skin care products can contribute to darkened lips. These allergic reactions are caused by dyes or fragrances in your lipsticks and lip glosses. Contact Dermatitis is most often caused in women, it is caused due to cosmetics that are cheap or not of adequate quality.

Sun Exposure: Our lips are very sensitive to UV rays. Constant Sun exposure can discolor your lips also known as a skin disorder called solar lentigines popularly called lentigo. Opt for Lip balms that give you protection from UV Rays.

Some precautions/measure to help prevent/resolve lip discolouration an dryness

Exfoliate Your Lips: You can make a yummy lip scrub by mixing sugar and honey and applying on your lips for about 5 minutes. Honey is a natural antioxidant that helps protect lips from damage and sugar will remove rough lip skin. Apply a thin coat of lip balm once you’re done scrubbing, so your lips don’t dry out.

Keep your lips Moisturised: Make sure that your lips have ample amounts of moisture. This can be accomplished by:

    • Applying lip balm that contains a minimum SPF of 15. You can also try natural lip softeners such as butter or vaseline to help condition your lips.
    • Drinking more water
    • Using a humidifier in the home in dry weather
    • Avoiding cold weather conditions or wrapping your mouth with a scarf
    • Avoiding the habit of licking or biting lips

Home Remedy: A mixture of lime, honey and glycerine applied regularly could help lighten dark lips. It can also keeps your lips pink, soft & well moisturized. Just apply it every day for a few weeks or until you see positive effects.

See a Dermatologist: Severe dryness and cracking that doesn’t improve with self-care measures may need a dermatologist’s attention. Cheilitis is a condition marked by cracked skin at the mouth corners, as well as several cracks on your lips. A dermatologist can determine whether your dry lips are simplychapped or if you have cheilitis.

It will help a lot to see a doctor. In general peels or lasers could be very helpful to address these lip concerns, but it is important to rule out any skin conditions first.

  • Say “No” to Dark Underarms….

    What’s the problem?
When it comes to your armpits, it is the melanin that causes the area to become darker either through external assault or internal aggression. What exactly are these aggressions? Before trying any of the underarm skin whitening remedies, treatments or creams, ensure you know the cause of dark under arms. Otherwise, you might be treating a wrong cause where you are likely to fail.

Here are some common causes that leave you with undesirable under arms.

Use of alcohol-based Deodorants and Antiperspirants
Antiperspirants are the most used products against excessive sweating. They work by seeping into pores and plugging sweat ducts. Aluminum compounds and other active antiperspirant ingredients are often dissolved in alcohol because it dries quickly and feels cool when applied. But it may also dry out the skin and cause antiperspirant irritation. Although rare, there could be a likelihood that some ingredients in deodorants and antiperspirants could cause dark skin under armpits. Try switching brands or using a deodorant instead of an antiperspirant.

    Excessive rubbing / Friction
If the flab on your underarms is constantly rubbing against something, it may result in hyper- keratosis, which is the thickening of the skin which actually provides protection against irritation. With hyper-keratosis comes hyperpigmentation, also known as “discoloration”. Unfortunately, there’s nothing you can do to prevent this due to the anatomy of your underarms. But you can minimize the friction. Avoid wearing rough clothing that can aggravate your underarm skin. Also, try to wear looser clothes that minimize this contact.

    Hormonal changes
Periodically, your body goes through hormonal changes, like when you get pregnant. This causes your body to increase the production of melanin, leading to blotchiness, uneven skin tone, and skin darkening on the upper lip, neck and yes, your underarms as well. Sometimes the discoloration goes away. But for some, it may stay on even after your pregnancy. See a dermatologist if the problem persists.

    Bacteria
If you do not clean your under arms properly, they will obviously appear black and dark. Dead skin will build up and microorganisms will thrive in the dark and sweaty conditions of your underarms. This may lead to a chronic infection in the deeper layers of your underarm skin, which then leads to the formation of rough, discolored skin that is red in the first place but slowly changes to become brown. So it’s important to wash your armpits regularly with an anti-bacterial soap. Preferably use a wash with tea tree. Tea tree oil has natural antiseptic properties and is very effective in killing bacteria.

A medical condition called acanthosis nigricans.
Dark underarms may also be as a result of a medical condition that is known as acanthosis nigricans, which is often associated with insulin resistance, obesity, hormonal disorders, certain medications, and cancer. Areas affected feel velvety and are a dark gray or brown color. Consult a doctor for proper diagnosis and treatment. There are many treatments available at skin clinics like laser and peels that could lighten the pigmentation.

    Shaving / Waxing
Know how your guy’s stubble looks dark and rough by the evening? Well, the same is happening to your underarm skin if shaving is your preferred method for hair removal. Underarm hair that has been shaved tends to be darker and coarser. Underarm waxing has its own drawbacks. It doesn’t truly get rid of underarm hair, but only reduces it. This means the hair will grow back and as it grows back, you will have to undergo another round of waxing, which can be uncomfortable at times and never ending! Instead of shaving or waxing, consider laser hair removal. These procedures remove hair below the skin’s surface and reduce the visibility of the hair.

    Try Laser Hair Removal
As the saying goes, prevention is always better than cure, the best way to prevent dark under arms would be Laser Hair Removal as it’s a hair reduction*. Not only can laser hair removal of the armpits erase hair growth, but it also wipes away follicles and stubble that make your underarm dark-coloured and unsightly. So you need not worry about that unwanted stubble and can spread your arms lovingly, anytime!

    Home remedies
You may try exfoliating your underarm with lemon & sugar scrub or soda bicarbonate with water. You may also try applying potato or cucumber juice for your dark underarms. But if these remedies do not show results, please consult a dermatologist.
