  • 4 Reasons why you get Split Ends

which give the hair its volume and shine. However as the hair grows, the layers get worn down little by little. So if you have long hair the cuticle isalmost worn out at the tips. As the cuticle gets thinner, so the hair becomes weaker eventually splitting at the tip. This is what gives your hair a dry, damaged look, and your hair gets the split ends – not a very healthy sign for the hair.

For most the remedy is to quickly snip it off at the tip, but they seem to reappear within a week. The reason is that random snipping off the split ends leave the hair strands vulnerable to further splitting. So before you start ‘losing your hair’ over your split ends this is what you need to know.

    Structure of the strand

The hair structure has three layers – the cuticle, cortex, and medulla.

Medulla is the inner core which contains loosely packed keratin, pigment and fatty acid. Over this is the cortex which is the middle layer and the most important part of hair shaft when it comes to giving hair its texture, colour and strength. It again contains keratin and fatty acids which give the hair shaft elasticity, and tensile strength. Cortex also has the main pigment component that gives colour to your hair. Over the cortex is the cuticle which is the outermost layer that is composed of layers and layers of small dead keratin cells lying overlapped on each other like fish scales. The smoothness and shine of your hair depends on how flat these scales are lying on top of each other.

    How split appears

Split ends occur when the hair shaft splits into two or more mostly at the tip. For long hair the strand might even split at the middle length and even at the tip. This makes the hair appear dry, discoloured and definitely damaged. Here are the key reasons why this happens to your hair.

#1:Chemical treatments done to the hair. When you get any kind of chemical-based hair treatment done, your cuticles get lifted and the cortex gets exposed to the chemicals.

The treatments could be your permanent colour, straightening or perming solutions and such. Chemical dyes, bleaching agents, hair relaxants and perming solutions all progressively hurt the natural structure of the strands weakening them.

Repeated exposure starts to weather the strands making the cuticles weak – they become prone to damage and breakage. Split ends are a result if the weakness in the strands. It also signals that hair has lost its tensile strength and become brittle.

#2: Physical damage done through heat and combing.Mosttend to comb their wet hair which should be a strict no-no. When your hair is wet, it naturally stretches up to 30% without damage. But when you comb your wet hair it gets stretched beyond that which weakens the cuticles and the middle cortex. Over combing causes breakage. The repeated friction lifts away the cuticles making them weak. Excessive brushing of dry hair harms the already weak hair tips, fraying them at the end – result split ends.

The other big cause of split ends is heat. Blow dryers, straighteners, curling irons use to manipulate hair ad also speed up hair drying again harm the top layer. These cause excessive dryness to the strands and weaken the cuticles. The thermal styling devices dehydrate the strands and make the cuticles brittle which in turn splits the hair. Continuous exposure can also lead to breakage.

#3: Environmental causes. Just like how UV rays harm our skin, similarly they impact the hair structure. UV rays can reach the cortex and hurt the pigment production capabilities of the shaft, thus lightening your hair. The UTV rays also damages the protein and keratin bonds of your hair impacting the strength, elasticity and shine. The rays weaken the bond which gives your strands a brittle and rough texture prone to breakage and as you guessed it, split ends.

#4: Underlying health problem. Your hair is the first part of your body to show if you are suffering from any kind of internal imbalance, whether it is vitamin deficiency, hormones or any other ailment. Lack of vitamins and essential minerals also lead to brittle hair. Split ends are also a sign that your body might be lacking something.

    How to prevent split ends

First of all stop abusing your weak, damaged hair. Stop harsh chemical treatments for a while and do not randomly cut your split ends. You will only aggravate the situation.

Improve your vitamin and essential mineral intake through food and some health supplements. Give your hair extra support through diet consisting of tofu, vegetables, fruits, walnuts, flaxseed and milk.

Next strengthen your roots and moisturise your strands with regular oil massage. Use nourishing oils like almond or sesame to moisturise the scalp and form a protective barrier over the hair shaft.

Use a gentle, creamy shampoo to wash your scalp and hair and then condition the strands with a hair mask rather than a conditioner. It helps seal in the cuticles and reduces the appearance of split ends. Post wash treat your split ends with a hair repairing serum thathave ceramides and keratin to fill the gaps in your hair fiber and seal the cuticles.

  • Non-Surgical Facelift

While a conscious diet, healthy lifestyle with adequate exercise and proper skin care regime can affect the way your skin looks and feel, but you cannot really prevent the natural aging process. As a result your collagen production slows down and your skin loses elasticity.

However, that does not mean that you should accept the fact and do nothing about it. Agreed the thought of actually going under the doctor’s knife for a nip and tuck can be little off putting, but that should not stop you.

Check out these non-surgical procedures that help you look your best.

    1: Injectibles or Liquid Lifting

This is the most common type of procedure which you can get done in an afternoon, without any side effects. The results are almost instantaneous. Botox injections are the most common injectable which are used on your forehead, around your mouth and around the eyes. These are used to relax very deep lines and furrows that get formed due to frowning and drooping.

Dermal fillers like Restylane or Juvederm, which are hyaluronic acid based, can be used to add natural suppleness to the skin. They can be used to fill up the hollows around your features to give you a more youthful look.

When the two are given in tandem to restore lost volume in cheeks, lift the cheekbones and sagging brows, redefine the jaw-line, minimize the appearance of jowls, remove under-eye dark circles and diminishing lines and wrinkles.

The effect of this treatment stays on for about a year. The duration of the treatment depends on the severity of the case and the amount of fillers that need to be put.

    2: Ultrasound-based Facelift

Currently there are two popular forms of ultrasound-based facelift procedure – HIFU and Ultherapy. The benefit of getting an ultrasound based treatment is that unlike in Botox, if you get a facelift done with HIFU or Ultherapy you are able to maintain natural facial expressions.

In High Intensity Focused Ultrasound (HIFU) powerful ultrasound is used to lift and tighten your skin. It is a safe and very effective non-surgical facelift procedure. This treatment improves the tone and all the features of your face such as your eyes, cheeks, mouth, chin and skin.

In Ultherapy an energy device that transmits focused ultrasound to the skin is used for lifting the skin on the neck, chin and brow. The skin responds by stimulating the growth of fresh, new collagen and elastin to lift and tighten loose skin over time, without any downtime.

    3: Thread Lifting

If you are looking for a facelift treatment that is non-surgical, yet has a long lasting effect, then Thread Lift is an option you can look into. It safe, conservative and effective and long lasting up to 3 year.

In this procedure, specially designed surgical threads are inserted into the targeted through tiny incisions. The threads, which get attached to the skin tissue, are pulled to lift the drooping areas of the face and smooth out the lines. This procedure can actually be done under 2 hours and the results are visible immediately. The effect stays for 8 to 12 months, till the time when the threads naturally biodegrade and get absorbed by the body. This is great for lifting your brow area, middle of the face, jawlines, forehead and the temple area.

    4: Thermage

In Thermage radiofrequency is used to smooth and improve skin texture. The frequency works by tightening existing collagen and improving the elasticity of the skin. It also stimulates the production of new collagen.Thermage is a great procedure to opt for when you start to notice fine lines around your brows, eyes, and jawline. It can also give your skin a natural looking lift and smoothness.

    5: Fractional Laser or Fraxel

In procedure with Fractional Lasers or Fraxel, an intense beam of light is passed through the skin at the dermal level which causes tiny injuries through the area called microtheral zones (MTZ) of injury and heat. This stimulates the skin to produce collage and elastin to repair the dermal area, and improve the texture of the skin.

However, you will need a few sittings to get the best results. Also expect some redness and sensitised skin and peeling. Fraxel helps reduce fine lines, scars, wrinkles and age spots quite effectively.

  • 5 Beauty Myths and the Truth Behind Each

Myth: Fairness creams can completely change your complexion, making you very fair.

Truth: You cannot really fight your genes. If you are dusky to dark you cannot become fair, no matter what you try. So fairness creams cannot really make you fair – no matter what the product ad says. These potions just help in lightening your skin tone. These creams have sun protection and melanin blockers which work together to protect your skin from tanning and prevent extra pigment from forming. They help clear out your complexion so that your skin appears lighter in colour. While you cannot become fair, but these creams do smooth out the complexion and make your skin up to two shades lighter.

Myth: All natural products are harmless and are good for you.

Truth: Not necessarily. Even natural products contain acids and minerals which can react with your skin. You might be genetically predisposed to be allergic to them. Whether naturally sourced or lab synthesised, you have to be aware of the actives that go into a product. Even the so called herbal products have some chemicals to stabilise the actives and increase shelf life. So it is important that you test a product for efficacy and allergic reactions, even if it is made of natural actives, before going all out in using it.

Myth: People with oily skin do not need moisturisers.

Truth:It is the biggest myth that most people with oily skin believe in. If it were true, then oily-skinned people would not have dry patches on their skin. The truth is that all skin types need moisturisers. Oily skin means excess of sebum or skin’s natural oils on the skin, and not necessarily the right moisture or water balance. That is why you need to apply moisturiser. Moisturisers retain the hydration balance of the skin, making it supple and soft to the touch. Oily skin types should use a light gel-based moisturiser, or a light lotion or moisturising milk. You should avoid creamy moisturisers that are heavy on the emollients (oil-based actives). Avoid over washing your face, and moisturise twice a day.

Myth: Botox and dermal fillers are essentially the same and serve the same purpose.

Truth: Not really. While Botox eases your muscles and minimises the appearance of fine lines, dermal fillers add volume or fill out parts of your features that have lost shape due to loss of fat or are hollow naturally. The only thing same about them is that they are both administered with needles as in they are injected into your skin.

Botox is used to deal with frown lines and can help reshaping your lower face. It can be used to tighten your neck area and firm up your jaw line – giving more definition to your face. Botox works on the underlying muscles in your face.

Dermal fillers are a great replacement to cosmetic surgery and have a natural effect. Dermal fillers can be used for defining the nose area, cheek enhancement, chin enhancement, lip line, temple hollows etc.

  • Pros and Cons of Hair Transplant

Now it is natural to lose up to 100 strands on a daily basis. It is part of the natural hair growth and fall cycle. However, if you are losing more than that or hair comes out in clumps, and you see thinning of the hair volume, then you are experiencing hair loss.

6 things to know about hair growth and fall

Your hair shaft grows from the follicle on the scalp. The root or the follicle is located beneath the skin. There are over 100,000 follicles on your scalp.
The hair growth cycle has four phases – Anagen, Catagen, Telogen and Exogen.
Anagen is the growing phase, and is the first phase of hair. At any given time around 90 percent of the follicles are in anagen phase. The anagen phase lasts between 2 to 7 years – this determines the length of your hair.
Catagen is the transition phase. This is when the hair is getting ready to fall. This phase lasts 2 to 3 weeks. This is when blood supply is cut off from the roots. This hair is known as club hair.
Telogen phase is the resting phase, when new hair growth takes place below the club hair. This lasts for about 3 months. At any given time 10 to 15 percent if your hair is in telogen phase.
Exogen is the shedding phase when your old hair (resting club hair) falls making way for the new strands to push through. It’s ok to lose up to 100 strands a day.
Hair thinning in men and women

The hormone called DHT in men and women can have an impact on the quality of the hair growth. It can lead to hair thinning. DHT leads to follicle constriction, which slows down the hair growth.

In men hair loss is often called male pattern balding – receding hair line and complete baldness on crown and a horse patch of hair from ear to the nape. In women, it is more about thinning in certain patches rather than complete balding. Hair starts to thin around the hair part. Baldness can occur in patches due to alopecia or due to malfunction in the endocrine glands.

    Hair transplant as a solution

Hair transplantation is a type of surgery where your own hair follicles are taken from one site and transplanted into the bald area.

The most common techniques for Hair transplant include Follicular Unit Transplant (FUT) and Follicular Unit Extraction (FUE).

In FUT the surgeon removes a 6 to 10 inch skin strip from the back of the head. This is called harvesting hair follicles from the donor area. It is then divided it into grafts of either individual hair or a group of hair. The number of grafts usually depends on the nature of the bald patch.

In FUE however, the surgeon shaves the back of the head and removes (harvests) the follicles one by one. The procedure of planting the graft is same after this for both the techniques.

The duration or the sittings of your procedure depends on the area and severity of baldness.

There is a recovery phase for this surgery is 2 to 5 days. It can be mildly painful, which is expected of any surgery. The transplanted hair falls down in 2 to 3 weeks post-surgery. It takes a few months for the new growth to come – 60 percent of the hair cpmes out in 6 to 9 months.

Who can opt for hair transplant?

Hair experts say that men with more defined balding pattern are better candidates for hair transplant procedure. They have defined receding hairline, and complete loss. Also they are not as impacted by follicle killing DHT as women. Harvesting grafts from donor areas becomes easy and transplants are more stable.

Women,on the other hand, have diffused hair loss and thinning, which means they do not have stable donor areas from where grafts can be harvested. Also the hormone DHT a stronger impact on women’s follicles. So when grafts are harvested from DHT affected areas, the transplanted strands remain unstable. The procedure often fails for women with thinning hair.

There are certain cases where women can opt for hair transplant procedure. Those who have distinct pattern baldness can opt for this procedure. Also women who have lost hair due to trauma like burns, accidents or scarring can go for hair transplantation. Women who have suffered hair loss due to non-hormonal causes can also try hair transplant procedures.

  • Understanding Skin Ageing

You must have noticed how your skin looks pale or unhealthy when you are not feeling well. And. Like everything else, skin is also the first one to show signs of ageing if not taken care. So what happens to it when we say that your skin has started showing signs of age? Let’s find out:

    Skin’s structure

Skin by and large has six layers but what really matters to us are the three major layers. The top layer, called the epidermis consists of dead cells with some clumped melanin – the pigment that gives your skin some colour and some germinating cells at the base.

Below the epidermis is the dermis which is the central layer of the skin where you have a mesh of collagen and elastin. Dermis is also where the hair roots, oil glands, sweat glands, and the capillaries that supply blood and take the toxins away, nerve endings and ground substance are located. Underneath the dermis is the fatty tissue layer which has more blood vessels and a lot offat that act as cushion to your skin.

    Young skin vs old

Look at a baby’s or a young person’s skin, it is round, plump, and soft, and when you touch it, the skin bounces back. There’s spring to it. The skin feels supple and smooth. Funnily, a beautiful skin is often compared to a baby’s bottom or cheeks, because that is soft, supple and has even skin tone.

Healthy young skin will have a smooth texture, and will look and feel hydrated. However, the reality is that skin starts to age with your natural growth process. As you start to grow older the fat pockets under your skin starts to get shrunk and face starts to get thinner.

For most people 20’s is when the skin looks and feels at its best. Teens would have been spent dealing with acne and/or oily skin issues. It is in the 20’s that your skin stabilises and it has a natural clarity and suppleness. However, that changes as you cross your 30’s. The real aging process starts then.

    Underneath aging skin

So what really happens in this skin aging process? The first sign of skin aging is that it looks dehydrated. There is pigmentation, dryness, and the pores look larger. You start to notice fine lines and creases. The key sign is that your skin starts to look dull.

There is moisture loss along with uneven sebum production leading to dullness. Sebum, your skin’s natural oil, gives it a glowing clarity. In the second phase the fat in the subcutaneous level starts to shrink. This impacts the bounce and suppleness of the collagen mesh that sits in the dermis. Elastin, the building block of skin also loses its elasticity.

Fine lines and wrinkles are signs that your collagen structure under the skin is collapsing. Weak collagen and elastin means that your skin is no longer taut enough to bounce back naturally, and needs external support to stay youthful.

As you move near your 40’s, the skin cells also stop absorbing moisture efficiently from the body and environment. This causes the skin to look dehydrated and patchy. This is also the time when skin is vulnerable to external pollutants and sun’s destructive rays. The dehydrated skin starts to look pigmented and patchy due to uneven melanin production.

In the natural aging process, skin sagging takes place as you near your 50’s when skin loses all its elasticity. It slackens so that your features start to droop. You notice sagging in the eye lids, mouth, jawline and neck.

    Dealing with aging skin

While you cannot stop skin’s natural aging process, but you can definitely prolong its beauty with the right care. Healthy skin habits like eating fresh fruits, drinking lots of water, avoiding cigarettes and excessive alcohol, and sun exposure keep skin clear and glowing. Along with that a regular skin care regime with cleanser, toner, and moisturiser go a long way in keeping skin young and supple.

But, the aforementioned can only work to an extent and they are usually more effective when used for maintenance or as a side treatment. After a certain age, signs of aging become inevitable. For the lucky ones, the signs come slowly but for most, fine lines, wrinkles and skin sags become very evident. It is for these aging signs that people undergo injectable treatments, fillers or tissue tightening treatments such as HiFu and Ultherapy.

  • How you can remove birthmarks

Birthmarks are formed due excess pigment deposition in certain areas under the skin during foetal development. Birthmarks do not really pose any medical issue. Birthmarks are often pigment producing cells called melanocytes or can also be made of blood vessels.

    So what really are birthmarks?

You have pigmented birthmarks which are formed by the accumulation of pigment under your skin. These pigmented birthmarks are coloured brown to black. In some cases the area might be lighter because of the lack of pigment in the area. These appear whitish in colour.

Then there are the vascular birthmarks which are red or purple in colour. It occurs due to the constriction of blood vessels in the area.

Your birthmarks can be flat or elevated. One thing to note is that your birthmarks can evolve or change in size in the formative years.

    Types of birthmarks

Port wine stain: The most common type of birthmark, it looks like wine a stain on skin, and is a vascular birthmark. This varies in size, and commonly occurs on face. Port wine marks can actually grow in size or look more prominent as you grow older.

Salmon patch: This kind is pale pink in colour and appears in small babies. It is also a vascular birthmark. This is often seen on the face or the neck of a bay after birth, and generally vanishes over time.

Café-au-lait spots: These are coffee coloured patches and are pigmented birthmarks. These can appear in any part of the body. In most cases a person might have more than one of such marks in the body.

Mongolian spots: Mongolian spots are pigmented birthmarks and are bluish grey in colour. It often looks like a bruise. It generally appears on the back or buttocks. This is the most common type for people with darker skin tone.

Congenital moles: These are large black or brown marks, which might be raised, are quite common type of birthmark. This is also a form of pigmented birthmark, which can get raised as you reach puberty.

    How to remove birthmarks

While birthmarks are not really harmful but for many it may give rise to cosmetic issue. This istrue especially if it is on the face or on more obvious place. The treatment depends on the type of birthmark it is. The approach is different for both pigmented and vascular marks.

Pigmented birthmarks can be cleared or lightened using laser treatment. There are two types of laser treatment that can be used – Pulse Dye Laser or NDYag Laser. The final decision lies with the doctor depending on the severity of the case. Lasers are targeted at the pigments to break them, which are then naturally removed from the body through the lymphatic system.

In case of the vascular birthmark minor cosmetic surgery might be required again depending on the state of the birthmark.

  • How Your Period Cycle Can Cause Acne Flare Up

You are not alone out there dealing with this; you’ll find it comforting to know that nearly 50 percent of women in the age group of 20 and 52 get premenstrual acne flare up. It is also common for women over 33 years of age to experience acne flare-ups compared to women younger than that.

What is interesting to note is that most acne flare-ups subside as soon as your periods start.

    It’s all in the hormones

For most the menstrual cycle is between 25 to 28 days, and throughout this cycle the body hormones behave differently leading to changing body chemistry almost daily. So during the first half of your cycle, oestrogen is the dominant hormone which impacts your body differently. Progesterone is the dominant one in the second half of the cycle. Both these dip as you near the actual date of the periods.

In all this, there’s also the male hormone testosterone, which is present in the female body in small doses. This hormone remains constant throughout the cycle, so when you are menstruating testosterone levels are higher than your female hormones oestrogen and progesterone.

    How hormones affect your skin

The hormonal shifts throughout your menstrual cycle play havoc with your skin’s natural oil balance. As the progesterone levels rise in the second half of your cycle, the sebum – skin’s natural lubricant – production increases. This is also the time when skin swells up and the pores get compressed.

If you are prone to dry skin, this is the phase when your skin glows due to minimised pores and layer of sebum on the skin. But those who have acne-prone skin start to get excessively oily skin.

As you near your actual menstruation, the testosterone levels become higher, which further activate the sebaceous glands leading to more sebum production. So as the oil pushes through your pores, it creates a fertile ground for the bacteria P. acnes. These infect the pores and cause inflammations which in turn lead to pustules and acne breakout.

However, this condition soon disappears as your period ends – which is the first week of your cycle. As you enter the second week of your period cycle, the oestrogen levels increase, and your skin starts to clear up. Your skin looks the best during the week two till ovulation, which takes place in the week three of your cycle. It is in this week that your skin goes through maximum transformation as oestrogen drops and progesterone increases. By the time you hit week four, pimples flare up takes place. By the time your bleeding starts, considered the week one of the cycle – you skin starts to get into the reparative mode. Thus the cycle continues.

    Treat your skin right

If you are prone to excessive flare-ups as you near your periods, you have to keep an oil-control face wash handy. You can also use gentle exfoliating face wash to keep your pores clean. Even if your skin feels greasy, do not ditch the moisturiser. Use a gel-based moisturiser to keep your skin hydrated and protected. Use a calming face mask to remove excess sebum and deep cleanse your skin, once a week.

However, if the flare-ups are out of control, the best bet is to see a dermatologist who can help you topical treatments and more professional skin therapies.

  • Understanding Skin Ageing: what happens when skin ages

    Introduction

Our skin is also the first organ to show signs of ailment when anything goes wrong with our body.

You must have noticed how your skin looks pale or unhealthy when you are not feeling well. And, Like everything else, skin is also the first one to show signs of ageing if not taken care. So what happens to it when we say that your skin has started showing signs of age? Let’s find out:

    What Is Skin Ageing?

Skin ageing is the natural process where the skin gradually loses elasticity, hydration, and firmness. It is caused by internal factors such as genetics and hormonal changes, and external triggers like sun exposure, pollution, and lifestyle habits. With age, collagen production declines, fat layers shrink, and skin cells regenerate more slowly.

    Skin’s structure

Skin by and large has six layers but what really matters to us are the three major layers. The top layer, called the epidermis consists of dead cells with some clumped melanin – the pigment that gives your skin some colour and some germinating cells at the base.

  • Getting Healthy Hair @Home

Now, when we say daily care, we definitely do not expect you to apply some form of paste or ointment daily. What we mean by daily care is a few precautions here and there which can affect your hair health significantly.

Sharing a few such generic precautions followed by a few DIY masks which can help you curb your hair fall and get healthy voluminous hair.

Do Not let the dirt build-up
Our routines are hard and we hardly have any time to relax. In such a situation, our hair care usually takes a back seat because even if the hair get oily, we can always go for a hairstyle to cover that up.
Now, this kind of carelessness results in dirt and dust piling up, even more after the oil starts surfacing. The result- dandruff, itching, hair fall and/or other concerns.

The solution- wash your hair at regular intervals so that they remain clean and an important thing to note- do not go out immediately after washing your hair because a good hair wash opens up your pores making it susceptible to environmental infections. The solution- use a conditioner!

    Oil them well
Shampoos, and no matter how mild they are drain your hair of the moisture. It is thus important that you oil at least once a week so that the oil content of your hair is maintained adequately which is essential for shiny looking hair

Use cold or lukewarm water to wash your hair
Do not use warm or hot water on your hair ever because it drains away the moisture content. Cold water or the one at normal room temperature works the best. In case, you prefer slightly warm water then go for lukewarm but never hot.

    Do not comb wet hair
Because, right after a hair wash, your hair retain water droplets and due to that momentary change in their keratin structure, they are usually week and can break off easily from their roots.
Instead, let them dry up a bit and then gently run your comb/brush through them.

    Brush Responsibly
Do not go harsh on those hair knots. It would simply break your hair and give them a dull unkempt look. Instead, go for a smoothener which will oil up the hair knots and open them up with a gentle brush stroke.

Also, make sure your hair touches your scalp and goes down till the very end. This is because this helps in blood circulation and hence improving your hair density and growth. Every once in a while, let your hair down and then comb- this gives your hair a bouncy look and results in a more even distribution of the oil on your scalp thus significantly reducing the oily look.

And now 2 DIYs to help your hair:
    Amla Powder Paste
Mix 2 tbsp of amla powder with 2tbsp of lime juice and mix well. Apply this mix to your scalp and let it dry.
Once dried, wash it off with lukewarm/cold water.

Why this- A natural source of antioxidants and Vitamin C, Amla not just strengthens your hair but also improves its pigmentation i.e. makes your hair colour darker and reduces the chances of graying.

    Coffee Powder Paste
Brew 3-4 tbsp of coffee in one cup of water. Once the solution is ready, let is cool.
Pour it on your scalp and gently massage it.
Once done, wash it off with cold water.

Why this- Coffee is highly potent and hence helps with hair growth as well as regrowth. The mixture stains hair as well and hence, instantly colours the gray hair naturally.

  • The Fat Cell Dilemma

Fat is basically the “thing” stored in the fat cells and the fat cells are the cells whose number in the body varies with every person. But what do fat cells have to do with anyone getting fat. The answer is- everything!

Fat Cells are the cells that store fat in them. A bunch of adipocytes or fat cells together forms the adipose tissue or the fat. The major function of these cells/tissue is to store energy in the form of fat but they are also responsible for insulation and cushioning the body.

Though no concrete evidence has been found on what decides the number of fat cells in a body, yet most researches point that it is a hereditary implication.

Another interesting fact to know is that fat cells do not form throughout a person’s life. Rather by the time one has touched their mid twenties, most of the fat cells have already been formed. Over time, some damage and repair mechanism exists but the number of fat cells remains more or less constant.

Now, the fat cells have infinite capacity to store fat and expand in size so whenever you overeat, you know where the fat goes.

When a person exercises, the fat from the fat cells gets used up to create energy and keep the body functioning well. Now, fat cells produce a hormone called leptin which signals the brain to stop eating.
As the fat in the fat cells dissolves, the fat cells produce lesser and lesser leptin and thus the brain keeps asking for food to replenish the lost fat and hence giving us hunger pangs.

Also, even if the entire fat from the cells gets used up, the cells remain and hence the tendency to get fat. Thus your two questions can be answered as:

Why am I getting fat, how can i reduce it– Because, your body is storing fat. This can be both hormonal or because of your lifestyle. Try keeping a check on your lifestyle by eating healthy and exercising and the results should show. In case they do not, consult a medical practitioner and get your hormonal profiling done.
How should I prevent myself from getting fat again– Remember, you will always get fat if you get back to your pre fat loss lifestyle. So, maintain the discipline. Does that mean you should starve yourself- NO! Include natural fruit juices (not the canned ones) and fibrous food in your diet. Try millet based preparations- this will not just keep your hunger in control giving your brain a pseudo- I am full feeling but also help with digestion.
So, after having read this blog, we hope that you now know that having fat and fat cells in your body is not in your hands, but the size your fat cells can expand to- you definitely have control over it!

    Trivia:
Women and Men when born, have essentially the same fat cell number. It is only after the puberty hits that the fat cell characteristics and distribution starts varying with the gender. While men store fat around their chest, abdomen and buttock giving them an apple shape, women store it in their breasts, waist, hips and buttocks giving a pear shape.

Also, in many cases, men are found to have lesser fat cells than women (a hypothesis which still needs a scientific evidence to back but is supported by observational data)
