  • Hair Transplant- The Common FAQs

However, here are the 6 top-most queries that we receive on a daily basis. Answering them for you at one place itself so that you do not even have to search for Hair Transplant FAQs.

How Does Hair Transplant Really Work?

We have already mentioned what a hair transplant is like in layman terms- transplantation of hair follicles from one site on the scalp to another. To understand the science behind it, let us look at the various techniques through which hair transplant is done:
FUT involves removing a 6 to 10 inch skin strip from the back of the head (harvesting hair follicles from the donor area), dividing it into grafts of either individual hair or a group of hair. In FUE however, the surgeon shaves the back of the head and removes (harvests) the follicles one by one. The procedure of planting the graft is same after this for both the techniques.
Regardless of the harvesting technique (technique for removal of the hair follicles from the donor area) being used for hair transplantation, what matters most is the proper extraction of the hair follicles. Since the hair follicles grow at an angle to the surface, therefore the transplanted tissue must also be removed corresponding to that angle. It is because of this reason that getting the hair transplant done by an expert is of paramount importance for the success of the process.
Though FUE is comparatively expensive and time consuming as compared to FUT yet it is preferred because first, unlike FUT, no stitch mark is left on the scalp as no skin is removed per se. Also, the results obtained are more natural and the postoperative recovery is usually faster.
There is however another new and advanced technique for hair implantation called Direct Hair Transplant. The advantage that this technique has over the other two is that it does not require reception incision or making holes on the receptor surface.

    Is Hair Transplant worth it?
Pretty subjective question considering how you define the worth. If it is worth the money- well totally. At least we can say this with regards to the procedures done at Kosmoderma. A one time investment which brings your hair back and makes you feel good about yourself is worth everything.

Which technique should I go for to get a Hair Transplant?
That depends on your budget and also your inclination towards surgical or non-surgical procedures. If you are open in these aspects, the effectiveness of all the techniques is at par. It is the recovery time that varies.

Is Hair Transplant a permanent Solution?
Yes, it is- to the areas where transplantation has been done. However, if you have a tendency for hair fall, thanks to your genetics, you hair will fall off from different spots on your scalp. But, the spots where the transplants were done- they will remain in tact.
Also, a shock hair fall at the areas where the transplant has been done happens within a month of the procedure. You do not have to worry about it because, first it does not happen to all individuals and second, the hair grow back at those spots.
So, in short- Hair Transplant is a permanent solution to your hair fall troubles.

Do the results of Hair Transplant look normal or do they look like something artificial?
The results i.e. the grown hair are totally normal like the rest of your scalp because they are your natural hair only. It is just the hair follicles which are transplanted and hence the hair that grow from them are as natural as they can be.

Are there any alternatives to Hair Transplant?
You can go for a hair wig or hair patch (a smaller variant of the vig) but they look unnatural and can be easily told from the rest of your hair. However, before you actually consider Hair Transplant, you can actually try treatments such as Growth Factor Therapy, PRP and Low Level Laser Therapy which facilitate hair regrowth.

  • Hair Style and Hair Fall

Unlike a hair pluck which is painful, persistent gentle pulling may go unnoticed until bald spots or alopecia start to appear. Traction alopecia takes place when braids are applied too tightly. The tension on the hair can literally cause the root of the hair to be torn out. After a while the follicle may stop functioning, resulting in no hair growth.

Where there are early signs of traction alopecia it would be advisable to immediately stop braiding. This action alone can often be enough to allow the hair root to recover, a. As this type of hair loss tends to be temporary. Hair growth can reappear in as little as twelve weeks. In cases where the area has been stressed for 3 years or more the damage. Often the only treatment option is a hair transplant but this can be problematic if the hair loss is extensive and has jeopardized donor sites.

How you style your hair, along with the styling tools you use, can cause significant hair damage. This damage can cause your hair to look brittle, frizzy and lackluster or even fall out!

Dermatologists are starting to see more women with traction alopecia in these times when large numbers of women are having hair extensions, wefts, braids and clip-ins. Some women with curly hair turn to braids and weaves, and because these hairstyles can be costly, they wear it for extended periods. Even tight ponytails can produce traction alopecia, which means the new style of the ‘man braid’ and the ‘man bun’ can also have an effect on men’s hairlines.

While hair styling is the most common cause of traction alopecia, it can also follow vigorous combing or brushing, including nit combing after an attack of head lice. Prolonged tension leads to inflammation around the hair follicles that may ultimately produce scarring and lead to hair loss*.

Avoid tight braids and weaves at all cost. The tighter it is plaited, the more damage it causes. So if you like to plait tight remind yourself that you don’t want a face lift and then ease the tension.

However, for most people, a cure is available with their own hair brush. People are often surprisingly resistant to changing their hairstyle. Unfortunately the only measure that halts progression of traction alopecia is redistributing the tension in the hair.

It’s possible that with time, if you stop pulling your hair tight and concentrate on improving the skins elasticity by massaging and promoting blood circulation, that the hair will start to regrow.

  • Hair Fall Myths & Facts

Here are a few common myths that a majority of hair loss sufferers attribute their baldness to-

Myth: Losing hair every day means you’re balding.
Fact: It’s normal to lose as many as 100 hairs a day. But if you are losing more hair than normal then it is advised to consult a dermatologist.

Myth: Smoothening or straightening can cause hair loss.
Fact: Hair care products don’t cause hair loss. However, if you notice that you are losing too much hair, it is better to go slow on such treatments as it can aggravate hair fall.

    Myth: Hats Can Cause Baldness.
Fact: Hats do not cause hair loss in any way or form unless it’s too tight & breaks your hair every time you put it on & take it off.

Myth: Washing your hair too much can cause thinning.
Fact: you’re never too young to start losing your hair. If you’re genetically predisposed, it can hit as early as in your teens. But keep a look out. Hair thinning is chronic and progressive, so the sooner you treat it,the better.

Myth: Smoothening or straightening can cause hair loss.
Fact: There’s no need to fear the shampoo bottle. You’re just cleansing the scalp, and that’s not going to affect the root. As for the strands on the shower floor, they’ve likely come to the end of their natural cycle anyway. So unless you’re breaking strands by raking a comb or brush through wet hair, the washing process is only getting rid of the stuff that’s already come loose from your scalp.

Myth: Birth control / hormones make your hair fall out.
Fact: Unfortunately, this one is half true. Women genetically prone to hair loss have follicles that are more sensitive to androgens, hormones responsible for male traits and reproductive health. So if the type of birth control you’re using is heavy in progesterone, a hormone that easily converts to androgen, it can trigger hair loss. But not all contraceptives have the same chemical makeup. If you have particular concerns about hair thinning, ask for a birth control option whose progestin don’t have potentially loss-triggering androgenic effects.

Myth: You Can Grow Back Dead Follicles.
Fact: Medications or laser therapy, for example, can help hair follicles grow thicker and healthier, but once the follicle is dead and gone, the only option for regrowth is a hair transplant.

Myth: There is nothing you can do to treat or prevent hair loss.
Fact: Not anymore. Science has advanced so much that we no longer have to live with hair loss. While there is no “miracle cure” there are certainly many treatments like government-approved drugs, laser therapy procedures or hair transplants.

At Kosmoderma, our team of specialists takes it to the next level of therapy by offering personalized hair care and treatments based on your genetic profile and hair structure.

  • What diet should be followed to get good and strong Hair?

To keep your hair well hydrated, be sure to drink 6-8 glasses of water every day. Also try to include foods which contain silica such as rice, oats, lettuce, parsnips, asparagus, onion, strawberry, cabbage, cucumber, celery, cauliflower and green leafy vegetables. Silica is vital to the strength of hair, and can stop hair breakage. A lack of vitamin B in the diet can lead to oily greasy hair. To fight greasy hair, be sure to eat lots of whole grains, nuts, seeds, dairy products, eggs, wheat germ, legumes and green leafy vegetables. Although the link between premature graying and diet hasn’t been established, evidence does suggest that the amino acids tyrosine- which acts as a precursor to color producing pigments in the hair and skin- can help!

Thinning hair or hair loss may be a sign of iron deficiency. Be sure to eat plenty of iron rich foods, such as red meat, eggs, legumes, whole grain cereals, dried fruits and green leafy vegetables. Since hair is composed mostly of protein, your hair will most likely respond well to the addition of high protein foods such as meats, eggs, cheese, seeds and nuts. These foods can help reinforce the hair follicles and prevents the hair from falling out.
