  • Stuck in Long Jams- Relax not Fret

    Bust That Stress

We start with stress busting because we know that the stress of being stuck is too much to allow you concentrate on anything else.

Inhale as large as you can to ensure maximum chest and diaphragm expansion. Inhale and exhale such that you can feel your stomach muscles moving.

Repeat the procedure about 10 times.

This entire exercise will put your tummy muscles at work thus, not just toning them but also helping in better metabolism. The constant inhale-exhale will strengthen your lungs too and of course, the additional oxygen will boost your mood.

    Tone Those Abs

When you are seated behind the wheel, or even in the backseat, try getting the left shoulder as close as possible to the right foot and the right shoulder to the left foot. If you face difficulty in this, do not over stretch. Start with first touching the tip of the fingers to the opposite foot and then gradually increase the stretch over time to finally come to bending your shoulder.

Start with 2 sets of 10 and then increase with time.

    Build those Biceps

Put your hands on the steering wheel such that they are at 180 degree to each other and 90 degree to your body- basically, you have to sit straight. Alternatively, if you are sitting in the back seat, place your hands on the seat in front.

Now, while maintaining the same position, try pushing both the hands towards each other to work the chest. Hold in this position for as long as you can. Try doing 2 sets of 20 to begin with.

    Tone up your Neck

The simplest of all, all that needs to be done is, turn your neck to a side, apply pressure with your palm onto your forehead and resist this pressure with your neck. Repeat it for the other side.

Do 2 sets of 10 each for starters and you may then gradually increase on the numbers.

    Strengthen the calf

For those who either travel by public transport or have to wait for cabs. We know how difficult it can be to get the seats. Well, utilise this by moving your legs up and down from the knee and below.

This would not just reduce the fatigue on the leg by facilitating faster blood flow but there is also a probability that the people around you will give you some space to stand (tongue in cheek).

We hope that you will follow this regime and will be able to make up for your lost fitness time.

To know more such stuff, keep waiting and we shall be back with a blog soon!

  • Fruits to keep You hydrated

Now, with so many concerns at hand, why not have a solution that actually works and not just rely on water or fruit nutrient induced water (the fancy bottles where you can put cut fruits and then these fruits gradually dissolve in water).

So, here are the 4 fruits and veggies which will not only keep you hydrated but also provide you with essential nutrients.

    Spinach

We know this one is a shocker but with about 90% water content in addition to being the source of iron, potassium and about 10% of your Vit E requirements and antioxidants to fight free radicals and hence ageing, a cup of raw spinach is sure to keep you going.
Just add three-four leaves to your sandwich or take them with your salad

    Strawberries

With 88% water content and of course the amazing taste, Strawberries are our fruit pick for the blog. You can have them as a snack to satiate those hunger pangs or you can blend them in a smoothie or shake and get the hydration as well as the goodness of milk all in one glass!

The nutrients contained in strawberries include: iron, copper, magnesium, phosphorus, Vitamin B6, Vitamin C, Vitamin E and Vitamin K

    Grapefruit

At 90% water content, grapefruits come next. Always up for a milkshake, grapefruits are better if taken in juice form.
Keep it minus sugar and research has already suggested that taken regularly, grapefruit juice can lower the body’s bad cholesterol and hence reduce the waistline too!
The nutrients contained in grapefruit include Vitamin A, Vitamin B1, Vitamin C, copper, potassium, biotin, dietary fibres and lycopene too which helps fight sun damage by boosting the skin’s immunity.

    Tomato

The ultimate lycopene and antioxidant supplier which is roughly 85% water and helps fight not just the signs of ageing but also the regular sun damage, tomato is the final pick for this coveted list.

In addition to what we already mentioned, tomatoes are also rich source of Vitamin E , Thiamin, Niacin,Vitamin B6, Folate, Magnesium, Phosphorus and Copper, and a very good source of Dietary Fiber, Vitamin A, Vitamin C, Vitamin K, Potassium and Manganese.

Will be back with a blog next week!

  • Chin Up: Bye Bye to the Double Chin

Surgery is indeed an almost permanent option and we know from our experience with several patients at Kosmoderma that there is hardly any downtime but, we still prefer that you should try exercising first. These exercises may not have drastic effects but the fact that the results would be significant enough has a high probability.

    Tongue Press

    1. Sit with your back straightened up and tilt your head such that you face the ceiling now.
    2. Press your tongue against the roof of your mouth
    3. Maintain this position for about 10 seconds
    4. Now, while holding your tongue in the same position, lower your chin to touch the chest as far as possible
    5. Hold for 10 seconds again
    6. Repeat this procedure in two sets of 10 each

PS: Your stamina will build over time, do not stretch too much in the first time and end up with the neck pain.

    Chin Rotation

    • Sit or stand with your back straight
    • Rotate your chin anti-clockwise starting from your shoulder
    • Make 5 such neck rotations to begin with
    • Make sure your shoulders stay stationary and down while you rotate your neck.

    Tongue Stretch

    • Relax yourself and open your mouth as wide as you can.
    • Stick your tongue out as far as you can till you feel your chin and neck tighten.
    • While you hold your tongue out, count till 10 and then release
    • Repeat this procedure 10 times

Take a side profile image before you start your regular exercise. Take another side profile picture after 15 days and see the difference for yourself.

  • Fit at Fifty!

We will first read about the physical routine and then will go to the star attraction of the blog- How to cheat your hormones into helping you lose weight.

So yeah, about the fitness routine:

    1. Get on to the weight training routine, even if you don’t want to hit the gym, do it at home but do it. The logic is simple- your muscle mass has reduced, hence your metabolism has slowed down and you need to build those muscles back to get the things on track. You can start with donkey kicks, standing hip extensions and side lying leg raises and then graduate to glute bridges and crunches
    2. Considering that your joints would have also started weakening, try doing exercises in water, Get the best spin bike for home workout as it helps you burn calories and doesnt impact your joints. The result would be 30% faster and with lesser strain applied. In case you don’t have access to a pool, well turn back to point one above
    3. And well, you should visit your physician first before embarking on your fitness regime. At an age so tender, even a tiny bit of injury can spell disaster and so it is best to keep your enthusiasm in check

This was a pretty short one because it is always better to focus on the stars and so here we go but before that let us introduce you to our friend Ghrelin here. Ghrelin dear people is the hormone responsible for that hungry feeling that you have! It is more of a survival hormone which spikes up due to lifestyle related changes such as delayed or skipped meals, irregular sleep, excessive exercise, avoiding carbs and fats or the simple act of losing weight.

To keep Mr. Ghrelin in check and hence lose weight, here is what needs to be done:

    1. Eat your breakfast within an hour of waking up.
    2. Check on your average waking hours and divide them by four. The number you get is the number of meals you need in a day.
    3. Carbohydrates and protein mix is a must you should remember and include in every diet be it a meal or snack. Thus, you will have the right things to curb those cravings, control your hunger and hence lose weight while gaining energy and stimulating fitness on the go. Just for your information: Protein increases metabolism while carbohydrates lower ghrelin thus helping in decreasing cravings (PS: contrary to the common belief that carbs cause one to fatten up and hence their intake should be minimum, studies have proved that a definitive amount of carbohydrates in the diet help in weight loss)
    4. Follow the 70/30 rule, which means that 70 percent of the calories should be taken before the dinnertime and remaining 30 percent at dinner. Also, make sure that your dinner is at least 90 minutes before your sleeping time giving your system enough time to digest.
    5. Stay hydrated- drink well and drink fine. As cliched as it maybe, drinking water seems to be the solution to most of the problems

So, dear people, that was it! That was your way to be fit and not fat irrespective of what milestones of your age you are touching.

    Happy Living!

  • The Feet’s Monologue

Anyway, we think that maybe we only should tell you what we want. Please take a note of that. And if you pay no heed to it, be ready for some serious foot related issues with fungus, skin cracks, bad smells, infections and what not.

So here is what you need to do for us:

    • Soak us in warm water (not hot) for about 15 to 20 minutes. And instead of using Epsom salts which make us dry like anything, go for a mild body wash. You can also have a tbsp full of table salt in lukewarm water & we would enjoy the spa like treatment to our muscles. We would prefer this care regimen at least once a week and twice a week would be more than enough
    • When you finally decide to scrape that hard dead skin off, do not abrade us with anything you find. Use a good quality pumice stone and you can use it say once a week also because we love that gentle rubbing
    • When out of the bath, we appreciate being softly cuddled to dryness with a soft towel. Especially between the fingers because any moisture left there will spell problem.
    • Now, comes the moisturizing and please, unless your podiatrist has specifically mentioned, avoid putting anything between the fingers. It doesn’t dry easily and when you wear your shoes or socks above that- the same smelly fungal trouble is there again.
    • Now for the shoe part- can you please have 2 or 3 favorites for the week? Please, it is not so good wearing the same thing over and over again. And we say this because first, we need to shift shapes from tight fits to heels to flats and whatnots. And this is important for our muscles plus it will also make you look like someone who knows the vogue! A particularly shaped shoe every day & the pressure on certain points becomes constant which can result in muscular or bone issues later.
    • Also, we know that we can force our way out and make the shoe adjust to your command, but please understand that this unnecessary pressure of uncomfortable shoes does a lot of harm to us. That pressure that gets built up leads to excessive pain and even you know it!

Lastly, please understand that we are your part too! We have a lot of responsibility on ourselves, we have to carry you around. Treat us well. Because once we get into trouble, it usually lasts long and almost makes you immobile, or a public embarrassment. You wouldn’t want that!

  • Quit Smoking before its too late!

Pale Appearance / Uneven Skin tone:
Smoking chronically deprives the skin of oxygen and nutrients. So some smokers appear pale and develop uneven coloring.

    Premature Aging & Sagging:
There are more than 4,000 chemicals in tobacco smoke, and many of them trigger the destruction of collagen and elastin. These are the fibers that give your skin its strength and elasticity. The nicotine in cigarettes causes narrowing of the blood vessels in the outermost layers of your skin. This impairs blood flow to your skin. With less blood flow, your skin doesn’t get as much oxygen and important nutrients, such as vitamin A. As a result, skin begins to sag and wrinkle prematurely because of smoking.

    Effect on Body:
Smoking not only damage the appearance of your face, but it may also take a toll on your figure. As skin loses its elasticity, parts that were once firm may begin to droop. This includes the inner arms and breasts.

    Deep Lines around Lips:
Smokers use certain muscles around their lips that cause them to have dynamic wrinkles. The loss of elasticity and the wrinkles, together can lead to deep lines around the lips.

    Age Spots:
Age spots are dark patches that develop on the face and hands. While anyone can develop these spots from spending too much time in the sun, research suggests smokers are more susceptible to these.

    Development of Psoriasis:
Recent studies suggest smokers have a greater risk of developing psoriasis. Psoriasis is a chronic condition that most often causes thick, scaly patches on the skin – usually on the knees, elbows, scalp, hands, feet, or back. The patches may be white, red, or silver.

    Crows Feet around Eyes:
Chemicals from inhaled tobacco cause internal damage to the skin structures and blood vessels around your eyes. Heat from burning cigarettes and squinting to keep smoke out of your eyes contribute to visible crow’s feet.

Increases Hair Fall / Gray Hair:
Both men and women tend to develop thinner hair as they age, but smoking can accelerate this process. Smoking negatively affects your circulation in general which means impaired blood flow to your hair follicles. Also, smokers are 4 times more likely to have gray hair than nonsmokers as smoke causes free-radical damage which destroys the little color sacs in each hair follicle.

Smoking can affect parts of your body that can make you look ugly!

People who smoke tend to develop gum disease, persistent bad breath, and other oral hygiene problems. Think your hand looks sexy with a cigarette perched between your fingers? If you’ve been smoking for a while, take a good look at your fingernails and the skin of your hands. Tobacco can actually stain the skin and nails, as well as the teeth. The good news is these stains tend to fade when you quit smoking.

Why should you quit smoking NOW?

Quitting smoking can help you look more vibrant and healthy – which is exactly how you’ll feel, too. Quitting smoking can improve your appearance. As blood flow gets better, your skin receives more oxygen and nutrients. This can help you develop a healthier complexion. If you stay tobacco-free, the stains on your fingers and nails will disappear. You may even notice your teeth getting whiter.

Even your hair will show more shine and luster, and possibly stay in place longer, when you finally get around to quitting smoking.

Reward yourself with a couple of skin treatments. Laser skin resurfacing and chemical peels remove outer layers of skin, where the damage is most visible. When you see the benefits of better-looking skin, you may be motivated to stay nicotine-free forever.

  • Do not Pause @ Menopause

Only one word comes to mind when we talk about Hot flashes, Weight gain, Forgetfulness, Irritability … ‘Menopause’!

During menopause, estrogen decreases. This affects your menstrual cycle, sexual arousal, appetite, mood swings and also the skin & hair. Women seldom talk about changes in skin & hair during menopause as these are the least of their concerns at that time. But the problem is, if you don’t pay immediate attention, these concerns will last forever.

Going through menopause can be an emotional experience. You struggle to get comfortable not only with what’s going on within you, but with the outside too. Be kind and gentle to yourself and remember that what you are experiencing is unique to you and nobody can totally understand what’s going on.

Following tips may help you better understand what you can do about the changes on your skin & hair that come with menopause.

    Your Skin During Menopause
No matter what you do, you will age. How gracefully you age makes all the difference. As we age, the skin will naturally show an impact, but menopause can accelerate that process and create new issues you may have never had to deal with before.

    Dryness / Dullness
Estrogen partially controls the growth & maintenance of blood capillaries under your skin’s surface to bring oxygen and nutrients to the top that help strengthen the barrier function of the skin. During menopause, blood flow to the skin is often reduced, contributing to increased water loss through the dermal layer. This leads to: chapped, flaky, scaly dry skin.

What can be done? Avoid long, steamy showers and use a facial moisturizer or oil with hydrating ingredients, such as Shea butter, coconut or jojoba oil and hyaluronic acid.

    Oily Skin
Due to increased levels of testosterone, the sebaceous glands in the skin secrete thicker sebum, causing an oilier appearance and in some cases leading to acne.

What can be done? Try a gentle cleanser, avoid over-washing and consider applying a clay mask to especially oily areas.

    Acne
If you experienced acne during teenage, you’re likely to have a recurrence during menopause. This is because of the imbalance of estrogen and testosterone. Breakouts are common on the chin and neck.

What can be done? Look for cleansers and spot treatments containing either salicylic acid or benzoyl peroxide. Salicylic acid helps unclog pores and keep them clear where as benzoyl peroxide helps dry up excess oil.

    Facial Hair
The imbalance in the level between androgen and estrogen can lead to excessive hair growth called hirsutism. You may notice unwanted hair especially on face, chin and neck area.

What can be done? Tweezing, waxing, threading can help you get rid of unwanted facial hair. Other hair removal techniques like laser hair reduction may get rid of unwanted hair.

    Wrinkles and loose skin:
Collagen and elastin that help keep your skin firm, smooth and plump, naturally diminish with age. However, during menopause, decreasing estrogen levels can speed up the aging process and thereby sagging skin and fine lines and wrinkles.

What can be done? Try at night, derivatives of vitamin A that can trigger new collagen production and gradually help smooth out fine lines and wrinkles.

    Sun Damage
Estrogen regulates the maintenance of melanocytes in the skin. As menopause progresses, your natural protection from UVA and UVB rays degenerate, making skin more prone to sun damage.

What can be done? By now, you might be applying your sunscreen regularly, but during menopause, go for a higher SPF e.g. SPF 50 filters up to 98 percent of the sun’s rays

    Your Hair During Menopause
Menopause can change the texture and thickness of your hair in a dramatic manner.

Here’s what may happen and what you can do to minimize symptoms:

    Thinning and Hairloss
Most women experience thinning and hair loss during menopause as estrogen and progesterone production declines.

What can be done? Use gentle products and avoid using heated tools. Try oil massage to increase blood circulation.

    Dry Scalp
As your skin loses moisture due to hormonal shift, your scalp and hair may also become dry and brittle.

What can be done? If you have dandruff, use a shampoo that contains zinc or selenium. For dry & brittle hair, try a deep conditioner to soften locks, and limit the amount of heat styling you do. Put dryers and curling and straightening irons aside for the time being.

Your skin and hair may look their best during menopause with just a few lifestyle changes:

    Quit smoking.
Smoking reduces estrogen levels in a woman’s body. It also contributes to fine lines and wrinkles, especially around lips & eyes. Now is the best time to say goodbye to smoking. This will not only will benefit your looks but also your overall health.

    Manage stress.
Stress can lower your body’s levels of estrogen contributing to the hormonal imbalance that causes these skin and hair issues. Change your environment to reduce stress, relax when you’re under pressure, and cope when there’s nothing you can do about the situation.

    Watch your diet.
Make sure you’re drinking plenty of water. Eat healthy fats in foods rich in omega-3 fatty acids . A healthy diet will help boost your skin’s protective barrier, preventing dehydration.

Of course, see a professional doctor if any of the changes you’re experiencing are extreme.

  • WARNING: Exercise has been known to cause “Good Health and Happiness”

    RADIANT SKIN

When you get your heart really pumping, the blood vessels that lie close to the skin surface dilate and the living layers of your skin receive a nice delivery of oxygenated blood and nutrients. This gives the skin a healthy, vibrant appearance and that glow is maintained for hours after a workout.

    ACNE RELIEF

Regular exercise boosts circulation. Blood and oxygen flowing through the skin help draw toxins out of the body, including toxins that clog pores. Also sweating helps propel those toxins, oils and dirt out of your pores.
Working out corrects the hormonal imbalance that can cause adult acne as exercise produces endorphins and helps reduce your stress levels. Stress reduction and endorphins help decrease cortisol and other acne-provoking hormones.

    LESS WRINKLES

Did you know that too much stress related hormone cortisol will increase collagen breakdown? This can increase wrinkles and sagging. Working out also helps maintain healthy levels of cortisol and support the production of collagen, that helps to keep your skin firm, supple, and elastic.

    HEALTHY HAIR

The improved blood flow helps keep your hair stronger and healthier. This blood, full of nutrients, stimulates the hair follicles and promotes growth. Exercise is also a big stress reliever. Lower stress means your hair is less likely to be brittle and, worse, fall out.

    TONE THE MUSCLES

When our bodies are toned our skin takes on a more toned appearance and we have the healthier and more youthful look.

    SKIN REPAIR

Exercise also helps you rest and sleep better. Your body and skin need repair time and does it best when you’re sleeping well. Research has also suggested that regular physical activity can help your skin repair itself faster.

Apart from knowing about the positive effects that exercise can have on your skin there are a few cautions to consider

    • If you are exercising outdoors remember to protect your skin from the damaging sunrays by applying your sunscreen before you get started.
    • Keep your exposed skin as covered as possible; avoid working out during peak sun times, which is usually between 11 a.m. and 3 p.m.
    • Tight fitting exercise clothing coupled with sweating can lead to skin irritations. Avoid clothing that is too tight and apply a moisturizer or powder to the areas that are most prone to irritation.
    • If swimming is your exercise of choice, be sure to rinse off as soon as possible. Chlorinated pools and salt water can both be dehydrating to the skin and the hair.
    • After exercise shower as soon as possible. Make sure that you’re cleansing your face and other areas that generally breakout .
    • Avoid exercising with makeup on your face.

You may not always love the workout, but you will definitely love the results. Exercise is stress management, better sleep and healthy body. And these all add up to a more radiant and gorgeous you.So take care of your body, it is the only place you have to live in.

  • Are you getting enough ‘BEAUTY’ Sleep?

Circadian Rhythm: Skin & the Body’s Internal Clock

One of the most common pieces of advice passed on generation by generation would be about the importance of a good night’s sleep. A lot of wisdom has been shared on this issue with medical and scientific correlation.

Sleep helps the body move into hibernation mode, thus helping with regeneration and repair of the damage which may have been caused by various processes during the day. A bad night’s sleep reflects in the mirror the next morning, showing up as dark circles, acne breakouts, and dull, sallow and lifeless skin. Any sleep deprived individual would agree with this. Even in the case of a jet lag, the similarity is observed.

Often referred to as the “body clock”, the circadian rhythm is a 24-hour cycle that tells our bodies when to sleep and regulates many other physiological processes. This internal body clock is affected by environmental cues, like sunlight and temperature. It plays a crucial role in making your skin healthier and more resilient and delaying the signs of aging.

How does Circadian rhythm help, and how does disturbance in the cycle cause harm?
    • Circadian rhythm protects and nurtures stem cell differentiation, which helps in regeneration, repair and maintenance of healthy skin, by regulating cell cycle turnovers at appropriate timings and surroundings.
    • It works on a mechanism whereby an out of sync circadian clock can contribute to accelerated skin aging and skin damage and other visible cosmetic concerns.
    • Disturbance can cause tumors/cancers, many studies still in progress on this thought.
    What to do?
    • If you experience inadequate sleep once in a while, your skin won’t be as stressed as it would be from chronic circadian rhythm disruptions, just try to get back on schedule and routine as soon as you can.
    • Use products that help your skin’s circadian rhythm function in a healthy way. This is especially important as you age, since the circadian function actually dies down as the years pass. At night, use a retinol or retinoid based prescription cream to stimulate skin cell turnover in addition to natural processes. This will help your skin cells produce healthy collagen and elastin and keep your skin smooth and wrinkle-free for a time*.
    • Certain topical medications are absorbed better in the evening, when moisture is greatest in the stratum corneum, the outermost layer of skin, and possibly lead to improved timing for cosmetic products. The night is also the perfect time to treat skin to an intense dose of hydration, since sebum production or your skin’s natural oil is lowest while you’re asleep, with powerful humectants like hyaluronic acid, which attract and bind moisture.
    • During the day, protect your skin with a broad-spectrum sunscreen that contains additional antioxidants.Sunscreen is necessary even when you’re in a shade or taking a quick walk down the block or sitting insideyour house with a lot of natural daylight. Oral sunscreen works the best with skin highly susceptible to skin damage; it boosts internal antioxidants and provides protective immunity. It helps protect your skin againstboth the development of skin cancer and skin cell breakdown from sun exposure, which leads to increased skin laxity, sunspots and the development of fine lines and wrinkles.
    • Avoid caffeine within 6 – 8 hours of bedtime. Avoid alcohol too. While alcohol may help one to fall asleep initially, it generally causes the restorative quality of sleep to suffer. Caffeine & alcohol dehydrate the skin as well. Your sleeping patterns have a direct impact on your skin and hair.

It is important to keep a regular sleep schedule and allow plenty of time for quality sleep to look and feel your best. Always discuss any sleep problems you may have with a doctor. He or she can help find the source of your problem and the best way to treat it.
