  • Stuck in Long Jams- Relax not Fret

    Bust That Stress

    We start with stress busting because we know that the stress of being stuck is too much to allow you concentrate on anything else.

    Inhale as large as you can to ensure maximum chest and diaphragm expansion. Inhale and exhale such that you can feel your stomach muscles moving.

    Repeat the procedure about 10 times.

    This entire exercise will put your tummy muscles at work thus, not just toning them but also helping in better metabolism. The constant inhale-exhale will strengthen your lungs too and of course, the additional oxygen will boost your mood.

    Tone Those Abs

    When you are seated behind the wheel, or even in the backseat, try getting the left shoulder as close as possible to the right foot and the right shoulder to the left foot. If you face difficulty in this, do not over stretch. Start with first touching the tip of the fingers to the opposite foot and then gradually increase the stretch over time to finally come to bending your shoulder.

    Start with 2 sets of 10 and then increase with time.

    Build those Biceps

    Put your hands on the steering wheel such that they are at 180 degree to each other and 90 degree to your body- basically, you have to sit straight. Alternatively, if you are sitting in the back seat, place your hands on the seat in front.

    Now, while maintaining the same position, try pushing both the hands towards each other to work the chest. Hold in this position for as long as you can. Try doing 2 sets of 20 to begin with.

    Tone up your Neck

    The simplest of all, all that needs to be done is, turn your neck to a side, apply pressure with your palm onto your forehead and resist this pressure with your neck. Repeat it for the other side.

    Do 2 sets of 10 each for starters and you may then gradually increase on the numbers.

    Strengthen the calf

    For those who either travel by public transport or have to wait for cabs. We know how difficult it can be to get the seats. Well, utilise this by moving your legs up and down from the knee and below.

    This would not just reduce the fatigue on the leg by facilitating faster blood flow but there is also a probability that the people around you will give you some space to stand (tongue in cheek).

    So, here we are telling you about what you need to do to detoxify your skin and body after a fun-filled time of festivities:

    Let us start with the Skin First!

    The Skin- Easier Done than Said!

    1. No heavy make-ups because first, you wouldn’t need them and second it is important to let the skin breathe
    2. Go for a simple clean-up or maybe a head and shoulder massage. This because a soothened up head and shoulders will take your tiredness away and put the glow back on the face
    3. Massage almond oil into your facial skin daily at night before sleeping. A gentle massaging with the tip of your fingers will be enough to replenish the lost suppleness
    4. The weekend immediately after your last party- stay insides and relax.

    None of it is too much to do. All of the above are just letting your skin know that it can relax again and once it gets relaxed, the healing will happen on its own!

    The Body- Now this will need some work!

    Hot water and lemon in the morning- the first thing you do after you wake up is given but there are a few other things too.

    1. Soak your feet in slightly hot water with salt dissolved in it. Do it twice in a week for one week (say Tuesday and Friday). It soothes up your legs and feet well. Important thing is that you need to soak up to your knees.
    2. Incorporate beans and chilli in your diet. The chilly will burn the fat that you accumulated faster than it would have been normally and the beans will provide enough protein and fibre for an effective digestion.
    3. Say no to tea and coffee and incorporate Buttermilk in your diet. Go for chilled buttermilk to keep your insides cool.
    4. You can also take probiotic drinks to further fasten up your metabolism in case you have a slow one.
    5. Get enough sleep- actually give yourself a bonus of 2 hours extra and be a bit lazy for a week. Your body will get enough hints to know that it is back to the relaxed mode again
    6. And for the exercise part- well you just need to take stairs and walk as much as you can!

    First, ensure that your hair are not wet when you come to office. Wet hair signify that you are not taking your life seriously and you cannot manage time well- something you would not want anyone to think.

    The Dhoti-Kurta-Jacket Ensemble

    Dhoti Kurtas have always added to the glamour quotient and now when we have become so health conscious over time, the physiques that we have built over time- the dhoti kurta just adds to the awesomeness that we are.

    But, don’t play it dull with beige and cream shades. This season, revel in the colors of happiness and go bright like the fella in the image below.

  • The Potato Wonders

    We start with the health benefits that potatoes have for us:

    1. The first is helping in controlling blood pressure. With its high potassium content, it helps in more salt and water excretion thus maintaining a lower blood pressure. An average baked potato a day taken twice daily is good for having a balanced diet
    2. potatoes contain alpha lipoic acid and Vitamin C- a coenzyme and vitamin combination which is proven to be useful in treating depression and improving mental health.
    3. The magnesium and potassium content in the potatoes is known to prevent bone density loss, a utility which is specially important for the adults after the age of 35.
    4. And the last but definitely not the least important, the fibre content in potatoes helps in improving the digestion.

    This was about the health in general but considering our expertise which lies in Skin care, here is what potatoes do for our skin:

    Wrinkles:

    Potatoes are natural astringents. With Vitamin C and other collagen boosters in them, potatoes tend to reduce the wrinkles on the skin. Though a very drastic result should not be expected but if you have had a treatment and are looking for post care or your first wrinkles have just started showing up, a potato paste will help. Here is what needs to be done:

    1. Slightly soften (by boiling) and mash the potatoes in a thick paste
    2. Apply this paste on the areas where you are experiencing the fine line.
    3. Leave it for 20 minutes and then wash with cold water
    4. Moisturise well because potatoes tend to leave the skin dry

    Dark Circles:

    Dark circle reduction is a joint result of the presence of magnesium and catecholase enzyme in potatoes. While magnesium fights the free radicals which cause skin damage and darkening over time, catecholase enzyme is a natural skin whitening agent. To benefit from these two constituents of our friend potato, this is what needs to be done:

    1. Grate a potato and squeeze the juice out of it
    2. Use a cotton ball, gently dab it into the juice and keep applying it on the dark circles for about 15 minutes
    3. Let the juice dry for some 10 minutes now and wash it off with cold water

    Sunburn Treatment:

    The reason behind lies in the presence of calcium, Vitamin C and bleaching properties which help in temporary melanin reduction. What needs to be done is simple:

    1. Blend a potato with curd. Curd in specific because it helps the skin to cool off
    2. Apply the paste on the affected area and wait for 15-20 minutes
    3. Wash it off with cold water. Can apply ice cubes for better results after cleaning the paste off
    4. Moisturise well

    Skin Lightening:

    As mentioned before, potatoes have natural bleaching properties and helps in reduction of melanin production. For skin lightening purpose specifically, this is what needs to be done:

    1. Grate one potato and squeeze the juice out of it
    2. Mix it well with juice from half a lemon and apply it on your face
    3. Keep dabbing your skin with this juice for 10 minutes and then let it dry
    4. Once cried, wash it off with cold water and moisturise

    So, a single potato and so many uses to put it too! Shouldn’t we all love it then, after all it is more than just a potato for you!

  • God Made Men, Tailor Made Gentlemen

    For Those on the Heavier Side

    The entire struggle to wear something so that your paunch doesn’t show, fighting it out in the trial room because the shirt you liked isn’t fitting or is making you look even bigger than what you are, well the solution is always there.

    All you need to do is:

    • Say NO to Horizontal Stripes: The logic is that horizontal stripes add to the width and since you already have enough, why not just slim up a bit. Go for Vertical stripes instead which add length and hence create the optical illusion that your weight is evenly distributed along the length.
    • Wear the Correct Size: That loose clothes will make you look slim is a myth you need to bust right away. We don’t say that you should wear something that shows your “curves” but if you are a size 48, go no more than 50.
    • Color: The lighter shades are not for you people, well actually if you ask us, the lighter shades are not for most and it is perfectly fine because more often than not they make us look dull and show our body contours which unless of course you are a gym freak, who would want that! Cutting it short, go for darker shades because since they are dark, they hide things!

    For Tall and Slim Body Types

    Since you are tall, you have an advantage but your slim needs some caution to handle as it can be of a great disadvantage. For example, if you wear slim fit jeans, you might end up looking like Mr. Matchstick legs which we are sure you would not want.

    • Wearing Light Colors: Lights work for you but not the dull ones, go for brights actually, like the bright yellows and reds they have at Woodland, and not the matte colors or as we call them pastels.
    • No Monochromes: You wouldn’t want to be a two color combo at all because that might make you look like a hanger. Since bottoms don’t offer many color combinations in the purview of “looking smart”, go for patterned t-shirts. And just to clarify, by patterned we meant dual colored t-shirts or striped shirts with a different color bottom and not a multi- colored t-shirt/shirt with any bottom.
    • Horizontal Stripes: They create the illusion of width and considering that your frame is lean, horizontal stripes would add width to it making you appear broad.
    • For the Bottoms: The example for this has been given in the introduction only. Say a strict NO to slim fits and go for medium or loose fits so that your legs do not look slender. The length- you already have enough, the girth, you will have if you wear it Loose.

    For Shorter Body Types

    Now here is some area of concern cause your height can be of slight disadvantage and so we will address the Short and Slim, and the Short and Chubby body types separately.

    For Short and Slim ones

    • Well you still have the slim going for you and thus, all you need to do is avoid baggies i.e. extra large clothes because they will make you look really short.
    • Wear Vertical stripes (obviously) and avoid wearing tight fits.
    • Do not tuck in your shirts and t-shirts when wearing casuals because tucking in makes the dress fit to your shape.
    • For bottoms, wear medium fit. No Skinny and No loose fits.
    • Coming to the footwear, Crakows (The ones with additional tips) or Derbys are a strict No for you. They will put your entire body proportion off balance. Instead, go for your usual oxfords or flat tops

    For Short and Chubby!

    Well, like we said, there is a solution for everything and the same applies to you too. All you need to do is hit the gym and try to shed that weight and while in the process, wear like this:

    • Go vertical: It is a pretty obvious choice to go for vertical stripes considering that there is some weight to hide. Like was mentioned earlier, vertical makes you look slim as it gives the effect that your weight is spread along the length.
    • Dark colors should be preferred since they are better at hiding the body contours as compared to the lighter shades.
    • Medium fits for bottoms, actually, it should be between tight and medium fit so neither tight and nor medium
    • If you must wear a tie to work, opt for the slimmer ones (as opposed to the wider ties).

    This too will help create the illusion of height.

  • The Feet’s Monologue

    Anyway, we think that maybe we only should tell you what we want. Please take a note of that. And if you pay no heed to it, be ready for some serious foot related issues with fungus, skin cracks, bad smells, infections and what not.

    So here is what you need to do for us:

    • Soak us in warm water (not hot) for about 15 to 20 minutes. And instead of using Epsom salts which make us dry like anything, go for a mild body wash. You can also have a tbsp full of table salt in lukewarm water & we would enjoy the spa like treatment to our muscles. We would prefer this care regimen at least once a week and twice a week would be more than enough
    • When you finally decide to scrape that hard dead skin off, do not abrade us with anything you find. Use a good quality pumice stone and you can use it say once a week also because we love that gentle rubbing
    • When out of the bath, we appreciate being softly cuddled to dryness with a soft towel. Especially between the fingers because any moisture left there will spell problem.
    • Now, comes the moisturizing and please, unless your podiatrist has specifically mentioned, avoid putting anything between the fingers. It doesn’t dry easily and when you wear your shoes or socks above that- the same smelly fungal trouble is there again.
    • Now for the shoe part- can you please have 2 or 3 favorites for the week? Please, it is not so good wearing the same thing over and over again. And we say this because first, we need to shift shapes from tight fits to heels to flats and whatnots. And this is important for our muscles plus it will also make you look like someone who knows the vogue! A particularly shaped shoe every day & the pressure on certain points becomes constant which can result in muscular or bone issues later.
    • Also, we know that we can force our way out and make the shoe adjust to your command, but please understand that this unnecessary pressure of uncomfortable shoes does a lot of harm to us. That pressure that gets built up leads to excessive pain and even you know it!

    Lastly, please understand that we are your part too! We have a lot of responsibility on ourselves, we have to carry you around. Treat us well. Because once we get into trouble, it usually lasts long and almost makes you immobile, or a public embarrassment. You wouldn’t want that!

    Daytime Fatigue

    It’s not just long working hours, uncertain schedule and lack of rest that causes fatigue. Lack of water is the number one cause of daytime fatigue. If at all you feel thirsty, it means that you are already dehydrated! Air conditioned environment worsens the condition. Skin is intricately tied to the overall health of your body. When your body is properly hydrated, you’ll look better and feel better. Water gives you a radiant complexion and in addition, bloating and puffiness often disappears. So drink enough water and keep going.

    Premature Ageing

    Almost 80% of skin ageing is caused due to harmful UV rays. Doesn’t matter if you are indoors most of the time, the UV rays are still damaging your skin. Sunscreen is one of the keys to radiant, youthful-looking skin. Freckles, age spots, spider veins on the face, rough and leathery skin, wrinkles, loose & dull skin, a blotchy complexion and skin cancer can all be traced to sun exposure. You should apply your sunscreen 15 to 30 minutes before you are going to be exposed to the sun and reapply it every 2 to 3 hours.

    So in a nutshell, follow these tips and change your corporate lifestyle-

    • Dark Circles is genetic, but long hours in front of the laptop can add to puffiness and dark circles. Take frequent breaks. Look away from the screen to a distant sight.
    • Get up and take a short walk.
    • Stretch your neck by looking up at the ceiling and holding for at least 20 seconds. Look left and right to stretch your neck.
    • Adjust your working space so you’re not always looking down at the screen.
    • Place a mirror by your computer screen so you can see if you’re frowning or squinting. (Ignore comments about your vanity).
    • Purchase an antiglare screen that fits over the computer monitor to cut down on radiation exposure and the glare of blue light.
    • Maintain a good distance from the monitor and clean it regularly (to remove dust).
    • Consider applying moisturiser or a hydrating mist periodically through a long day. At the very least, wear a long-lasting moisturiser

    A little maintenance goes a long way. See a dermatologist if you are facing any skin or hair related issues that are persistent. Most issues are easier to treat in the beginning than at a later stage.

  • Quit Smoking before its too late!

    Pale Appearance / Uneven Skin tone:
    Smoking chronically deprives the skin of oxygen and nutrients. So some smokers appear pale and develop uneven coloring.

    Smokers use certain muscles around their lips that cause them to have dynamic wrinkles. The loss of elasticity and the wrinkles, together can lead to deep lines around the lips.

    Age Spots:
    Age spots are dark patches that develop on the face and hands. While anyone can develop these spots from spending too much time in the sun, research suggests smokers are more susceptible to these.

    Development of Psoriasis:
    Recent studies suggest smokers have a greater risk of developing psoriasis. Psoriasis is a chronic condition that most often causes thick, scaly patches on the skin – usually on the knees, elbows, scalp, hands, feet, or back. The patches may be white, red, or silver.
