  • Sun damage levels- In what forms does sun damage show

When we talk of sun damage, we usually think about sun-tan and darkening of the skin tone. A step further and we think of freckles, pigmentation and dark spots and that is usually the end for us.
But, contrary to the usual belief, sun damage can be as severe as causing permanent damage to the skin and in some cases triggering cancer too.

Here are some of the commonest severe damages that Sun exposure can cause

    Solar lentigines

These are flat spots caused due to increased pigmentation at localised spots. Usually brown, black or gray in colour, they vary in size depending upon the damage done with the size and damage being in proportion. Lentigines appear on the areas which face maximum sun exposure and are usually found on the hands and upper back. Lentigines develop over a period of continuous exposure and are more common in adults as compared to teenagers.

    Solar elastosis

This is a permanent condition caused by breaking down of the collagen and elastin fibres in the skin’s connective tissues. This breakdown is a consequence of excessive exposure to the UV rays. The result is the loss of skin strength and flexibility which appears as creases, wrinkles and skin sags

    Lentigo maligna

It is a type of growth which develops on the face, hands or legs i.e. the area prone to maximum sun exposure. It is usually a dark flat spot which grows in perimeter over time. This condition is most prone to developing into a melanoma over time.

Hence, if you experience any mole/dark spot which you feel is growing in size over time, it is important that you visit a doctor and have it checked.

    Labial lentigo

This form of damage affects the lips only. Labial Lentigo appears as a dark brown lesion on the lips- in most cases it is the lower lip that gets affected.

    Poikiloderma

Poikiloderma is the condition whereby reddish brown pigments appear across the skin. This condition affects mostly the neck and chest.

    Melasma

Melasma is a dark brown layer that forms on the skin. It is caused not just because of the sun rays but because of a combination of sun damage and hormonal imbalance. It most commonly affects the pregnant ladies due to surge in estrogen levels but has also been found to affect several women post their menopause.

    Actinic keratoses

This appears as rough, scaly patches on the skin. Their colour can be white, light brown, dark brown, gray or pink depending upon the skin colour of the person concerned. These patches are most commonly affect the face, ears, lower arms and lower legs- basically the areas which are more prone to accidental and constant sun exposure.

This was all that we had on Sun damage types. Should you wish to know more about the treatments, we are always a call or message away

  • Stretch Marks-The Cause and Prevention

Almost all of us have stretch marks, it would be actually difficult to find someone who doesn’t have stretch marks but is weight or rather fat deposit fluctuation the only reason for getting stretch marks?
Also, is it possible to get rid of stretch marks totally?
Does butter bath work for stretch marks prevention during pregnancy?
Can a good diet and skin maintenance help in stretch marks prevention?
How effective is Laser treatment for stretch marks removal?
Can one get rid of stretch marks forever?

All these and many more, this blog aims at answering most of the doubts that people have about stretch marks. Read on:

    What Causes Stretch Marks

Stretch marks are caused when the skin stretches beyond its breaking point i.e. the point beyond which no amount of collagen repair can heal the skin. This results in a thin pink, or red or white lines on the skin.
These lines are called stretch marks.
If such a stretching continues, the dermal tissues too start to wear off, getting inflamed in the process which might result in slight internal bleeding as well.

The illustration below will help you to understand the difference between a normal and stretched skin better.

Stretch marks are not always caused due to fat fluctuations. Sometimes stretch marks may also be due to genetic concerns, usual pregnancy effects, a side effect of taking medicines or lotions such as Corticosteroid creams, lotions, and pills which reduce the skin’s elasticity, adrenal glands’ functional disorders or due to diseases such as Cushing’s, Marfan’s or Ehlers-Danlos

Can the Appearance of Stretch Marks be improved?
The sure shot technique for stretch marks removal will be discussed in the later section but there are some other treatments also which have been known to work. These are:

    • Application of creams which contain collagen booster formulations such as tretinoin, isotretinoin etc
    • Microdermabrasion, the treatment which works by creating wounds on the skin to facilitate faster collagen generation and hence skin rejuvenation
    • Fractional photothermolysis which works on the same principle as laser skin rejuvenation also heals the skin well by focus targeting i.e. targeting smaller areas and causing even lesser skin damage.

How does a typical Laser Stretch Mark Removal treatment look like?
At Kosmoderma, we do Fractional Laser Scar Treatment. A breakup of the same for better understanding can be described as below:

Every stretch mark is first targeted individually. Once that is done, a colour blending laser treatment is administered. If some of the stretch marks still remain because of them being differently coloured, a separate laser technology may have to be used. However, given the Indian skin type, this is a pretty rare occurrence.

Once the blending is complete, collagen stimulation is done to ensure a speedy and effective recovery. Post this skin smoothening using peels can be done as and when required.

Finally, no side effects have been reported for any of the treatments so you can be assured of the safety esp when the equipments being used are US-FDA approved.

Hope this helped to answer your queries.

  • Monsoons: Let your Skin Enjoy too!

The result- sometimes you get drenched and other times, you feel as if you carried the umbrella’s weight uselessly.

Now, this was you- a being with fully grown smart brain capable of taking actions as and when required.
    Ever wonder about your skin?
The poor skin- your first line of defence though isn’t used to such changing climatic conditions and even if it suffers, the max it can do is give you subtle signals for help.

But, when you have Kosmoderma by your side, does your skin really need to worry? Well no and this is why we are sharing with you the easiest skin care regime for the monsoons!

Wash your face Twice- at least
Yes, because we know that most of the times you are in office in the air conditioned environment so washing once in the morning and cleansing up well once you reach home will suffice.
In case you travel in between, keep the wet wipes handy! And of course if you use a wipe in between, sunscreen application will have to be done without fail!

Sleep sans any cream on your face
Yes, because your skin needs to breathe and feel at home too. Give it some time to relax and avoid any beauty product application before sleeping

Replace your regular moisturiser with essential oils
And do not apply them after having a bath. Apply them immediately after waking up and then get a good bath with lukewarm water. You can alternate with hot and cold water while bathing but that might be too much of an effort hence-lukewarm.
The reason- you wouldn’t want your pores to be breathing enough to inhale infections that abound during monsoons!

Keep the usage of antiperspirants and deodorants to minimum
Yes, because the pores do not want to get clogged, neither should your sweat accumulate. Just clean up the usual way- soap/body lotion and water

Eat healthy and go low on fat
Will help your internal systems because the metabolism goes a bit slow in monsoons. So why load up?
(PS: It is okay to have pakoras and tea once in a while to enjoy the rains to the fullest but just make sure that the rest of the days, you stick to your health more)

    Get back to the Basics
No fancy makeups or creams, apply sandalwood paste. The purest form and you will see the magic on your own.

    Feel good about yourself
Listen to some good music, dance, read some good books, watch some good tv series and do anything and everything that keeps you happy because a happy you is definitely a healthy and glowing you!

    Hope that helps!

  • Relax your eyes exercises for eye muscle movement

our eyes are always working and struggling with the strain to focus.

Needless to say that hereditary causes apart, most of us are walking around with spectacles on or our crow feet have started to appear already, much earlier than when they ideally should have had.

Now, with such a constant stress, can we do something to sooth up our eyes?
Well Yes! Other than just waiting and going for eye massages or applying creams, there is something you can do daily and at intervals to soothe those tired muscles more effectively.

    Palming
Easiest of all the exercises and still one of the most effective for immediate relief, for a long term one, you will need to repeat this exercise at regular intervals.

    What to do:

    • Rub your palms against each other to warm them up sufficiently
    • Now, cup your eyes with these warm palms
    • Make sure that the palms do not touch the eyes
    • Keep your hands like that for some 2-3 minutes
    • While doing this, ensure that your eyes are closed and you see darkness (try not to focus on the light from the outside since that would be a distraction)
    • When done, open your eyes slowly to avoid any sudden light exposure.

    Eye Rolling
When we say eye rolling, it is not the “rolling your eyes in exasperation”. What we mean here is that you need to gradually roll your eyes clockwise so that your muscles relax.

    What to do:

    • Sit straight with your spine stretched
    • Let your eyes relax, do not focus on anything in particular, let your gaze wander
    • Now, tilt your head a bit so that to look at the ceiling, your eyes still have to tilt upwards. Hold your eyes there for a second
    • Now, gradually move your eyes in a clockwise direction and hold on your eyes for a bit at 90 degrees, 180 degrees, 270 degrees and 0 degrees to the vertical
    • Repeat the process for about 5 times

Caution: Do not do it fast. Do this exercise with a calm mind and with the clear motive of relaxation.

    Distant Gazing
This involves looking aimlessly. Yes, that is the key- do not focus anywhere. Just draw a blank and let your eyes wander.
However, that does not mean that you have to keep moving your eyes. Keep them at a place for a while and then gradually shift.
What can help better- think about a pleasant memory as you gaze into the infinite. This will not just relax your eyes but also put your brain cells at rest

    Blinking
One major reason why our eyes get drained a lot while focussing on our screens is the lack of blink. The brain is by default trained to not blink much if it has to be attentive.

The lack of blinking dries out your eyes and strains the eye muscles more as the timing for them to remain stretched increases. Thus, every time they come back to normal, some elasticity gets lost.
If however, you blink continously (once in 4 seconds being ideal), no such damage happens and your eyes remain lubricated enough to be strained.

Important: while working on laptops or in general focussing on screens, it is natural for the brain to forget the need to blink. You will hence have to train your brain accordingly.

  • Your Guide to Morning Glow

    The Skin Care routine

This is something that gets reiterated time and again. Follow your Cleanse-Tone-Moisturise routine religiously. And if you are too lazy to do that too, then do the following:

    • Wash your face with a mild face wash
    • Gently massage almond oil into your skin and let it remain for some 30 minutes
    • Gently dab your face off with cotton dipped in lukewarm water
    • Go to sleep

    Letting the skin breathe
There is a reason why we asked you to dab the skin later. Contrary to the popular opinion where you are asked to lather up moisturisers before sleeping, it is important that you let your skin breathe.

You have already provided the necessary cleaning and moisturisation and while you are awake, your skin has worked fast enough to absorb the essential nutrients. So, when you go to sleep, just like your brain, your skin expects some relaxation too and hence, going bare skin is the best way to help recuperate it.

    The Food to eat
It is usually suggested that one should apply fruit masks but when any mask acts on the surface itself then is it any logical to put it on the face.
Instead drink your nutrients. An intake of a glass (200ml) of citrus fruit juice and about 10 ml of beetroot juice daily will work the wonders for not just your skin but the entire body’s well being.

    The under Eye area
We asked you to apply almond oil, well while applying massage it in your under eye areas too to soothe the muscles. Doing this will help your eyes relax.

    The Hair Care
Comb your hair every night before going to bed. Tie them in a light knot to avoid them getting all tangled up. Prefer satin pillow covers since they are smooth and result in lesser hair breakage and tangling

    The fluid intake and excretion
You should not drink a lot of water before sleeping because it might result in either excess water retention resulting in puffiness or you will have to make frequent trips to the washroom which would then mess up with your sleep routine.
You may however, soak your feet in warm water for some 20 minutes and then go to sleep. This will not just soothen up the skin of your sole but also relax your muscles facilitating a good night sleep.

We know that you must be surprised as to why we listed so many different aspects while talking of a morning glow.
The thing however is that the glow is not just about your face, the glow comes when your body on the whole is relaxed and happy.

Follow all this and we are waiting for your happy stories to listen to.

  • Why Peels and not Peel-Offs

But do these peel off masks actually work or is it only in our heads? But, if not peel offs then are peels any better?
This blog aims to answer this dilemma.

    How Peel off Masks work?

Peel off masks work by sticking to the skin surface in their liquid form. In the process of drying up, these masks attach themselves to the skin forming a bond with the dirt and dust particles on the surface.
When dried and peeled, the mask comes off and the impurities and excess oil come along with it. Our blackheads and whiteheads which are essentially the excess oil and impurities clogging the skin pores thus come off.

In some cases, the mask peels off the finer facial hair too which makes the skin appear lighter. It has been claimed that peel off masks containing activated charcoal seep into the deeper layers and can remove the impurities from the deeper layers but no experimental evidence has yet substantiated the claims.

    How Peels Work?
Chemical peels on the other hand involve peeling off of the skin by application of an acidic solution in order to boost collagen production which in turn facilitates skin regeneration.
The chemical solution thus applied to the skin causes it to exfoliate and eventually peel off giving way to the generation of fresh skin.
The new, regenerated skin is usually smoother and less wrinkled than the older one because of the boosted collagen production.

    A comparison of Benefits
Unlike the acid solution used in chemical peels which seeps into the deeper skin layers to facilitate the skin peeling and also skin rejuvenation, peel off masks work on the surface itself.

In some cases, dermatologists have also claimed that the fact that the patients can themselves peel the mask off and feel the tingling sensation results in more of psychological perception of skin improvement as against any actual changes.

However, considering that not everything can be psychological, peel off masks mostly have exfoliating effects on the skin.

Chemical Peels on the other hand have the following benefits:

    • Reduction of fine lines and wrinkles
    • Removal of dead skin cells
    • Smoothening of the rough texture
    • Improvement of skin hydration
    • Skin softening and reduction of open pores
    • Lightening of pigments and dark spots
    • Reduction in the appearance of acne scars
    • Reduction and drying out of active acne
    • Exfoliation of razor bumps
    • Reduction of ingrown hair
    • Enhancement of homecare programs by allowing deeper penetration of active products

We feel enough has been said already. Now, while we would suggest a Chemical Peel over a Peel off, ultimately it is your skin and your choice!

  • Understanding Skin Abrasion based Rejuvenation

Other than microdermabrasion, there is microdermabrasion-microparticles too which is an innovative way to treat minor ailments.
The text below discusses dermabrasion against microdermabrasion microparticles.

    The Working Principles
Dermabrasion essentially scrapes away the surface or epidermal layer of the skin. Done by means of a rotating wire brush, the process creates controlled wounds on the target areas. The wound creation facilitates formation of new cells in the area.
The time for the wounds to heal takes anywhere between a few days to over a week.

Microdermabrasion Microparticles (MM) also works on the same principle but it is comparatively less abrasive with regards to dermabrasion. Instead of a wire brush, MM involves blowing off microparticles onto the skin. No wound is created in the process but the microparticles stimulate the growth of new skin cells which helps improving the appearance of the skin.

    Results and Effectiveness
Considering that dermabrasion is a pretty aggressive technique which creates wounds, the results of the process are considerably better than MM. While MM can improve only the surficial skin qualities, dermabrasion can work on correcting fine lines, wrinkles, age spots, sun damage and hyperpigmentation.
Dermabrasion can also lessen the scars and in some cases help in tattoo removal too.

    Side Effects and Limitations
Both dermabrasion as well as MM are dependant on the experience of the dermatologist/therapist. If not done right, the treatments can result in hyperpigmentation, hypopigmentation, thickening of the skin and even scarring.
It is thus recommended that if the wound caused by the process becomes, red, swollen or itchy, medical help should be sought.

That was all we had to offer for now. Hope it added to your already huge knowledge pool!

  • Say Goodbye to Dull Skin

What can we do about it?

Dullness of the skin is very normal after a certain age as your cell rejuvenation process slows down. It is very important to follow a proper home care regimen to keep that glow. Cleansing, exfoliating, toning, moisturising should be an essential part of your regimen on a regular basis. But only skin care regimen might not help if the skin is already dull.

Apart from following a good home care regimen, making a few lifestyle changes becomes very important. To avoid dull skin, one needs to take necessary measures like quit smoking, reduce alcohol, get enough sleep, drink plenty of water and eat healthy.

If you want to delay your aging process, your skin maintenance should start as early as in your twenties. But most people realize this when they start noticing damage on their skin in their late thirties. It is always never too late to start on a good skin maintenance program.

    Follow these few tips

    • You will need a sunscreen with SPF 30 at least! Make sure you apply sunscreen from head to toe every day, and use makeup that’s infused with SPF for even more protection. The sunscreen will not only guard your skin, but will also adjoin a bit of shine to your skin.
    • Apart from using mild exfoliants, use a retinol based night cream for skin renewal and pore size. Prescription-strength retinoids can boost collagen to reduce fine lines, deep wrinkles, unclog pores. It can speed up cell turnover to even out the discoloration and make your skin flawless and shiny.
    • A hyaluronic acid based serum can be used to rehydrate your skin. Hyaluronic acid is a lubricating fluid that’s naturally found in the skin, eyes, joints, fluid and connective tissue. As body collagen declines, the appearance of wrinkles and discoloration become more visible. Maximizing collagen levels will keep skin supple. Hyaluronic acid keeps collagen synthesis up, as well as retains skin moisture and contribute to the anti-aging benefits to the skin.
    • An oral antioxidant also helps. Antioxidants fight free radical damage, boost immunity, delay skin aging and protect against sun damage. It almost works as an internal sun screen for your body. It can prolong and even make some skin reversals of damage that will take years off without much cost & can give you that ever glowing skin.
    • Also take professional help if needed. There is no need to be afraid of undergoing a skin treatment as long as you know that you are consulting a professional. Get MediFacials at skin clinics that include chemical peels, or PhotoFacials with a laser instead of regular facials. This will penetrate deep into your skin to bring back the glow & will address many age related skin issues.

    Home remedies for dull skin

    • Make a face scrub with wheat husk, a few drops of lemon and milk. Apply the scrub with gentle circular strokes and wash with normal water. Use the scrub twice a week to remove dead skin. It rejuvenates the skin by stimulating blood circulation and gives the glow without oiliness.
    • Soak a teaspoon of urad dal and 5-6 almonds overnight. Add 1 tablespoon of raw milk & grind this to a fine paste. Apply this protein mask on face and wash it off after 20 minutes rubbing in circular motion. This mask nourishes the facial skin, removes dead skin, adds moisture and enhances the complexion.

Schedule an appointment with your dermatologist if lifestyle and cosmetic remedies don’t seem to be helping your dull skin problem. Your dermatologist can suggest a number of skin care procedures to be done in the office to help speed skin cell turnover and reveal more youthful skin.

  • Vitamin D for Skin, Hair & Body

Vitamin D is very important for many functions in the body.

    • It Supports cardiovascular health and regulates blood pressure
    • Important in the absorption of certain nutrients such as calcium and phosphorus
    • Plays a part in regulating insulin and blood sugar levels
    • Supports the immune system

    Sources of Vitamin D

Unlike other vitamins, vitamin D is not naturally found in food. Our body is able to synthesize vitamin D by processing sunlight when it hits the skin. On average, we need about 10 – 15 minutes of sunlight exposure every day.

For those who do not receive adequate sun exposure, vitamin D deficiency is often a result. Vitamin D deficiency can cause many problems such as fatigue, weakened bones, joint pain, muscle cramping and other problems.

In cases of vitamin D deficiency or in cases for those who do not have adequate sun exposure where they live, vitamin D can be obtained from foods fortified with vitamin D such as milk, orange juice and cheese and cereals. Other natural sources of vitamin D include seafood such as salmon and tuna.

Try to enjoy the mild morning sun because this is the commonest source of vitamin D. You can also eat vitamin D rich foods such as fish oil, eggs, organic meats, etc. Your doctor may suggest high dose vitamin D supplementation if it’s too low.

10 Beauty Benefits of Vitamin D

    1. Promotes Beautiful Skin
The skin is the largest organ. The state of the skin is often a good indicator of the health of the body. Vitamin D is very vital for the proper functioning of the skin.
    2. Treats Acne
If you are suffering from persistent acne, supplementing with vitamin D can do wonders for your skin. Many of those battling with severe acne actually find a significant reduction in acne when supplementing with vitamin D.
    3. Heals Psoriasis
Stress is a known aggravator for psoriasis and vitamin D is an important regulator of stress. Vitamin D can help reduce inflammation, redness and swelling in psoriasis. Supplementing with vitamin D can help prevent psoriasis flare-ups.
    4. Reduces the Appearance of Stretch Marks
Vitamin D is helps in the overall function of skin and helps prevent stretch marks by increasing the elasticity of the skin. It helps in the proper formation of skin to help reduce the occurrence of stretch marks, scars and dark spots.
    5. Prevents Premature Aging of Skin
Premature aging is when the skin starts developing wrinkles, fine lines, skin tags and age spots at a young age. It often occurs as a result of free radical damage on the skin. Vitamin D acts as an antioxidant to combat oxidative stress and free radical damage on the skin.
    6. Treats Eczema
Eczema is characterized by rough inflamed patches of skin that can form blisters that can cause itching and bleeding. Vitamin D can help treat conditions such as eczema. It can help greatly reduce the symptoms of eczema such as dryness, itchiness, inflammation, and pain.
    7. Relieves Rosacea
Rosacea is a chronic, relapsing condition characterized by redness and pimples mostly on the facial region. Vitamin D reduces swelling and redness of skin. It can help treat and manage rosacea.
    8. Promotes Hair Growth
Vitamin D receptors found in hair follicles play a vital role in the growth and resting cycles of the hair. Vitamin D signals to the keratinocytes found in the follicles to stimulate the growth of hair.
    9. Prevents Hair Loss
One of the signs of vitamin D deficiency or insufficiency is actually hair loss. Healthy hair follicles have a good supply of vitamin that allows them to function properly. Vitamin D is often lacking in damaged hair follicles and this leads to hair loss.
    10. Helps in Maintaining a Healthy Weight
Lack of vitamin D can lead to weight gain and difficulty in losing weight. Insufficient vitamin D in the blood, makes the body convert calories to fat at a rapid rate. Vitamin D is also needed for the absorption of nutrients such as calcium, which aid in weight loss.

    Caution When Taking Vitamin D!
If you suspect you have vitamin D deficiency, consult a doctor before self-diagnosing. The doctor will confirm your vitamin D levels through a blood test. Overdose of vitamin D is very fatal, toxic and can lead to death!!
