  • Worry not!!! One solution for your concerns. BB Cream!

Tinted moisturizer is a cross between your regular facial moisturizer and foundation. Tinted moisturizer, also known as BB Cream, is a light moisturizer that has a slight tint of color for sheer coverage. It hydrates the skin and evens out the complexion with sheer and natural coverage and feels very light on the skin. You don’t look made up and caked on with Tinted moisturizer. It lets your skin breathe!!

This is the latest buzz in the beauty industry in tropical climates, especially as the heat will not make this run and look blotchy.

Tinted moisturizers have moisture & sunscreen to protect the skin, usually an SPF 15. They also have antioxidants and some are infused with minerals. They are applied as you would a regular moisturiser and takes a few seconds to apply giving your skin an instant lift. You can apply a sunscreen on top of this for better sun protection if you are going to be outdoors a lot. Otherwise a tinted mosituriser with SPF will replace a moisturizer, foundation and sunscreen in your bathroom shelf.

Avoid using Tinted moisturizer with silicone, parabens, synthetic chemicals and petroleum-derivatives. Some are cloggy and are more like foundations than an actual Tinted moisturizer. Some dry into a powder form once applied and make the skin look dull. They don’t smell the best because usually they are fragrance free, but once you put it on it doesn’t smell bad.

    So who can use it?

Everyone can use Tinted moisturizer. If you like to look natural & flawless, Tinted moisturizer is for you. It can be used in any season. If you have wrinkles go for water or oil based so that they don’t settle in your wrinkles. It actually plumps up the skin and makes it dewy to give that radiant glow. Younger skin can go for matt finish to look less oily. Although there are some that go well with both the types of skin.

Tinted moisturizers last up to 4-6 hours, but the good part is it doesn’t wear off but your skin soaks it in. If required, You may reapply .It is very quick to apply and there is no time required for it to set in. It doesn’t conceal & cover like foundations, but it makes the blemishes, scars & pigmentation look lighter. It also covers redness or patchiness. It is not meant to be a full coverage product, but it is very beneficial for your skin.

The greatest benefit of all, it does not run and stain your clothes like heavier foundation and all it takes is a few seconds, so when you are on the go in the morning, this eases time constraint just by the sheer ease of application.

So the new age mantra is tinted moisturiser (BB Cream) as opposed to a foundation, especially if you are under 50 and want to look good but not made up!!!

  • Skin Issues with Frequent Fliers

    • Flying is very dehydrating for your organs, including your skin: Wash your face once you get on the flight to sweep off pollution and dirt. And of course, keep it moisturized. Avoid drinking coffee, alcohol, or sodas. These squeeze out the water of our cells, and we need as much as we can get while we’re up there. You should be drinking 2 glasses of water every hour.
    • Your body goes almost dormant when you travel: Stretch, jump, or go for a jog whenever you get a chance between the flights- anything to boost your circulation. Your skin always looks better after you work out and it makes you feel energetic as well.
    • For most people temporary Insomnia kicks in every time they are on the flight: Cover your eyes, listen to soothing music & try to catch up with your sleep. Try essential oils such as Lavender and Grapefruit that can put you to sleep.
    • Do not sleep with your mouth wide open: If you can’t help it, cover your mouth with something before you fall asleep. Breathing from your mouth, especially in the flight could be one of the reasons that you catch that nasty cold so frequently. Breath in from your nostrils so that all the recirculated air gets filtered before entering your system.
    • There is a strong link between frequent flying and skin cancer: Flying at higher altitudes and the higher latitudes near the poles presents the greatest danger. The amount of cosmic radiation at the poles can be two to three times more than the radiation at the equator. Earth’s electromagnetic field helps to block this radiation down here.

To minimize the risk of skin cancer or other radiation-induced problems, one should follow the prevention guidelines of the Skin Cancer Foundation.

    • Avoid sunburns by wearing hats and sunglasses and seeking the shade, especially between 10a.m. and 4 p.m.
    • Indoor tanning booths are equally bad.
    • Use sunscreen with an SPF of atleast 15 for everyday use. For extended outdoor activity, SPF of 30 or higher should be used. Sunscreen should be applied 30 minutes before going outside and reapplied every two hours or immediately after swimming or sweating.
    • Self inspections of your skin on a monthly basis and a yearly medical checkup with a dermatologist is also recommended.

So while you enjoy your frequent flier miles, make sure to follow these simple tips & keep flying higher& higher safely.

  • Effects of Air Pollution on Your Skin

Living in a city has its own positives & negatives. While some of us can’t imagine a life outside of a city, it’s important to know that when you live in a city, you just cannot avoid things like exhaust fumes, smoke and dust – and these can leave your skin feeling irritated and grimy. There are many other health hazards that come with city life, but effects on the skin alone include dryness, skin rashes, eczema and acne. Toxins in the air cause skin to age prematurely, especially on the face, neck and hands.

Skin’s natural barrier absorbs the day pollution that sticks to your skin. Over time, it can irritate and weaken the skin’s natural barrier and the skin becomes sensitive. Dirt, dust and smog in the air can clog pores, cause acne and give skin a lifeless and dull appearance. Free radicals can reduce oxygen in skin cells and decrease collagen production, which leads to rough, dry patches and fine lines. Long-term exposure to air pollution can also cause skin allergies, eczema, asthma and blood vessel damage.

    Skin Products That Block Pollution

While you cannot completely avoid pollutants in the air, there are ways to minimize the effects of pollution on your skin. To maintain healthy, radiant skin, try the following:
Cleansers and Exfoliants: To remove air pollutants from your skin, wash your face daily and exfoliate twice a week.
Moisturizer: It’s very important to wear moisturizer as it creates a barrier between your skin and free radicals and other pollutants. Along with your skin’s natural barrier, it acts as a double protection and keeps your skin hydrated.
Sunscreen: Pollution causes damage to the ozone layer. Because of this, the effects of free radicals and UV radiation on the skin increases. Overexposure to UV radiation can cause wrinkles and even skin cancer. Wear sunscreen on your face and neck every day to protect your skin.
Water: Drinking more water can also help because it keeps your skin well hydrated, increases cell production and improves circulation.
Supplements: Antioxidants and Vitamin C fight free radicals in the body, working to prevent and reverse the damage on your skin and also combat pollutants in the skin.

Taking care of yourself & the planet around you should be the priority. The way we will treat the planet, the planet will treat us. One of the most important things is to get pollution under control and be the change you want to see. When our lifestyle is sensible enough, it’s easier to take control of such environmental factors that can cause damage to our health & body. Follow these simple tips for the maintenance of your skin health and protect yourself.

  • You must Use Your: SUNSCREEN!

Everyone needs to wear sunscreen including children. Dark skinned people do have better protection from sun due to more melanin but sun rays can damage their skin as well. Health experts advise everyone, regardless of skin color, to use sunscreen regularly with an SPF of at least 15.

    What is SPF?

The Sun Protection Factor (SPF) refers to the sunscreen’s ability to screen or block out the sun’s harmful UVB rays. It measures the length of time a product protects against skin reddening from UVB, compared to how long the skin takes to redden without protection.

If it takes 20 minutes without protection to begin reddening, using an SPF 15 sunscreen theoretically prevents reddening 15 times longer – about 5 hours. To maintain the SPF, reapply sunscreen every two hours and right after swimming.Ensure your sunscreen has broad-spectrum protection that blocks both UVA and UVB rays.

Sunscreen contains ingredients that protect the skin from harmful ultraviolet rays. Too much exposure to the sun can lead to health problems and skin irritations.

Short term Damage: Skin that is overexposed to sunlight without sunscreen may sun burn, becomes red and dry, and discolouration may occur.

Long term Damage: One may age prematurely; wrinkles develop due to sun damage. Skin cancer develops due to exposure to the sun without sunscreen; melanoma is especially dangerous.

Most adults should use about 35 ml of sunscreen to cover their whole body. It’s about the same as an adult handful. Remember, most people don’t apply enough sunscreen. It’s OK to use more than you think you should. As mentioned above apply sunscreen 20 minutes before going out in the sun, and reapply every 2 hours or as soon as you get done swimming or sweating heavily.

Even with the ideal sunscreen, some UV rays can get through to your skin and cause damage. The Skin Cancer Foundation considers sunscreen one part of a comprehensive sun protection program, along with sun-protective clothing, sunglasses, shade, and sun avoidance from 10AM to 4 PM.

  • YOU ARE HOW YOU FEEL
Stress and it’s Effects on Your Body & Skin

Stress causes a chemical response in your body that makes skin more sensitive and reactive. It can also make it harder for skin problems to heal. Stress can worsen skin problems like psoriasis, rosacea, and eczema. It can also cause hives and other types of skin rashes and trigger a flare-up of fever blisters. One may also suffer hair loss, a dry itchy scalp, eczema & psoriasis flare ups on the scalp .

“Stress” plays a very important role in how you feel, which indirectly affect your skin and hair. So it’s important to cure the root cause before we address certain types of skin & hair issues. The best way to feel that you’re in good physical health is to undertake healthy behaviors. Change your environment to reduce stress, relax when you’re under pressure, and cope when there’s nothing you can do about the situation.

Let’s see what havoc stress can wreak on your body!

    • A lack of sleep, dehydration, and junk food cravings often go hand-in-hand with stress, which also trickles down to poor hair and skin health.
    • Stress can weaken overall skin and hair health. Stress can interrupt sleep patterns-a key component for skin and body repair.
    • Stress promotes skin irritants. Chronic stress deprives your skin of oxygen and essential nutrients-and without adequate amounts of them, you get skin conditions like acne.
    • Stress dries out everything. The negative effects of stress can present themselves on the skin with extreme dehydration that results in inflammation, hyperpigmentation, dullness and acne and also gives you wrinkles.
    • Even if you usually eat well and exercise, chronic high stress can prevent you from losing weight-or even cause weight gain because a high level of the stress hormone cortisol has been shown to increase appetite and cravings for junk food.
    • Stress causes hair loss. As stress causes the blood vessels begin to constrict, hair follicles are deprived of the oxygen, minerals, and vitamins it needs for healthy hair growth. In extreme cases, patients start to suffer from ailments such as Alopecia and Psoriasis, both of which contribute to weak and fragile hair that breaks easily.
    • Sometimes severe stress can lead to formation of nasty habits like hair twirling or twisting or nail biting, which become almost subconscious causing damage to your skin and hair.

  • Glutathione, Skin Whitening from Within

So what is Glutathione and why is it so effective?

Glutathione is an antioxidant that is produced naturally by the liver. Our Cells contain Glutathione, which is comprised of three amino acids: Cysteine, Glutamate and Glycine. What makes this antioxidant it so powerful is its presence in every type of cell, including the immune system. It helps neutralize free radicals (a highly volatile group of atoms which are formed when oxygen interacts with certain molecules) which damage other cells within the body. Glutathione has been known to help fight against some types of cancers and other diseases. But its cling to fame is its skin lightening ability.

Glutathione works in various ways to help lighten pigmentation of the skin. It helps eliminate toxins and ingest chemicals that the body has already absorbed and also helps intercept and neutralize toxins in the digestive system before the body has a chance to absorb them. It also helps lighten skin tone is by restricting the body from producing melanin, which is the pigment that gives the skin its color.

    Natural Sources of Glutathione

Tomatoes, Avocadoes, Oranges, Walnuts, Asparagus and Whey Protein are great sources of Glutathione. The body however can only produce a limited amount of glutathione from the intake of fresh fruits, vegetables and nuts.

Hence in order to treat certain conditions, Glutathione can be availed as a dietary supplement. Glutathione supplements are available in different form factors, from soaps and creams to oral pills/capsules and injectable (IV) forms. But it is most effective when it reaches and enters the blood stream. As a result, injectable forms yield better results since glutathione is transported through the bloodstream to those areas where it is required.

    When Will I see Results?*

Duration of the treatment depends on the color of skin:

    • Medium Brown Skin- 1-3months
    • Dark Brown Skin- 3-6months
    • Very Dark Skin- 6-12 months or more

It should be noted though, that for results, regular use as prescribed by your dermatologist is highly recommended. Ideally, a person undergoing Glutathione therapy should take Vitamin C equivalent to two to three times the dose of Glutathione being consumed. Vitamin C helps keep the Glutathione in an absorbable form.

    Are There any Side Effects?

As it is naturally present within the body, Glutathione has relatively low side-effects. However, precautions should be taken to ensure safe and effective results. Glutathione shouldn’t be taken by people taking anti-psychotic drug and chemotherapeutic drug. It should not be taken if someone has undergone an operation or an organ transplant. Alcoholic beverages can decrease the absorption of Glutathione.

Along with Glutathione, chemical peeling which is commonly used and lasers can be done to improve the texture, quality and pigmentation of the skin.

  • Skin, Our First Line of Defense Or Skin as an Immune Barrier

There are many components of the skin that help it in acting as a protective physical and chemical barrier against germs and antigens. The two major components of the skin that play a major role in its defense mechanism could be categorized as below:

    • The Cell or the structural system – The structural formation and components of the skin are made of different types of cells which differ in function and in structure. Their jobs range from forming a covering and fortifying layer like our body’s picket fence – namely the epidermis of the skin, to sentinels which constantly keep watch for invading pathogens and shut them out, to friendly skin cells which help house healthy. Bacteria and organisms known as Commensals play a crucial role in maintaining our health and helping the body fight against more harmful invaders.
    • The Microbial or the living system – These friendly in house guests resting on our skin help keep potential invaders from entering our system and taking control and leading to harmful effects on our skin and our overall health. A fun fact to be noted is that, on different places on our body we have different types of organisms ranging from over 1000 bacterial and fungal species – called commensals – that live on our skin. They differ on various areas of our body depending on oiliness, dampness, and exposure to sunlight. Skin commensals which thrive on your foot differ completely from the commensals on your forearm, which again are different from the ones living on our face.

These two components of the skin form the immune system of the skin, thus protecting against any injury, infection or parasites. They either neutralize the invasion or set up an alarm in the form of “signals” or “warnings” like a rash to help identify and control any impending attack or existing health condition, thus helping us and our diagnosing physician treat us better.

How to take care of this important organ?

    Do’s
    • Use mild cleansers so that you don’t strip your skin of its natural moisturizing factor or essential oil content.
    • Moisturize daily to ensure perfect skin health.
    • Use a sunscreen regularly to help block the UV rays helping the skin protect the ongoing essential cell cycles and their turnover.
    • Apply antioxidant based creams
    • Apply prescription based retinoids to promote cell turnover.
    • Eat food rich in antioxidants and minerals.
    • Drink enough water to keep you and your skin hydrated.
    • Exfoliate regularly to get rid of dead skin debris and prevent housing harmful bacteria.
    Dont’s
    • Avoid wearing damp garments as this may promote fungal infections.
    • Avoid abusing and over using anti- bacterials or anti- microbials on skin.
    • Avoid using extremely hot water while bathing.
    • Avoid using harsh soaps
    • Sharing toiletries and clothing.

  • Skin Care for Your Blossoming Young Adults

Get them into the following habits:

    1. Use gentle, fragrance-free, pH balanced cleansers.
    2. To prevent dry skin, apply liberal amounts of moisturizer after bathing.
    3. Initiate early sun-protection behaviors, including:
      • The regular use of a broad-spectrum sunscreen that offers a Sun Protection Factor (SPF) of 30 or higher.
      • If a child is prone to skin irritation or allergic reactions, select a physical or chemical-free sunscreen with the ingredients zinc oxide or titanium dioxide.
      • Reapply sunscreen approximately every two hours, even on cloudy days, and after swimming or sweating.
      • Wear protective clothing, such as a long-sleeved shirt, pants, a wide-brimmed hat and sunglasses, where possible.
      • Seek shade when appropriate, and remember that the sun’s rays are strongest between 10 a.m. And 2 p.m.
    4. Habits like, getting enough sleep, drinking enough water, keeping stress to a minimum and making healthy food choices are also very crucial to minimize breakouts & other skin concerns as they enter puberty.
    When to see a doctor?

If they start experiencing skin concerns like acne, blackheads, whiteheads, blemishes, pigmentation, dry skin, scars etc., it’s time to visit a dermatologist. This usually happens when they step into adolescence. Keep in mind that the development of such skin conditions is really not all about a face’s cleanliness. This is why it is important for them to be evaluated by a doctor at the first sign of skin concern, so that a plan can be implemented to prevent such conditions.

A few salons and spas offer teen facials for young skin. But the question is, are they professional enough to handle the skin of these blossoming young adults?

If your teenager is experiencing such conditions, help him / her address the underlying source of the problem with the help of skin counselors and doctors and get them started on well-designed Teen treatments.

Skin Clinics give a lot of emphasis on carefully designing and customising treatments for young ones, according to the skin needs by putting together a range of products that penetrate deep without harming young skin. And even before that, counseling the teenager on how to take care of their skin in simple steps is very important to get results.

One of the other benefits of getting professional treatments from medical centers is that skilled aestheticians perform procedures under professional supervision. A simple thing like extraction can damage the skin if not performed properly. Safety & hygiene are also given utmost importance.

    Homecare Masks:
    Oily skin

    Rice Bran Powder Mask
It gently exfoliates and is an old Japanese secret for smooth and flawless skin. Rice bran powder is said to prevent wrinkles, quickly heal blemishes, and absorb the dirt and oil from the pores. Mix it with raw milk and oatmeal, and you’ve got a mask. Apply & leave on for 10-12 minutes & rinse off.

    Combination skin

    Papaya Mask
Papaya is an all-natural remedy that removes dead skin cells and excess lipids from the surface of the skin, leaving it soft and smooth.
Rinse your face with water and pat dry. Mash up the flesh of the papaya well, until it is of a consistency that can be easily applied to your skin. Leave it on for 15-20 minutes, and then rinse off completely with warm water. If your skin has a tendency to get dry after you cleanse it, use a moisturizer appropriate for your skin type afterwards.
Papaya also contains an enzyme called papain, which reduces inflammation and helps prevent acne.

    Dry to Normal skin

    Avocado and Honey Mask
Just mix 2 tbsp. of honey with half a mashed avocado, leave the mixture on for 15 minutes, and rinse off.
Avocado and honey combine their qualities of being a good source of sterolin and humectants to treat the misery brought on by having a dry skin in cold weather.
The avocado contains vitamin C, vitamin A, it also contains all the B vitamins and provides a significant amount of vitamin E.

So remember, some timely preventive maintenance at the right age could help your children minimize the effects of puberty and boost their self-confidence, while reducing the risk of physical* as well as mental scarring.

  • Is Makeup Bad for Your Skin?

So, Is Makeup Bad for Your Skin?

Here are some Do’s and Don’ts on makeup, so it does not spoil your skin.

    Don’ts

    Don’t use expired cosmetics

Throw out everything that’s been on your shelf for more than two years. Cosmetics have a shelf life of one or two years and after that the chemicals start to degenerate, the oils become rancid and the emulsions begin to separate making them potentially harmful.

    Don’t share makeup

These include lipsticks, eyeliners, mascara etc. You’d be sharing your skin’s bacteria and spreading infections, too.

Don’t add water to dilute caked or thickened mascara and eyeliner

You’re adding a potential source of infection – water – which contains micro-organisms. Increased water content in a product creates an optimum environment for bacterial multiplication. You can get styes, conjunctivitis or other harmful fungal eye infections.

    Don’t sleep with makeup on

No matter how tired you are – always remove makeup before you go to bed. Make up creates a breeding ground for bacteria and clogs your pores.

Don’t use makeup with these ingredients

Watch out for these two potential irritants in your makeup.

Parabens: A group of chemicals used as preservatives in cosmetics. The solution is to use paraben free products.

Sodium lauryl sulphate: A chemical used in cosmetics for the basic purpose of increasing the spreadability of products like cream. This chemical is proven to cause allergieson many skin types.

    Do’s

Do buy makeup that suits your skin type

It’s very important to wear make up according to your skin type. If you have dry or dehydrated skin, your makeup should be more moisturizing & oil based. But if you have oily skin, it’s better to use mineral powdered makeup & make up that are fragrance and oil-free. Also, look for cosmetics that are labeled hypoallergenic for sensitive skin (they’re less likely to cause allergic reactions) and non-comedogenic (they won’t block pores) for acneic skin to help avoid skin reactions & clogging.

    Do invest in quality brands

Buy one lipstick instead of four cheaper ones. It’s worth the money. Not only will you be getting a tried and tested product, but also one that is made under ethical conditions. This way you can look good and feel good about your purchase too!

    Do a test patch

As a rule fo thumb, try any product you are considering on a small test patch on the inside of your arm. If after 24 hours no redness or reaction develops, go ahead and buy it.

    Do clean your makeup tools

This includes lip brushes, sponges, rouge brushes, powder puffs regularly, or replace them every few months. Leftover cosmetic residue is greasy and sticky, and breeds bacteria. You can use mild liquid detergents meant for wool and silks, to wash your tools.

Do choose makeup with a sun-protective factor

Maintain a good skincare routine. Follow your CTM (cleanse-tone-moisturize) routine before makeup application. If you neglect your skin, achieving a flattering makeup application can be difficult no matter how carefully and naturally you apply. Your make up should have SPF to protect the skin from sun damage.
