  • Post workout hair and skin care

    Skin care

Let us begin with skin care. You must totally avoid wiping sweat with your hands as dirt transferred can lead to acne or boils. It is good to carry a clean napkin or wet wipes instead. A mild face wipe is best as it keeps the skin supple. Sweat is excellent for skin as it helps get rid of toxins that clog skin pores and result in blemishes. Real cleansing is the answer to remove toxins from the skin surface. Facial wipes eliminate some of the oil and grime but cold water and cleanser are the best, as they also help in calming the flush.

It is advised to wash your face with a mild face wash and shower with normal to cold water as warm or hot water tends to take away the natural oils from our body leaving the skin itchy and dry. Scrub should never be used after working out and you must apply a liberal quantity of face as well as body moisturizer. It is possible that you will develop face and back acne, boils, friction burns or even fungal infections if you don’t take a shower just after an exercise session or don’t change your gym gear.

All makeup must be removed before you start your work out session. Make up can clog skin pores which can again lead to acne. It is a good idea to clean your face before gym even when you are not wearing any makeup. Apply sunscreen with proper UVA and UVB protection when exercising outdoors.

    Hair care

You don’t have to wash your hair every day after a workout. This is a very common mistake many of us make, as exercising tends to build up sweat making the scalp feel grimy. Nevertheless shampoo should only be used two to three times in a week as too much washing can rob our scalp of its natural oils. Dry shampoo is an option if your hair feels very greasy and dirty but they are not a substitute for regular shampoo.

A deep moisturizing conditioner should be used to safeguard hair from the damage of excessive shampooing. You can use one with sunscreen as it protects your mane from the harsh UV sun rays, especially when training outdoors.

Hair tied back will make that big difference between cool waves or a frizzy mess. It is even better if you can cover your hair with a sweat resistant bandana or a scarf. It helps shield our hair from any workout trauma, while absorbing the frizz creating sweat. Hair should be tied loosely at the back as very tight ponytails can result in traction alopecia, which gives the impression of retreating hairline.

  • Skincare During Pregnancy : DO’s & DON’Ts

    Do not use Retinoids
Retinoids are found in some anti- aging moisturizers. These are a type of vitamin A that speeds up cell division and prevent skin collagen from breaking down.
But retinoids are one of the skin- care ingredients that expectant moms should stay away from. Some studies have shown that high doses of vitamin A during pregnancy can be harmful to an unborn child. And oral retinoids, such as isotretinoin (Accutane, an acne treatment), are known to cause birth defects.
There is no data to show these retinoids ingredients are harmful when used on the skin- but it is good to be extra cautious.

    Avoid certain products for Acne
If you”re dealing with pregnancy- induced acne, consult a dermatologist. Stay away from leave- on acne lotions, gels, and creams, as well as at- home peels, which can contain salicylic acid or retinoids. Using a facial wash that contains no more than 2 percent salicylic is considered safe. And of course do not take oral form of the retinoid Accutane. Glycolic acidinAHA,is safe to use.

    Avoid Salicylic acid
Salicylic acid is another no- no for pregnant women. High doses of the acid in its oral form have been shown in studies to cause birth defects and various pregnancy complications. Small amounts applied to the skin are considered safe, but doctors are being cautious by recommending that pregnant women should avoid the topical use of salicylic acid.
This mild acid is used to treat certain skin disorders, including acne, and you can find it in a number of skin products, such as cleansers and toners and exfoliants. If you must have a skin peel, have it done professionally at your dermatologist”s clinic. A dermatologist will know how to do it safely during pregnancy.

    Avoid Soy
While soy- based lotions and facial products are generally safe to use, Soy can make the “mask of pregnancy” (dark patches on facial skin) worse. Soy has estrogenic effects, which can make those dark patches, also known as melasma or chloasma, deeper. If you have dark skin or melasma, avoid these products, or choose “active soy” products from which the estrogenic components have been taken out.

Skin Care product that you MUST USE!!!

    Sunscreens
Sunscreens, including those with ingredients that penetrate the skin, are perfectly safe during pregnancy. Also, Titanium dioxide and zinc oxide- are powerful physical sunscreens and do not penetrate the skin.
In addition to sunscreen, we advise sun- smart behaviours- avoiding the sun between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m., using a sun hat, sunglasses and sun- protective clothing; and reapplying your sunscreen every two hours. This helps with pregnancy mask and aging process.

Kosmoderma has a range of medical graded products called “Kosmocare” that are safe to use during pregnancy. Consult our dermatologist to know more about Kosmocare product line. • You cant help the weather but you can certainly help your skin and hair

High humidity in atmosphere can make your skin oilier & patchy. Due to which cell turnover goes down.

It is very essential to exfoliate gently at least twice a week to get rid of dead skin layers. Cleanse your face at least twice a day & keep it dirt free. People have a tendency to be aggressive the minute they see a zit forming. If you use gentle products and maintain a good, simple routine using sunscreen regularly and incorporating chemical peels/exfoliants, your skin will transition smoothly.

Along with skin, it is equally important to take care of hair. Humid air makes the hair drier & frizzy so it’s very important to keep hair simple with fewer styles and less usage of any chemicals & hair products.

Home tip for Hair fall & Dandruff

Soak Fenugreek seeds (Methi seeds) in water overnight. Grind them with coconut milk and massage this paste on scalp and hair. Leave it for an hour. • Skin Care Secrets

    Are you dehydrated?
When water is lost from the surface of the skin, it leaves the skin feeling tight, flaky & rough. This is superficial dehydration. This water loss from the skin can be mistaken for being dry when in fact it means dehydration. At first, this affects the surface of the skin & if it is left untreated it results in deeper water loss in dermis which in turn will start to cause aging (wrinkles, lines, folds). Make sure you drink plenty of water & moisturize your skin regularly. Use heavier night creams or serums for hydration, if your skin is too dry.

    Do you reapply your sunscreen?
You protect your face with a layer of sunscreen every morning. But do you reapply? The sunscreen sweats off, rubs off, and melts in your face, even when its water proof. If you are not able to wash off your face again during the day to reapply the sunscreen, just apply mineral powder with SPF in it at least 2 to 3 times a day.

Do you treat your neck & chest same as your face?
Many of us pay a lot of attention to our faces, but our necks and chests get neglected. The skin on neck &chest is thinner than the skin on your face, and yet often it gets just as much sun exposure. Ignore these areas and you’ll likely see sun damage showing up as blotchy skin, broken capillaries, and scaly patches. Treat your neck and chest with the same care you show your face. That means anything you put on your face likemoisturizer, sunscreen, or anti-aging products, you should apply to your neck and chest as well.

Do you wash your face before going to bed every night?
It’s easy at the end of the day to fall into bed, exhausted. But think of what your face goes through in a day. Makeup, oils, dirt, and pollution all collect on your skin during the course of the day. Do you really want all that gunk to get all over your and end up with clogged pores and breakouts? Make it a habit to wash off all the dirt every night.

Do you have a sweet tooth?
Sugar is one of the worst foods for your skin. High blood sugar can cause changes to the collagen and other tissues in your skin, making it weaker and more prone to wrinkling Avoid foods with added sugar, such as soda, candy, and cookies, and steer clear of foods that break down quickly into sugar, including white bread, white rice, and pasta.

Do you pick at your acne?
It’s tempting to squeeze a pimple or chip away at the edge of a scab. But you have to learn self-control when it comes to your skin. If you pick off a scab or squeeze a pimple until it bleeds, you’re injuring the skin, which can lead to scarring. Leave scabs and pimples to heal on their own.

    Do you smoke?
Smoking ages your skin prematurely, just as spending a lot of time in the sun does. The habit can add 10 years or more to your appearance. The free radicals in cigarette smoke attack the collagen and elastic tissue in your skin, making your skin thinner, weaker, and more prone to wrinkling. Smoking also makes the wrinkles around your mouth and eyes start earlier and deepen sooner. There is only one solution, “Quit”. No matter how long you’ve been smoking, you’ll see benefits once you stop.

Do you see a dermatologist every year?
An annual exam for everyone, to look for moles, growths, or rashes that could signal a potential problem is very important. Checking your skin yourself is crucial, too, but a trained professional may notice a trouble spot that you might overlook or consider unimportant. In most cases, catching a problem early means it will be easier to fix.

  • Incorporate Grapeseed oil into your skin care routine…

    1. Great for oily/acne prone skin- It can help regulate the oil production in your skin. Skin needs a good supply of linoleic acid to help to strengthen cell membranes and improve skin health in general. Grape seed oil contains this fatty acid, so it can be a good solution to improve or cure various skin conditions. This oil also possesses anti-inflammatory properties.so it prevents acne breakoutsas well as helps to cure any existing acne problems.
    2. Great for dry skin-
It is a great moisturizer when your skin is drier or even chapped.
    3. Powerful antioxidant for anti-aging benefits- Yes, it contains antioxidants so it will protect you from those nasty free radicals that are determined to destroy your skin. It contains more antioxidant power than vitamin C & E- So it neutralizes the free radicals that our skin comes in contact with every day. Grapeseed contains proanthocyanidins, which are very potent antioxidants which help in diminishing the sun’s damaging effects and lessen free radical damage.
    4. Collagen-Grapeseed oil protects the collagen that keeps our skin firm. It also improves the production of elastin and hyaluronic acid (which helps bind moisture to the skin).
    5. Brightens the skin tone-When used daily and consistently, it may help your skin become more even and brighter.
    6. Helps with Under Eye Dark circles- This oil is very helpful in minimizing dark circles. Regular application shows great results.
    7. Prevents shaving rashes-It can be used as an alternative for shaving cream to prevent in grown hair & rashes.
    8. It Repairs- Grape seed oil can help strengthen and repair damaged or broken capillaries and blood vessels. This in turn, can help to improve circulation and alleviate conditions like, varicose veins, spider veins and haemorrhoids.
    9. The linoleic acid found in grape seed oil can be very beneficial in skin conditions like, acne, dermatitis and eczema.
    10. Light texture that penetrates easily into the skin- This is a lightweight oil so it will absorb quickly and not leave the skin feeling greasy. You can use this all over your body too. Mix with your body lotion/cream or use it at night on its own & wake up with a glowing skin.

  • Soap Vs Cleansers

Soap on the other hand is alkaline. Skin is slightly acidic. Healthy skin is a skin that maintains its normal pH value of 5.5 to 5.6. This pH contributes to the skin’s protective barrier function. Because of soap’s alkaline pH, it strips the skin’s protective barrier, known as “Acid Mantle” leaving it open to bacterial invasion. Normally it takes 3.5 hours for the skin to return to its normal pH.

When the skin is stripped, water is lost from the surface leaving the skin feeling tight, flaky& rough. This is superficial dehydration. This water loss from the skin can be mistaken for being dry when in fact it means dehydration.

The oil glands now receive messages telling them to produce more oil to compensate for that tight feeling. Because the surface of the skin becomes tight the oil that is being produced cannot flow freely to the surface thus creating clogged pores.

If the skin is oily, it becomes oilier & results in acne, pustules, papules, open/closed comedones.

On a dry skin (lacking oil), the water loss exaggerates the feeling of dryness causing it to feel uncomfortable. At first this affects the surface of the skin & if it is left untreated it results in deeper water loss in dermis which in turn will start to cause aging (wrinkles, lines, folds)

So pH balanced cleansers are better for skin than soaps that are usually alkaline.

  • Why do we get Under Eye Dark Circles?

    • Allergies
Dark circles under the eyes can be the result of allergies to airborne substances, such as pollen, dust, and pet dander, because of persistent eye rubbing

    • Fluid retention which causes puffiness that may cast shadows

Conditions that cause fluid retention (e.g. heart, thyroid, kidney, liver diseases) or medications that cause blood vessel dilation may be a factor.
    • Aging
The skin under the eyes is thin and delicate to begin with. As we age, skin and the fat pad under the eyes becomes thinner, causing blood vessels to become noticeable. This thins and relaxes the skin around the eyes and gives the appearance of dark circles. Sun damage can make it worse because it weakens skin.
    • Lack of sleep
A lack of sleep can make skin appear more pale, which allows blood vessels to be more visible through the skin, giving the appearance of bluish or dark circles.
    • Dehydration
Dark circles under the eyes can be a sign of dehydration. Be sure to drink enough water.
