  • Do Skin Lightening Creams actually work?

Understanding The Principle behind Skin Lightening

There are two major reasons which cause skin darkening:

    • Melanin deposition due to either genetics or sun damage
    • Frictional abrasions resulting from day to day activities such as harsh rubbing across the face by face towels, handkerchief or even bare hands to wipe the sweat off

Taking the first reason, melanin deposition happens at the layers below the epidermis. (Epidermis, is the top most skin layer or the layer which we see). This deposition gives a dark color to the top most layer.

Frictional deposition on the other hand darkens the skin cells by damaging them. As long as the collagen boosts are enough to fight this damage, the skin color doesn’t darken but once that starts getting affected too, the result is a dull damaged skin which first appears red but over time turn dark brown or black on account of damage and frictional heat.

    Where does the Solution Lie?

Needless to say the solution lies in repairing the skin and removing the melanin deposition and since both of these happen below the skin at the dermal levels, the solution has to come from there too.

An important point to note is that if the body has a tendency to deposit melanin, it will continue doing so and hence not just melanin removal but also preventing the melanin deposition will play a great role in the provision of an effective long lasting solution.

The biggest breakthrough in providing the near permanent solution for skin lightening is the usage of Glutathione or Kojic Acid based supplements.

Glutathione injections coupled with Glutathione shots and Kojic acid based maintenance creams have been known to provide the best results for someone who wants to go for full body skin lightening.

(For anyone concerned only about facial skin lightening, Lasers are the answer)

    How do skin creams work?

Skin creams work mostly at the surface and in cases where Kojic or Hyaluronic acids are being used, there is limited seepage into the sub epidermal layers.

The quantity that seeps into the lower layers isn’t enough to remove or restrict the melanin deposition and if any effect shows then it is over a considerable duration of time.

The creams which show results, work actually as a bleaching agent by lightening the skin tan and are more of an immediate gratification than a long lasting solution.

How can the creams be effective then, if at all they are?

Like we had mentioned before, skin lightening creams are effective but only if used for maintenance purpose. They can prevent the damage and provide a level one barrier for a well maintained and already treated skin but that is that.

To expect that they would actually solve the purpose would be nothing but a fallacy.

We hope that we could clear out why skin lightening creams shouldn’t be the answer if you are considering skin lightening seriously.

  • Soothing a Sunburn

    What is a Sunburn?

If you stay in the sun for too long without any protection, you may get a sunburn. A sunburn is the skin’s response to extreme ultraviolet (UV) exposure and indicates severe damage. The body protects itself from this harmful radiation by accelerating the production of melanin, the dark pigment that gives skin its normal color. When melanin production is accelerated, the extra melanin produced gives the skin a darker color, referred to as a tan.

Unfortunately, melanin can only protect the body from a certain amount of UV light. Eventually, if someone is continually exposed to it, UV radiation will cause their skin to burn in as little as 10 minutes of exposure!

After the exposure, skin may turn red in as little as 30 minutes, but most often takes 2 to 6 hours. Pain is usually most extreme 6 to 48 hours after exposure. The burn continues to develop for 24 to 72 hours, occasionally followed by peeling skin in 3 to 8 days. Some peeling and itching may continue for several weeks.

Sunburn can vary from mild to severe. The extent depends on the skin type and the amount of exposure to the sun. Sunburn is a serious risk factor for skin cancer and for sun damage. There is no such thing as a “base tan” – any color is a sign of damage. Minor sunburns typically cause nothing more than slight redness and tenderness to the affected areas. In more serious cases, blistering can occur. The earlier one starts treatment the more effective the healing process will be. Sunburn can lead to skin damage and sometimes it may result in skin cancer if not treated at the right time.

    Symtptoms of a Sunburn :

If you experience these symptoms, seek medical attention immediately.

    • Extreme blistering or peeling
    • Dizziness
    • Fever
    • Intense pain and tingling
    • Chills
    • Nausea or vomiting
    • Swelling
    • Headaches

Once the skin is burnt, efforts should be turned toward soothing the pain and aiding the healing process. As soon as it becomes apparent that the skin is sunburnt, the first thing that should be done is getting out of the sun, preferably indoors. Once the risk of further UV exposure is minimized, there are a number of things that can be done to treat the burn.

    How to treat Sunburn?

    Cooling and moisturizing
Cool your skin down with cold compression like placing damp towels on the skin or take a cold water bath or shower. After which, just pat dry your skin and immediately apply moisturizer to trap in water and ease the dryness. This will also help with peeling of the skin. Be aware of what ingredients are in moisturizing lotions. The skin can be hydrated by applying topical products containing Aloe Vera and/or vitamin E, which reduce inflammation.

    Pain Reliever
Pain relief medication should be taken as soon as signs of sunburn emerge. It will not only cut back on redness and swelling, but will also help with the severity of the symptoms. A low-dose hydrocortisone cream may also help reduce inflammation and itching.

If blisters form, do not break them. Breaking open blisters not only slows the skin’s healing process, but increase the risk of infection. If a blister breaks, make sure to clean the area gently with water and mild soap, apply antibacterial cream and protect the area with a wet dressing.

    Stay Hydrated
It is important for people with sunburn to drink extra water to prevent dehydration and help the skin heal. If one experiences dehydration or suffering from heat stress, IV fluids may be given, and a patient may be admitted to the hospital.

    Protect your skin
It will take a few days before you can go out in the sun again. But make sure you cover yourself with proper clothing, a hat and sun glasses. Apply broad-spectrum sunscreens meaning that it protects against both UVA and UVB radiation. The best protection is achieved by applying 15 to 30 minutes before exposure, followed by one reapplication 15 to 30 minutes after exposure begins. Further reapplication is only necessary after activities such as swimming, sweating, and rubbing.

Without due caution, anyone can become sunburnt. You can easily prevent the damage by taking precautions when you are out enjoying the sun. If at all it happens, you will now know how to cope with this uncomfortable condition. So don’t avoid the fun, just avoid the sunburn.

  • Say “No” to Dark Underarms….

    What’s the problem?
When it comes to your armpits, it is the melanin that causes the area to become darker either through external assault or internal aggression. What exactly are these aggressions? Before trying any of the underarm skin whitening remedies, treatments or creams, ensure you know the cause of dark under arms. Otherwise, you might be treating a wrong cause where you are likely to fail.

Here are some common causes that leave you with undesirable under arms.

Use of alcohol-based Deodorants and Antiperspirants
Antiperspirants are the most used products against excessive sweating. They work by seeping into pores and plugging sweat ducts. Aluminum compounds and other active antiperspirant ingredients are often dissolved in alcohol because it dries quickly and feels cool when applied. But it may also dry out the skin and cause antiperspirant irritation. Although rare, there could be a likelihood that some ingredients in deodorants and antiperspirants could cause dark skin under armpits. Try switching brands or using a deodorant instead of an antiperspirant.

    Excessive rubbing / Friction
If the flab on your underarms is constantly rubbing against something, it may result in hyper- keratosis, which is the thickening of the skin which actually provides protection against irritation. With hyper-keratosis comes hyperpigmentation, also known as “discoloration”. Unfortunately, there’s nothing you can do to prevent this due to the anatomy of your underarms. But you can minimize the friction. Avoid wearing rough clothing that can aggravate your underarm skin. Also, try to wear looser clothes that minimize this contact.

    Hormonal changes
Periodically, your body goes through hormonal changes, like when you get pregnant. This causes your body to increase the production of melanin, leading to blotchiness, uneven skin tone, and skin darkening on the upper lip, neck and yes, your underarms as well. Sometimes the discoloration goes away. But for some, it may stay on even after your pregnancy. See a dermatologist if the problem persists.

    Bacteria
If you do not clean your under arms properly, they will obviously appear black and dark. Dead skin will build up and microorganisms will thrive in the dark and sweaty conditions of your underarms. This may lead to a chronic infection in the deeper layers of your underarm skin, which then leads to the formation of rough, discolored skin that is red in the first place but slowly changes to become brown. So it’s important to wash your armpits regularly with an anti-bacterial soap. Preferably use a wash with tea tree. Tea tree oil has natural antiseptic properties and is very effective in killing bacteria.

A medical condition called acanthosis nigricans.
Dark underarms may also be as a result of a medical condition that is known as acanthosis nigricans, which is often associated with insulin resistance, obesity, hormonal disorders, certain medications, and cancer. Areas affected feel velvety and are a dark gray or brown color. Consult a doctor for proper diagnosis and treatment. There are many treatments available at skin clinics like laser and peels that could lighten the pigmentation.

    Shaving / Waxing
Know how your guy’s stubble looks dark and rough by the evening? Well, the same is happening to your underarm skin if shaving is your preferred method for hair removal. Underarm hair that has been shaved tends to be darker and coarser. Underarm waxing has its own drawbacks. It doesn’t truly get rid of underarm hair, but only reduces it. This means the hair will grow back and as it grows back, you will have to undergo another round of waxing, which can be uncomfortable at times and never ending! Instead of shaving or waxing, consider laser hair removal. These procedures remove hair below the skin’s surface and reduce the visibility of the hair.

    Try Laser Hair Removal
As the saying goes, prevention is always better than cure, the best way to prevent dark under arms would be Laser Hair Removal as it’s a hair reduction*. Not only can laser hair removal of the armpits erase hair growth, but it also wipes away follicles and stubble that make your underarm dark-coloured and unsightly. So you need not worry about that unwanted stubble and can spread your arms lovingly, anytime!

    Home remedies
You may try exfoliating your underarm with lemon & sugar scrub or soda bicarbonate with water. You may also try applying potato or cucumber juice for your dark underarms. But if these remedies do not show results, please consult a dermatologist.

  • Worry not!!! One solution for your concerns. BB Cream!

Tinted moisturizer is a cross between your regular facial moisturizer and foundation. Tinted moisturizer, also known as BB Cream, is a light moisturizer that has a slight tint of color for sheer coverage. It hydrates the skin and evens out the complexion with sheer and natural coverage and feels very light on the skin. You don’t look made up and caked on with Tinted moisturizer. It lets your skin breathe!!

This is the latest buzz in the beauty industry in tropical climates, especially as the heat will not make this run and look blotchy.

Tinted moisturizers have moisture & sunscreen to protect the skin, usually an SPF 15. They also have antioxidants and some are infused with minerals. They are applied as you would a regular moisturiser and takes a few seconds to apply giving your skin an instant lift. You can apply a sunscreen on top of this for better sun protection if you are going to be outdoors a lot. Otherwise a tinted mosituriser with SPF will replace a moisturizer, foundation and sunscreen in your bathroom shelf.

Avoid using Tinted moisturizer with silicone, parabens, synthetic chemicals and petroleum-derivatives. Some are cloggy and are more like foundations than an actual Tinted moisturizer. Some dry into a powder form once applied and make the skin look dull. They don’t smell the best because usually they are fragrance free, but once you put it on it doesn’t smell bad.

    So who can use it?

Everyone can use Tinted moisturizer. If you like to look natural & flawless, Tinted moisturizer is for you. It can be used in any season. If you have wrinkles go for water or oil based so that they don’t settle in your wrinkles. It actually plumps up the skin and makes it dewy to give that radiant glow. Younger skin can go for matt finish to look less oily. Although there are some that go well with both the types of skin.

Tinted moisturizers last up to 4-6 hours, but the good part is it doesn’t wear off but your skin soaks it in. If required, You may reapply .It is very quick to apply and there is no time required for it to set in. It doesn’t conceal & cover like foundations, but it makes the blemishes, scars & pigmentation look lighter. It also covers redness or patchiness. It is not meant to be a full coverage product, but it is very beneficial for your skin.

The greatest benefit of all, it does not run and stain your clothes like heavier foundation and all it takes is a few seconds, so when you are on the go in the morning, this eases time constraint just by the sheer ease of application.

So the new age mantra is tinted moisturiser (BB Cream) as opposed to a foundation, especially if you are under 50 and want to look good but not made up!!!

  • You must Use Your: SUNSCREEN!

Everyone needs to wear sunscreen including children. Dark skinned people do have better protection from sun due to more melanin but sun rays can damage their skin as well. Health experts advise everyone, regardless of skin color, to use sunscreen regularly with an SPF of at least 15.

    What is SPF?

The Sun Protection Factor (SPF) refers to the sunscreen’s ability to screen or block out the sun’s harmful UVB rays. It measures the length of time a product protects against skin reddening from UVB, compared to how long the skin takes to redden without protection.

If it takes 20 minutes without protection to begin reddening, using an SPF 15 sunscreen theoretically prevents reddening 15 times longer – about 5 hours. To maintain the SPF, reapply sunscreen every two hours and right after swimming.Ensure your sunscreen has broad-spectrum protection that blocks both UVA and UVB rays.

Sunscreen contains ingredients that protect the skin from harmful ultraviolet rays. Too much exposure to the sun can lead to health problems and skin irritations.

Short term Damage: Skin that is overexposed to sunlight without sunscreen may sun burn, becomes red and dry, and discolouration may occur.

Long term Damage: One may age prematurely; wrinkles develop due to sun damage. Skin cancer develops due to exposure to the sun without sunscreen; melanoma is especially dangerous.

Most adults should use about 35 ml of sunscreen to cover their whole body. It’s about the same as an adult handful. Remember, most people don’t apply enough sunscreen. It’s OK to use more than you think you should. As mentioned above apply sunscreen 20 minutes before going out in the sun, and reapply every 2 hours or as soon as you get done swimming or sweating heavily.

Even with the ideal sunscreen, some UV rays can get through to your skin and cause damage. The Skin Cancer Foundation considers sunscreen one part of a comprehensive sun protection program, along with sun-protective clothing, sunglasses, shade, and sun avoidance from 10AM to 4 PM.

  • Glutathione, Skin Whitening from Within

So what is Glutathione and why is it so effective?

Glutathione is an antioxidant that is produced naturally by the liver. Our Cells contain Glutathione, which is comprised of three amino acids: Cysteine, Glutamate and Glycine. What makes this antioxidant it so powerful is its presence in every type of cell, including the immune system. It helps neutralize free radicals (a highly volatile group of atoms which are formed when oxygen interacts with certain molecules) which damage other cells within the body. Glutathione has been known to help fight against some types of cancers and other diseases. But its cling to fame is its skin lightening ability.

Glutathione works in various ways to help lighten pigmentation of the skin. It helps eliminate toxins and ingest chemicals that the body has already absorbed and also helps intercept and neutralize toxins in the digestive system before the body has a chance to absorb them. It also helps lighten skin tone is by restricting the body from producing melanin, which is the pigment that gives the skin its color.

    Natural Sources of Glutathione

Tomatoes, Avocadoes, Oranges, Walnuts, Asparagus and Whey Protein are great sources of Glutathione. The body however can only produce a limited amount of glutathione from the intake of fresh fruits, vegetables and nuts.

Hence in order to treat certain conditions, Glutathione can be availed as a dietary supplement. Glutathione supplements are available in different form factors, from soaps and creams to oral pills/capsules and injectable (IV) forms. But it is most effective when it reaches and enters the blood stream. As a result, injectable forms yield better results since glutathione is transported through the bloodstream to those areas where it is required.

    When Will I see Results?*

Duration of the treatment depends on the color of skin:

    • Medium Brown Skin- 1-3months
    • Dark Brown Skin- 3-6months
    • Very Dark Skin- 6-12 months or more

It should be noted though, that for results, regular use as prescribed by your dermatologist is highly recommended. Ideally, a person undergoing Glutathione therapy should take Vitamin C equivalent to two to three times the dose of Glutathione being consumed. Vitamin C helps keep the Glutathione in an absorbable form.

    Are There any Side Effects?

As it is naturally present within the body, Glutathione has relatively low side-effects. However, precautions should be taken to ensure safe and effective results. Glutathione shouldn’t be taken by people taking anti-psychotic drug and chemotherapeutic drug. It should not be taken if someone has undergone an operation or an organ transplant. Alcoholic beverages can decrease the absorption of Glutathione.

Along with Glutathione, chemical peeling which is commonly used and lasers can be done to improve the texture, quality and pigmentation of the skin.
