  • Wet Moisturisers- What makes them better?

The moisturiser application involves applying it immediately after one has dried off after the shower little realising that drying up removes the water from the skin and the little that remains on the surface evaporates within 30 seconds.

Now, moisturisers work in two ways- occlusives which lock in the moisture and humectants which absorb the moisture from the air into the skin.

Majority of the moisture retention taken place thanks to the occlusives. Regarding the humectants doing their work, though many firms claims that the skin absorbs 60% of what is applied on it, there is no concrete study proving it and the absorption can be anywhere between 0 to 100 percent based on the skin type. This means that the probability of something from the air being absorbed in the skin becomes even less because the primary function of the skin is to act as a barrier and prevent any harmful substance from seeping into the deeper layers.

This means that the moisture retention happens the maximum immediately after the shower and before drying up- a fact which renders most of the moisturisers significantly diminished in their effectiveness. Also, applying them straight after shower is not a possibility since they would form a thick sticky paste.

This is where the concept of Wet Moisturisers comes.Wet Moisturisers are specifically curated to be applied right after the shower and before you wipe yourself off.

Though you might feel that the moisturiser is also dripping along with water but within a matter of 10 to 20 seconds it gets absorbed post which you can dry yourself off. Thus, your moisture content gets locked with the occlusives working at their efficient best.

The lab studies as well as in market results have been good and even though the concept is new, it is fast catching up. Afterall, who would not want to be done with the hydration concerns with just one time moisturiser application.

(At Kosmoderma, we believe that there are certain good OTC products which should be used for effective maintenance of the skin but if your skin has already got damaged because of lack of hydration, a moisturiser will have its set of limitations in curing it. In such a case, it is advisable that one visits the dermatologist for a better and effective treatment)

  • Understanding Skin Abrasion based Rejuvenation

Other than microdermabrasion, there is microdermabrasion-microparticles too which is an innovative way to treat minor ailments.
The text below discusses dermabrasion against microdermabrasion microparticles.

    The Working Principles
Dermabrasion essentially scrapes away the surface or epidermal layer of the skin. Done by means of a rotating wire brush, the process creates controlled wounds on the target areas. The wound creation facilitates formation of new cells in the area.
The time for the wounds to heal takes anywhere between a few days to over a week.

Microdermabrasion Microparticles (MM) also works on the same principle but it is comparatively less abrasive with regards to dermabrasion. Instead of a wire brush, MM involves blowing off microparticles onto the skin. No wound is created in the process but the microparticles stimulate the growth of new skin cells which helps improving the appearance of the skin.

    Results and Effectiveness
Considering that dermabrasion is a pretty aggressive technique which creates wounds, the results of the process are considerably better than MM. While MM can improve only the surficial skin qualities, dermabrasion can work on correcting fine lines, wrinkles, age spots, sun damage and hyperpigmentation.
Dermabrasion can also lessen the scars and in some cases help in tattoo removal too.

    Side Effects and Limitations
Both dermabrasion as well as MM are dependant on the experience of the dermatologist/therapist. If not done right, the treatments can result in hyperpigmentation, hypopigmentation, thickening of the skin and even scarring.
It is thus recommended that if the wound caused by the process becomes, red, swollen or itchy, medical help should be sought.

That was all we had to offer for now. Hope it added to your already huge knowledge pool!

  • Say Goodbye to Dull Skin

What can we do about it?

Dullness of the skin is very normal after a certain age as your cell rejuvenation process slows down. It is very important to follow a proper home care regimen to keep that glow. Cleansing, exfoliating, toning, moisturising should be an essential part of your regimen on a regular basis. But only skin care regimen might not help if the skin is already dull.

Apart from following a good home care regimen, making a few lifestyle changes becomes very important. To avoid dull skin, one needs to take necessary measures like quit smoking, reduce alcohol, get enough sleep, drink plenty of water and eat healthy.

If you want to delay your aging process, your skin maintenance should start as early as in your twenties. But most people realize this when they start noticing damage on their skin in their late thirties. It is always never too late to start on a good skin maintenance program.

    Follow these few tips

    • You will need a sunscreen with SPF 30 at least! Make sure you apply sunscreen from head to toe every day, and use makeup that’s infused with SPF for even more protection. The sunscreen will not only guard your skin, but will also adjoin a bit of shine to your skin.
    • Apart from using mild exfoliants, use a retinol based night cream for skin renewal and pore size. Prescription-strength retinoids can boost collagen to reduce fine lines, deep wrinkles, unclog pores. It can speed up cell turnover to even out the discoloration and make your skin flawless and shiny.
    • A hyaluronic acid based serum can be used to rehydrate your skin. Hyaluronic acid is a lubricating fluid that’s naturally found in the skin, eyes, joints, fluid and connective tissue. As body collagen declines, the appearance of wrinkles and discoloration become more visible. Maximizing collagen levels will keep skin supple. Hyaluronic acid keeps collagen synthesis up, as well as retains skin moisture and contribute to the anti-aging benefits to the skin.
    • An oral antioxidant also helps. Antioxidants fight free radical damage, boost immunity, delay skin aging and protect against sun damage. It almost works as an internal sun screen for your body. It can prolong and even make some skin reversals of damage that will take years off without much cost & can give you that ever glowing skin.
    • Also take professional help if needed. There is no need to be afraid of undergoing a skin treatment as long as you know that you are consulting a professional. Get MediFacials at skin clinics that include chemical peels, or PhotoFacials with a laser instead of regular facials. This will penetrate deep into your skin to bring back the glow & will address many age related skin issues.

    Home remedies for dull skin

    • Make a face scrub with wheat husk, a few drops of lemon and milk. Apply the scrub with gentle circular strokes and wash with normal water. Use the scrub twice a week to remove dead skin. It rejuvenates the skin by stimulating blood circulation and gives the glow without oiliness.
    • Soak a teaspoon of urad dal and 5-6 almonds overnight. Add 1 tablespoon of raw milk & grind this to a fine paste. Apply this protein mask on face and wash it off after 20 minutes rubbing in circular motion. This mask nourishes the facial skin, removes dead skin, adds moisture and enhances the complexion.

Schedule an appointment with your dermatologist if lifestyle and cosmetic remedies don’t seem to be helping your dull skin problem. Your dermatologist can suggest a number of skin care procedures to be done in the office to help speed skin cell turnover and reveal more youthful skin.

  • Can you be free of ‘Free Radicals’? – The theory of ‘Aging’

The major sources of free radicals include:

    • Ordinary body functions, such as breathing and digestion
    • Exposure to radiation
    • Exposure to other environmental pollutants
    • Consumption of cigarettes or tobacco, drugs, and alcohol
    • Certain medications or high use of antibiotics, which leads to antibiotic resistance
    • A poor diet that includes foods like unhealthy fats, too much sugar, pesticides, herbicides or synthetic additives. Many processed and refined foods contain oxidized fats that add free radicals to the body. Excessive amounts of sugar and sweeteners are other sources of free radical growth that contribute to aging, weight gain and inflammation.
    • Even too much exercise generates added free radicals
    • High amounts of emotional or physical stress. Stress hormones (like too much cortisol) can generate free radicals.

How does Free Radicals damage Skin?

Free radicals can damage the skin by trying to grab an extra electron from atoms in the skin. Once a free radical succeeds in gaining an electron from a nearby molecule, it leaves its victim short an electron. This interaction has now made the new molecule a free radical, causing a massive chain reaction where cells function poorly or die. This is called “oxidative stress”. When free radicals damage or kill enough cells in an organism, guess what happens. It ages!

Free radicals can damage our skin cells, DNA, and collagen production. We produce some internally as cell turnover, but the rest come from external threats like UV rays and pollution. Over time, the effect in our skin shows up as wrinkles, sagging, and roughness.

What does this have to do with hair?

Hair is not comprised of living cells, but its keratin-based structures are still susceptible to oxidative damage from a wide variety of sources. This damage leads to the following:

    • Split ends & Broken hairs
    • Rough cuticles
    • Frizzy, tangled hair
    • Lack of luster/ Loss of Colour
    • Diminished curl retention

While it is well-established that antioxidants are highly efficacious both when taken internally and applied to the skin via cosmetic preparations, it is natural to speculate whether or not they have equal value when applied topically to the hair, which is not a living cellular structure. Fortunately, the evidence indicates that there is plenty of benefit to be derived from the inclusion of antioxidants as components in formulations for rinse-off products, leave-in conditioners, and styling agents for hair.

    Antioxidants – The “self-sacrificing soldiers”

Antioxidants counteract free radicals because they’re essentially ‘self-sacrificing soldiers’. They donate an electron to the free radicals to “calm” them down and are consumed in the process. Antioxidants terminate the chain reaction before vital molecules are damaged. Antioxidants also boost immunity, delay skin aging and protect against sun damage. It almost works as an internal sunscreen for your body.

Our bodies use antioxidants to lessen the impact of free radicals, and our diets give us the tools to do so. Some of the most important antioxidants are:

    • Vitamins C and E and Selenium
    • Coenzyme Q10
    • Retinoic Acid
    • Flavonoids (Green Tea and Chocolate)

Although there are several systems within the body that combat free radicals, the body’s natural defenses are not sufficient at combating signs of aging alone; therefore, these powerful micronutrients must be supplied through diet or applied directly to the skin or scalp.

Antioxidants slow down and prevent the effect of free radicals that start oxidation that can lead to cell dysfunction. While we can never entirely stop the aging process, as diet high in antioxidant foods helps us age much more gracefully – living longer, healthier, more vibrant lives.

Antioxidants are found in many different types of foods. Your body can benefit from consuming these nutrients-rich foods several times a week.

    • Vitamin A can be found in vegetables and fruits such as carrots, pumpkin and mango.
    • Vitamin C is found in citrus fruits or vegetables such as kale and tomatoes.
    • Vitamin E can be found in nuts, seeds and oils.
    • Selenium is found in proteins like red meat, chicken, pork and eggs.

It’s best to ask your dermatologist for advice before buying vitamin or antioxidant for your skin and hair because it’s important to know exactly how much of these vitamins and antioxidants are in strong enough concentrations, and in the correct forms, to remain stable and to be effective.

It’s also Important that we take our regular antioxidant supplements after the age of 25 to fight free radicals. Whatever we eat is not completely absorbed by the body, hence supplementation is the key.

  • Skin Care Secrets

    Are you dehydrated?
When water is lost from the surface of the skin, it leaves the skin feeling tight, flaky & rough. This is superficial dehydration. This water loss from the skin can be mistaken for being dry when in fact it means dehydration. At first, this affects the surface of the skin & if it is left untreated it results in deeper water loss in dermis which in turn will start to cause aging (wrinkles, lines, folds). Make sure you drink plenty of water & moisturize your skin regularly. Use heavier night creams or serums for hydration, if your skin is too dry.

    Do you reapply your sunscreen?
You protect your face with a layer of sunscreen every morning. But do you reapply? The sunscreen sweats off, rubs off, and melts in your face, even when its water proof. If you are not able to wash off your face again during the day to reapply the sunscreen, just apply mineral powder with SPF in it at least 2 to 3 times a day.

Do you treat your neck & chest same as your face?
Many of us pay a lot of attention to our faces, but our necks and chests get neglected. The skin on neck &chest is thinner than the skin on your face, and yet often it gets just as much sun exposure. Ignore these areas and you’ll likely see sun damage showing up as blotchy skin, broken capillaries, and scaly patches. Treat your neck and chest with the same care you show your face. That means anything you put on your face likemoisturizer, sunscreen, or anti-aging products, you should apply to your neck and chest as well.

Do you wash your face before going to bed every night?
It’s easy at the end of the day to fall into bed, exhausted. But think of what your face goes through in a day. Makeup, oils, dirt, and pollution all collect on your skin during the course of the day. Do you really want all that gunk to get all over your and end up with clogged pores and breakouts? Make it a habit to wash off all the dirt every night.

Do you have a sweet tooth?
Sugar is one of the worst foods for your skin. High blood sugar can cause changes to the collagen and other tissues in your skin, making it weaker and more prone to wrinkling Avoid foods with added sugar, such as soda, candy, and cookies, and steer clear of foods that break down quickly into sugar, including white bread, white rice, and pasta.

Do you pick at your acne?
It’s tempting to squeeze a pimple or chip away at the edge of a scab. But you have to learn self-control when it comes to your skin. If you pick off a scab or squeeze a pimple until it bleeds, you’re injuring the skin, which can lead to scarring. Leave scabs and pimples to heal on their own.

    Do you smoke?
Smoking ages your skin prematurely, just as spending a lot of time in the sun does. The habit can add 10 years or more to your appearance. The free radicals in cigarette smoke attack the collagen and elastic tissue in your skin, making your skin thinner, weaker, and more prone to wrinkling. Smoking also makes the wrinkles around your mouth and eyes start earlier and deepen sooner. There is only one solution, “Quit”. No matter how long you’ve been smoking, you’ll see benefits once you stop.

Do you see a dermatologist every year?
An annual exam for everyone, to look for moles, growths, or rashes that could signal a potential problem is very important. Checking your skin yourself is crucial, too, but a trained professional may notice a trouble spot that you might overlook or consider unimportant. In most cases, catching a problem early means it will be easier to fix.

  • The most potent Anti Agers in the market

    Green Tea
Green tea is an antioxidant, meaning that it aids in preventing and repairing the damage done by oxidation, which breaks down skin cells Green tea also has a wonderful effect on dark circles – which is especially striking when combined with caffeine in eye cream.

    B Vitamins
B vitamins can be especially potent in moisturizers. When these vitamins are among the ingredients in your skin care, any damaged cells will heal and regenerate more quickly. And if you’re looking to supplement your anti-aging cream, one of the best natural sources of vitamin B is bananas.

    Coenzyme Q10
Another strong antioxidant, coenzyme Q10 (which is actually vitamin Q) can help build the foundation needed for younger-looking skin. As we get older, our natural coenzyme Q10 levels diminish, slowing the skin’s ability to rejuvenate and protect itself from damage.

    Vitamin E
Vitamin E is a powerhouse when it comes to reversing the type of skin damage that leads to dryness, collagen destruction, and fine lines and wrinkles. The vitamin neutralizes free radicals – agents that damage cells – by environmental factors like sun exposure.

    Copper
Essential for collagen formation, the anti-aging ingredient helps support the skin to prevent sagging and to fill in wrinkles. It is a good alternative for those with sensitive skin who may not be able to tolerate retinoids.

    Peptides
When included in anti-aging treatments, peptides are believed to stimulate the production of collagen.

  • Water and the skin

Is water really essential for the appearance of your skin?

While not everyone agrees, we think the answer is a resounding yes! Skin is intricately tied to the overall health of your body. When your body is properly hydrated, you’ll look better and feel better. Water gives you a radiant complexion and in addition, bloating and puffiness often disappears.

    How much water is needed?

The amount of water needed by an individual varies, depending on body weight and level of daily physical activity. Also illness, pregnancy, and breastfeeding are special situations that demand greater fluid consumption. Drinking too much water may lead to a rare condition called Hyponatremia. Check with your physician for recommendations.

At Kosmoderma, we follow an easy formula to help you determine how much water is needed every day for maximum physical health:

    • Take your body weight in kilograms
    • Divide this number by 8
    • The resulting number approximates how much 8-ounce glasses of water you should drink every day.

For example, if your weight is 50kg, you should drink 6 glasses of water every day. If you are involved in intense physical activity, add 2 extra glasses of water to the final number.

Consuming lots of fresh fruits and vegetables for healthy skin will satisfy some of your body’s fluid requirement. Also milk, juice, and other healthy beverages are part of your daily total. Just make sure that most of your daily fluid is pure, clear water. So keep a large bottle of water on hand daily and keep the body hydrated.
