  • Excess Sweating: The solution once and for all

    Anti-perspirants

Commonly available in the market, the most effective of the anti-perspirants works by creating a sweat plug due to the presence of aluminium content in them. Antiperspirants are best used for excess sweating as a temporary solution because blocking perspiration regularly isn’t the right thing to do.

The over the counter products work for most but in case you still face excess perspiration issues, consult your dermatologist.

    Iontophoresis

This procedure involves dipping your hands and legs in medicated solution for longer durations to release the body toxins. Research is still on to understand how osmosis/reverse-osmosis in this case releases the toxins but the results have been seen in case of mild perspirational issues.

However, there are no theoretical experiments backing this procedure effectiveness. The defined effectiveness has been totally experience based.

    Botulinum Toxins

The most effective non-surgical procedure available. Botulinum toxins if injected in the right amount and at the right place help in almost curbing the issue for a really long duration. In some cases however, booster doses may be required.

The toxin works by paralysing the sweat glands so that excess sweat isn’t produced.

The catch however is that one has to take the injectible from a trained doctor only because any variation in quantity may be lethal and any wrong application may render the treatment totally ineffective.

    Surgical Procedures

Recommended only for extreme cases where the patient does not respond to Botulinum toxins too. In this procedure known as Endoscopic Thoracic Sympathectomy (ETS), the surgeon makes an incision on the nerve of the sweat glands. This procedure is very effective but almost all cases face the side effect of compensatory sweating where the body stops sweating at the designated place but to compensate for it, starts sweating at another location.

Other than these, the doctors may also prescribe anticholinergic drugs to stop the activation of sweat glands and help with reducing the excess sweating.

We hope that this blog will give you enough insights to choose the treatment that would suit you most.

  • Body Odour Prevention: The Gharelu Nuskhe

So, if you have been facing body odour issues off late, it is time you do something about it. Just sticking to the regular deodorants or perfumes may not be the solution to your concerns.

PS: There are proven medical treatments for body odour prevention and at Kosmoderma, we prefer opting for them only. But, we know that everyone wants to try out few harmless and natural DIYs before opting for a long last treatment and hence here are the top 3 treatments that we have still found effective over time.

    Rosemary Solution
Rosemary is a natural antibacterial agent which also contains menthol and zinc. The inherent antibacterial properties inhibit the bacterial growth while menthol helps in neutralising the body odour. The additional zinc content in it which when seeps into the skin may reduce the body odour in the first place as zinc deficiency has been known to cause body odour in several individuals.

Following are the ways in which Rosemary can be utilised for body odour treatment:

    • Add one and half cup of dried rosemary leaves to four cups of hot water. Leave the water-leaves mix stand still for 10-15 minutes. Soak up the leaves well and then use cotton to pat this solution onto your skin (special attention to the odour points). Alternatively, you can also mix this solution in your bathing water and soak up your body in this for 15 to 20 minutes. Once done, pat your skin dry.
    • Another way is to prepare a natural deodorant by mixing about 8 ml rosemary essential oil in 22 ml of water and using it as and when required.

    Sage Herb
The herb is known to reduce sweat gland activity and is an antibacterial agent which reduces bacterial growth and hence inhibits body odour. It can be used to effect in the following ways.

    • For internal systemic cleansing, soak one tbsp of dried sage in a cup of hot water for about 10 minutes. Strain the leaves and drink. This drink should not be taken more than twice daily
    • Mix about 2 ml each of sage essential oil, coriander essential oil, lavender essential oil and about 40 ml of distilled witch hazel. Mix them well and use the resultant solution as a deodorant daily.

Note: Pregnant ladies or Nursing mothers should not use sage

    Apple Cider Vinegar
In addition to being an antibacterial agent, apple cider vinegar helps in maintaining the natural body pH too. The usage can be done in the following ways:

    • Gently apply apple cider vinegar on your underarms for about 2-3 minutes and then wash it off with cold water. Repeat this process twice daily- once in morning and second before going to bed at night. Ideally, the improvement in your situation should be visible within 20-25 days.
    • Make a concoction of apple cider vinegar and honey in warm water. Drink this mix before your meals i.e. thrice a day. This will internally cleanse your system thus reducing the body odour issues.

    Hope these would help.

  • Say “No” to Dark Underarms….

    What’s the problem?
When it comes to your armpits, it is the melanin that causes the area to become darker either through external assault or internal aggression. What exactly are these aggressions? Before trying any of the underarm skin whitening remedies, treatments or creams, ensure you know the cause of dark under arms. Otherwise, you might be treating a wrong cause where you are likely to fail.

Here are some common causes that leave you with undesirable under arms.

Use of alcohol-based Deodorants and Antiperspirants
Antiperspirants are the most used products against excessive sweating. They work by seeping into pores and plugging sweat ducts. Aluminum compounds and other active antiperspirant ingredients are often dissolved in alcohol because it dries quickly and feels cool when applied. But it may also dry out the skin and cause antiperspirant irritation. Although rare, there could be a likelihood that some ingredients in deodorants and antiperspirants could cause dark skin under armpits. Try switching brands or using a deodorant instead of an antiperspirant.

    Excessive rubbing / Friction
If the flab on your underarms is constantly rubbing against something, it may result in hyper- keratosis, which is the thickening of the skin which actually provides protection against irritation. With hyper-keratosis comes hyperpigmentation, also known as “discoloration”. Unfortunately, there’s nothing you can do to prevent this due to the anatomy of your underarms. But you can minimize the friction. Avoid wearing rough clothing that can aggravate your underarm skin. Also, try to wear looser clothes that minimize this contact.

    Hormonal changes
Periodically, your body goes through hormonal changes, like when you get pregnant. This causes your body to increase the production of melanin, leading to blotchiness, uneven skin tone, and skin darkening on the upper lip, neck and yes, your underarms as well. Sometimes the discoloration goes away. But for some, it may stay on even after your pregnancy. See a dermatologist if the problem persists.

    Bacteria
If you do not clean your under arms properly, they will obviously appear black and dark. Dead skin will build up and microorganisms will thrive in the dark and sweaty conditions of your underarms. This may lead to a chronic infection in the deeper layers of your underarm skin, which then leads to the formation of rough, discolored skin that is red in the first place but slowly changes to become brown. So it’s important to wash your armpits regularly with an anti-bacterial soap. Preferably use a wash with tea tree. Tea tree oil has natural antiseptic properties and is very effective in killing bacteria.

A medical condition called acanthosis nigricans.
Dark underarms may also be as a result of a medical condition that is known as acanthosis nigricans, which is often associated with insulin resistance, obesity, hormonal disorders, certain medications, and cancer. Areas affected feel velvety and are a dark gray or brown color. Consult a doctor for proper diagnosis and treatment. There are many treatments available at skin clinics like laser and peels that could lighten the pigmentation.

    Shaving / Waxing
Know how your guy’s stubble looks dark and rough by the evening? Well, the same is happening to your underarm skin if shaving is your preferred method for hair removal. Underarm hair that has been shaved tends to be darker and coarser. Underarm waxing has its own drawbacks. It doesn’t truly get rid of underarm hair, but only reduces it. This means the hair will grow back and as it grows back, you will have to undergo another round of waxing, which can be uncomfortable at times and never ending! Instead of shaving or waxing, consider laser hair removal. These procedures remove hair below the skin’s surface and reduce the visibility of the hair.

    Try Laser Hair Removal
As the saying goes, prevention is always better than cure, the best way to prevent dark under arms would be Laser Hair Removal as it’s a hair reduction*. Not only can laser hair removal of the armpits erase hair growth, but it also wipes away follicles and stubble that make your underarm dark-coloured and unsightly. So you need not worry about that unwanted stubble and can spread your arms lovingly, anytime!

    Home remedies
You may try exfoliating your underarm with lemon & sugar scrub or soda bicarbonate with water. You may also try applying potato or cucumber juice for your dark underarms. But if these remedies do not show results, please consult a dermatologist.

  • Does profuse sweating affect your confidence at work and in relationships?

You are not alone. Approximately 20 – 30% of the population have problems with body odour and excessive sweating. Sometimes heavy sweating is a sign of a medical condition. It’s not always easy for the average person to know the difference, so it is important to seek medical help.

People with excessive sweating wish they could just turn the tap off. It might not be as easy as that, but there are effective treatments available. At Kosmoderma, a solution* is now available with the ‘KosmoSweat Free Treatment’. One session can give you relief of up to 90% for as long as 6 – 8 months. This treatment program has been conceptualised by our team of expert dermatologists especially for Indian environments to give relief from body odour and excessive sweating.

Here are some self-help tips that I always suggest my patients to follow:

    • Avoid known triggers that make your sweating worse, such as hot & spicy foods or alcohol.
    • Use antiperspirant spray (rather than deodorants).
    • Avoid tight, restrictive clothing and man-made fibers, such as nylon. Preferably use cotton.
    • Wearing white or black clothing can minimize the signs of sweating.
    • Wear socks that absorb moisture, for example thick, soft socks made of natural fibers or sportsocks designed to absorb moisture. Avoid synthetics, and change your socks at least twice a day.
    • Buy shoes that are made of leather, canvas or mesh rather than synthetic material.
